Advice/Opinion Regarding an Assault That Took Place
If you were assaulted by someone you didn't know and were told by police it would be a harassment charge/a minor felony if charged, but the person would eventually find out your name, would you continue to press charges or not in fear of retaliation should the person find out who you are?

I am really sorry you are going through with this. I am not sure. If I had long lasting injuries, yes I think I would press charges, but if not, I am not sure. I also think I would be afraid of retaliation by the aggressor or others in their community. If someone was insane, and I had no normal integration or continued reasons for integration I would probably thank my lucky stars and walk away. However, if they were in my community, maybe I would feel differently.

I'm sorry for whatever happened to you.
Wouldn't the person know who was pressing charges anyway? I mean unless they're going around doing whatever it is to people all the time, then i'd have to assume they would know it was you when faced with the charges.
I guess it depends on the severity of what happened, but more than likely, yes, i would press charges. I couldn't live with myself if this person continued to do whatever it was, or did it worse to someone else.

I think you should file a report so Its documented but not press charges if you're afraid. Or let some time pass and go smash their windows.

I think every situation is unique. You mean by assault that they threatened you, but didn't do anything? If I thought I was in future danger, I would report it. Not sure what that means - if they would get charged with something or not. If I wasn't in danger and they didn't know who I was or where I lived or worked, then no, I wouldn't want them to get my name.

Advice/Opinion Regarding an Assault That Took Place
Thanks ladies. I'll share my story. On Friday morning at 4:30 AM I was leaving for work, I teach in Queens. I stopped in a local 711 by my house in Suffolk County to get coffee, but mind you I have not once stopped there all year. As I walked out with my coffee a car pulled up in front and as he stepped onto the curb he lunged at me and grabbed me and put me in what was like a headlock. With all my strength I had in me I pushed away and screamed "get off of me". As this was going on another man pulled up in his car and he definitely looked like something was wrong but it was at time I had just pulled away from him so he waited for a second and I ran fast to my car as the man who did this continued to walk into 711. Stupidly, I didn't call the police even though I was hysterical because all I kept thinking was I had to get to work as I was having my last observation of the year. I barely made it through my day and when I got home my husband and I filed a police report.
I had my wallet in my hand so he definitely wasn't trying to steal from me. I believe this other guy who pulled up around the exact time it was happening may have been my unspoken hero and prevented me from getting hurt or pulled into his car or who knows what else.
I'm so afraid if I go through with pressing charges he may come after my family and I so at this point that is making me at the moment not go further. It was the absolute scariest moment of my life

It's sad but I don't think I would press charges. Do they know who he is? I would be terrified because it's so easy to find out so much information online these days. I would fear for the safety of myself, my husband and my children.
So sorry that you went thru that. It sounds awful and THANK GOD that person pulled up when they did.

Not yet, would only start investigating and subpoena the tapes from 711 IF I said I'm willing to go ahead with it.

I think you should talk to the police about when the perp would find out your name etc. Really it's the district attorney's office who makes the decision whether or not to charge someone with a criminal offense. The thing I would worry about is that if I didn't press charges, would I see this guy on the news after he hurt someone and then feel guilty that I didn't go forward.

OMG, how terrifying!! I'm so sorry that happened to you. I can definitely understand your fear about pressing charges. It's such a hard decision. I would talk to the police again and ask their opinion.

Did they mention a video of the attack from 7-11? Awful. Sorry about this. Very scary. Unless he has an extensive arrest history he would get off light and your name would be disclosed.... did the police locate who did this? Because I am thinking if there is no video and , he is a stranger the chances of him being found and arrested are slim....

It's easy for anyone to say that they'd be brave, but in reality, who knows what we would do. Kudos to you for fighting back, but I am so sorry you went through this. Maybe get some legal advice?

My fear would be ... wtf was he trying to do? Steal? Kidnap you? I would make a police report so that maybe at least they could pull the tapes from 7-11.

I'm so sorry this happened to you! I would imagine that once you filed the report the police have to follow through with an investigation. Did they find out who the person is? If he is arrested you would be contacted by the district attorney and would have the option to cooperate or not.
Did you call or let that 7-11 know what happened? Perhaps they have had complaints before?

Maybe he is a regular patron of that 7-11? I would go in (with your dh, or have him go) and speak to the owner, explain what happened, and see if he will pull the tape without going through the police. I know of people who had hit and run accidents and appealed to the company it happened in front of, and they were happy to help.
Not sure what you would do from there exactly. But maybe seeing it might give you some clarity (like it was not as bad or worse than you though). Maybe you can determine his motive.
Can't hurt to ask.
My other thought if you do press charges is to immediately get an order of protection from him.
