Re: Stressing! How to afford summer camp/care

Does your 12yo need to attend camp? Could she be a CIT like others have suggested?

Maybe she could find a mother's helper type job?

My parents did not send me to expensive camps and I somehow survived. If I remember correctly, I took a few summer enrichment classes and just hung out reading books all summer.

eta: i just remembered my parents put me in some psat prep class that summer.

Can you do half day and use a babysitter for the other half? Or do 2-3 days of camp and the others with a sitter?

This is what I do.

12 years old is not old enough to be a CIT.

I didn't go to an expensive camp as a kid either, but my Mother didn't work summers, so she didn't need camp/child care.

I'm not comfortable leaving her home by herself for 8 hours a day for 10 weeks. We live in an area where the houses are very spread out, with no young kids in my neighborhood.

I am out of the house before 8 am and don't return until at least 5. I work an hour and a half away. My DH can leave as early as 5 am, and can return after 7 pm, his job spans 3 states.

Both children have anaphylactic food allergies. I'm not comfortable leaving them alone. As far as a sitter, I would prefer them in a program outside of our home. I want them active, with other children and outside.

There are some town programs.
One may be a possibility, but when you add in before and after care, it almost negates the discount of using a town camp.

We did use a YMCA camp many years ago. I wasn't thrilled with the program, and again, if you add before and after care, the price goes up exponentially.

In private camps, once a child is a "tween", the price goes up from 1-3k per summer (depending on the camp).

We don't have Pal or Boys/girls Club here.

If all else fails, I can bring them to my parent's, but with traffic, it can be 1-1 1/2 hour commute each way.

So, basically, Long Island, especially North Shore, Western Suffolk, could really use an affordable camp for working parents.

Anyone up for the task of opening one?!

I don't have any suggestions but want to commiserate. We're paying $7k for camp this summer for 4 and 2 yos and the 2 yo is only going 3 days a week for 2 1/2 hours!! At some point, we will have three in camp full time and it will be tens of thousands of dollars! It's insane. While it's our choice, we both work full time with long hours and I want them to have fun in a safe environment. This will already be my older one's third summer and she absolutely loves it.
