What do you say when - interview question
When you're on a job interview and someone asks what your weakness is?

Been ages since I've interviewed - - but I interview applicants on a fairly regular basis. I don't routinely ask this question because I rarely find the responses to be helpful - - but I have to say, I really hate it when people try to turn it around to be a good thing, like: "Well, I'm such an over-achiever that I set unrealistically high goals for myself". Please, spare me the ego stroking!
I had someone fairly recently respond with what I interpreted as real truth and "outed" that she didn't have significant experience in one of the less important aspects of the stated job description. I actually found it reassuring that she was confident enough in her skills and potential to be honest about a real shortcoming.

On the other hand we can say "spare me the dumb question please". I don't know how any interviewer can ask such a question and not get some ego stroking back? Do you think the applicant is going to say they smoke a lot of pot and oversleep often?

This is how I always answer, "I'm a perfectionist". Which is true. I get really hard on myself if it's not done right. I'm more about quality than quantity, which depending on the job/boss, is a fault.

I've always said that my weakness is interviews. This way if my interview went great,my potential employer can expect even better from me performance wise.. If it sucked, then they would know it is because well.... I suck at interviews!
It has always worked for me.

Well if someone told us please spare us the dumb question, I can assure you, they definitely will not be getting hired!

I agree with Ave - there's no good answer that will come from it and it will color the interviewer's perception.

My greatest weakness is probably my left shoulder. I had surgery a few years ago, and it's still not as strong as it used to be.....

I usually talk about a weakness I've had that I overcame.. for example, managing or public speaking... & explain how I overcame it.

Agree with Ave, so lame. The last interview I had, the guy said I'm going to ask you this question that I hate to ask. I told him to ask me something else  we laughed about it , but seriously stop asking this silly question.
