Terrifying that having sex can give you cancer--indirectly. Those commercials for the vaccine are positively gripping and haunting.

I think it's a good lesson though in safe sex.
HPV vaccine or not, you should not be having unprotected sex. What about HIV? Herpes?
All the other STD's.
I hope this vaccine doesn't give a false sense of security to people.

I agree...my mom wasn't the type of mom that talked sex with me. And I was pretty responsible, but I probably could've benefited from a relationship that was more open to discussing the possible dangers. I hope to have that relationship with my DC.

The problem with HPV is condoms do not protect you. This is spread by skin on skin contact. In fact 85% of all sexually active people have has a strain at one point.

I'm sorry if I sound like a complete dumbass...but doesn't a condom protect you from direct skin on skin (genital) contact? Or are you saying it can be passed from absolutely any skin to skin contact?

I'm confused by this too.
So it can be transmitted by a hug?

ETA- just saw this:

It is important to use a condom from start to finish of every sex act, including oral and anal sex. HPV is transmitted by skin-to-skin contact. Because HPV can infect areas that are not covered by the condom, condoms will not fully protect you against contracting HPV, but condoms do help in HPV prevention.

LOL no not a hug. Genital skin to Genital skin.

The images in my head right now.... Chat Icon

I think they mean BEFORE you are in a monogamous relationship like a marriage.
Though these sites and recommendations are a bit hard line I find.
I remember there was some CDC site that said that women of child bearing age who are sexually active should never drink alcohol EVER because they can be pregnant and not know it yet.
Really??

I think HPV is moot once you're married. You'll just pass it pass it back and forth till it dies.

There are many other (better) options IMO to avoid pregnancy. I was religious about using condoms back when DH and I were in high school but nowadays, I can't stand using them. Too cold and impersonal. JMO. Chat Icon

I don't like them (or use them) either but for someone who can't use hormonal birth control there aren't a ton of other options.

Lots of married couples use them usually because they don't have a choice. Don't use them if you don't want to not sure why you think its so odd.

HPV can stay dormant in your system for 5 years. If it becomes active in your system, your more likely to pass it to your SO. HPV can then stay dormant in their system for years. Theoretically, any couple (married or not) could be passing it back and forth to each other again and again. If you have an abnormal pap, the doctor will normally recommend using a condom with your SO (even if your married) to try to break the cycle of it going back and forth.

Hell no.

It is not a "cancer vaccine". It *might* prevent against "some strains" of HPV that *might* lead to cancer.
Too many "maybes" (my pediatrician agreed with this as well.... that not all strains cause cancer and they don't really know which ones do).

Also, it's too new. Not enough long term research has been done.

I am pro vaccines but will NOT get my children this vaccine.

Married here, and used condoms for a couple years after my second. Can't take hormonal BC and didn't want to get pregnant.

I don't think it's weird at all. If anything, it's responsible because you're being proactive about avoiding an unwanted pregnancy

I say this as a married person..................who in the hell would use a condom for ANY sex act when you're married??!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Someone who doesn't want to get pregnant?

I think HPV is moot once you're married. You'll just pass it pass it back and forth till it dies.

There are many other (better) options IMO to avoid pregnancy. I was religious about using condoms back when DH and I were in high school but nowadays, I can't stand using them. Too cold and impersonal. JMO. Chat Icon

Lots of married couples use them usually because they don't have a choice. Don't use them if you don't want to not sure why you think its so odd.

Yea strange comment...pretty much all my married friends use condoms...lol. I personally cannot take any kind of birth control. I've tried many and never feel right on them and I dont want to get pregnant right now soooo....

Married here, and used condoms for a couple years after my second. Can't take hormonal BC and didn't want to get pregnant.

I don't think it's weird at all. If anything, it's responsible because you're being proactive about avoiding an unwanted pregnancy

Let me rephrase.................who in the hell would use a condom for oral sex??!! I'd rather not bother. Chat Icon

I understand the need for them to avoid pregnancy, just not my choice method. I actually didn't want to go back to using hormonal BC after many years of fertility treatments so for the last 4 years I have been tracking my cycles with the CBEFM. We're 42 and done having kids so DH will be getting snipped soon because I don't want to have to think about BC in any capacity anymore.Chat Icon

Really torn on the HPV vaccine

Just an aside...and I am TRULY not trying to start a debate. I am SHOCKED at the amount of people that don't get a flu shot.

I haven't had the flu since before I got my tonsils out when I was 5, so I don't bother with the flu shot for myself. However, my kids get theirs every year.

Same. Never had a shot, never had the flu.
DD gets the shot ever year and got the flu last year.
I take a lot of supplements to boost my immune system and since starting on them I can't recall the last time I even had so much as a head cold. Way more effective than the "guess which strain it MIGHT be this year' shot.

I'm another who has never had a flu shot and will never get one. I'm amazed at the amount of people that do get it! I have some risk factors also, but my doctor supports my decision.

My dad had serious, serious complications from the flu one year. He was in his late 40's at the time, no major health issues. Needless to say it was enough to scare all of us into getting it every year.

If only the shot worked. Half the time I hear of people getting the shot and getting the flu anyway.
They always seem to guess what strains are going to be prevalent that year wrong.
Terrible track record.
And the answer is always- well it's a guess.
Wonderful
I feel like it's a crap shot or pure luck on whether or not you get the flu. Shot or not.
