Vehicle strikes pedestrians in Times Square
A car ran through a crowd of pedestrians. Apparently 1 person was killed and at least 13 injured
Times Square incident
A speeding vehicle drove into Times Square on Thursday, striking multiple pedestrians on a sidewalk, according to officials and multiple reports.
The FDNY said 13 people were injured. It was still unclear whether the incident was due to a medical emergency or intentional, a NYPD police official said.
Video from the scene shows a maroon sedan at rest with two of its wheels in the air, on top of short steel poles. The vehicle’s hood is flipped up, and it has severe front end damage, the videos show.
Mayor Bill de Blasio was headed to the scene as of 12:30 p.m., according to a tweet from his office. And White House press secretary Sean Spicer tweeted at 12:30 p.m. that President Donald Trump “has been made aware of the situation in Times Square and will continue to receive updates.”

Vehicle strikes pedestrians in Times Square
Ugh I'm watching this, and they are saying it appears to be intentional. So sad

Vehicle strikes pedestrians in Times Square
Just heard the driver has a history of drink driving so maybe reckless but not intentional. Time will tell but I hope all those injured make it through okay.

I just spoke to one of my coworkers who's right there. He said he heard the guy was driving the wrong way on Broadway from about 39th St. until he hit those people. What a shame.

Re: Vehicle strikes pedestrians in Times Square
Richard Rojas, the 26-year-old driver in custody for slamming into Times Square and killing one pedestrian ... had an absolutely insane look on his face seconds after the crash.
We obtained these pics taken just as Rojas had jumped out of his Honda sedan. He seems to be attempting to run away from the death and destruction behind him. You can also see the horror on the faces of his victims ... some of them clinging to young children.
Rojas didn't get far. NYPD officers, as well as civilians, immediately chased him down and nabbed him.
Law enforcement sources tell us Rojas admitted smoking marijuana Thursday morning before he got behind the wheel. We're told he has previous arrests for DWI.

I think he was on something much more than pot to be honest. He seems like he was in a drug fueled rage of some kind

Re: Vehicle strikes pedestrians in Times Square
Sounds more like a drunk driver from what they said about his record and actions at the scene.
They said he drove 3-1/2 blocks on the sidewalk! Terrible one person lost their life but it's a miracle not more were killed.
for everyone involved.

definitely more than pot even if he wasn't there is no way pot would make him not know what he was doing unless it was laced with another drug!

Based on him having prior DWIs, he was probably drunk as well.

Re: Vehicle strikes pedestrians in Times Square
This is why all buzzed and drunk drivers need to do hard time and lose their licenses whether or not they hit anyone. At a certain point, it';s just luck.
It tends to be the same people over and over again.
And we're all at their mercy.
Praying for the victims.

Oh most likely drunk too. The way he was acting though, so full of rage. They were saying when he got out of the car he was attacking people on the street too. That was what made me think of some kind of heavy drugs. He was acting psychotic.

Sadly even if you take away their licenses- they still drive. Such a scary place this world.

Re: Vehicle strikes pedestrians in Times Square
Those are the other pieces of it. We can never protect ourselves and our children 100%, BUT we can:
1. Crack down hard and consistently on unlicensed drivers--gets accident rates and some traffic down too.
2. Put drunk drivers away and make them do hard time. Get them off the street and send out a chilling message to anyone who's thinking of doing it.
I never understood why this wasn't done more/ Fine 'em, impound the cars, make back the revenue spent on enforcement....

Re: Vehicle strikes pedestrians in Times Square
Times Square maniac was allegedly attempting suicide-by-cop He was out for blood — and looking for a suicide-by-cop.
The Bronx man who plowed his car into a Times Square crowd, killing a teen tourist and injuring 22 others, wanted to commit murder, and then wanted cops to kill him, police sources said.
“You were supposed to shoot me! I wanted to kill them,” Richard Rojas, 26, told police, according to sources.
The killer, who’s been arrested twice for DWI, wasn’t drunk when he went on the rampage in the heart of the Big Apple, a high-ranking police official said. Rojas is currently being tested for drugs, as he appeared to be high, according to sources.
He served in the US Navy from 2011 to 2015, and was not honorably discharged, sources said. A friend said Rojas was never the same after he returned from his military service, and took up drinking to cope with the stress.
“He finally came home, and it was hard for him to find a job,” said Harrison Ramos, 30. “He was having a lot of bad nightmares. He was talking crazy. He was acting strange.”
Ramos added he would buy alcohol “to forget about all that stuff.”
“He should’ve gotten professional help,” he said. “He would talk about demons and devils and conspiracy theories.”
But on Wednesday night, Rojas appeared to be in “good spirits” as he partied with friends and celebrated getting his car back, a pal said.
“He just got his car back, a Honda,” said Jose Medrano, 27. “He was happy about it. He said they had taken his car for lack of payment. He just gotten it back and was happy.”
“He was drinking last night out here, with his friends,” Medrano added. “He looked in good spirits.”
The next day, Rojas used the Honda to mow down nearly two dozen people on the sidewalk, police said.

It's disturbing how many military personnel come back with all these mental problems. Wasn't the Florida airport shooter also ex military with mental issues? We really need to do better with mental health services for veterans

Yes, I believe he was.
I agree a lot more needs to be done to help these service men and women. And I don't ever hear politicians talking about this and working on better options. I'm sure there is help out there but it doesn't seem to be enough.

He was possibly high on K2. I've dealt with many people on this drug and it's a violent one. Turns people really really psychotic it's unreal.

This is just awful and mental health needs to be taken more seriously. Not just veterans in general our mental health services are disgraceful.
