Disney emh...yay or nay?

We'll be with our 2 and 4 year old so the 9-11pm ones would be out of the question, but what about the 8-9am ones?

Go and take advantage of staying onsite?

Or avoid at all costs bc of the extra crowds and who knows if we'll be able to get up and out that early anyway?

It's so hard to pick the right park on the right day and then plan dining and fast passes around that.

Depends...which resort are you at? Bus lines are mobbed for EMH mornings....so between that, then stopping at a million internal bus stops (depending on resort obviously), I feel like you have to get up at the butt crack of dawn. I would just hit another park to be honest.

it depends.... but we tend to avoid the parks with EMH that day. a lot of times those tend to be more crowded on the emh days. that said though, we go a lot so we're not super worried about fitting a ton of stuff in.
What we like to do instead is, on a non emh day, try to get an early breakfast reservation at a restaurant in the park. then we can get in a little earlier than the rest of the crowds, eat breakfast, and get in line for the rides just ahead of the crowds.
so say magic kingdom is opening at 9 one morning... we book a breakfast at be our guest for like 8:15 AM. then we get in early, eat, and we can beat the crowds to the lines for 7 dwarves mine train, peter pan, etc.

Since you can walk I would do it.

The conventional wisdom with morning EMH is that you do it only if you really think you can get there early enough to actually use the EMH.

As silly as that might sound, there are a lot of people who plan for it but then they don't move fast enough in the morning so they end up getting there more like regular opening time.

So that park might be more crowded at say 10:30 but at 8:30 it'll be lovely.

If you have park hoppers and are up, then go for it since you can walk there. Then hop to another park midday. Keep in mind that main street is now open an hour before the scheduled park opening. So there will be those crowds on main street also. But my understanding is your magic band is required to go beyond certain points until official park opening, so they wouldn't be on the rides yet

See it's such a wild card with the kids lol. Maybe I'll attempt it one of the days, but only for MK.

We do have park hoppers.

This is correct - you still can't wander about beyond say, Crystal Palace (at the end of Main Street.)

We are very different Disney vacationers than most on this board. As adults, hubby and I would use the EMH.

Now, I feel strongly that the benefits of staying off site FAR outweigh the benefits of onsite.

We typically take it easy with kids. We sleep in a bit, wake up, have a big breakfast at the hotel (we chose places that include really great breakfast) and go to the park at 10:00ish. We get an early dinner in the park and stay until late (this is with 3 young ones... who last were 6,4 & 1). We do things slowly, don't rush, fast pass away and have a great time. I wouldn't get up so early with my kids.

My sister, on the other hand had kids that wake no matter what at 5am. For her, it's worth it. Since her kids nap for 3 hours!!!! She's staying onsite. My 1 year old only naps 20 minutes a day.

We lean in this direction too - but we didn't always.

My son used to be an early riser when he was very little. So initially it made more sense for us to get an early start, then head back to the hotel for a break/nap, then return to the parks at night. Sometimes we'd stay late, sometimes not - depending on how much rest we got during the break.

Now that he's older he sleeps later - we're all night owls - plus he doesn't nap anymore. Also, he is tall enough for and aware of the headliners. So we can't get away with the "just do what we can and when we're done leave" approach anymore. But it's more fun because he's enjoying more of the park - I want him to be able to ride everything he wants to ride. And he totally got the concept of how when it gets later the lines get shorter because people start to leave. It was so much fun, and FP+ makes it possible, because you no longer have to get there at the crack of dawn to pull the good FPs.

Anyway, we're now fans of the offsite time share rental, but back in the day I loved my onsite experiences.

ETA - Sorry NewDay for the hijack!

No worries. It's still all informative. My version of Disney right now is diff with a 2 and 4 year old both of which are early risers.

Im sure when they're 6 and 8, etc it will be a totally diff experience

Re: Disney emh...yay or nay?

My kids were very early risers at ages 2 and 4 so we always took advantage of the early magic hour. They are now almost 6 and 8 and still up by 7. We have never needed use an alarm because they wake me up every morning.

When the time comes when kids start waking up late, I may reevaluate but we still think the perks of staying on site still outweigh the perks of staying off site.

I love the nighttime EMH and since we usually go at low crowd times, the nighttime EMH are totally worth it. The park is pretty empty at that point and the rides are practically walk on. I don't bother with morning EMH because I am not a morning person and wouldn't never manage to get there earlier enough to take advantage.

We used to do extra morning hours, don't anymore. I don't like how only part of the park is open (magic kingdom). Now we schedule breakfasts pretty much everyday and for us it's a much better start to the day, and more leisurely.
