Re: Help me settle a debate with DH.......
Yes, I feel like "clean" has a smell, but I can't define it, nor do I necessarily think that pure cleanliness SHOULD have a smell.
Sorry for being useless

Charlie's Soap isn't real detergent, so in essence, if he is smelling any other kind of odor or "not clean" type of smell it's because the soap is building up in the fibers of the clothes and are not getting clean, like soap scum. The clothes should be stripped and you need a detergent with a real surfectant.
As an aside - yes, I do like my clothes to have a clean fragrance to them.
What do you mean by a real surfactant? I don't use this brand (never heard of it until this post) but I was just looking into trying it.
Pretty much all of the "natural" or "organic" or "homemade" laundry soaps are just combinations of softeners, boosters or soaps. They don't contain any chemical cleaning agents which is what actually cleans the dirt and grime out of clothes. If you strip your clothes after using natural laundry soaps you will be shocked at how the water looks afterwards.
Check these links:
Why we don't recommend homemade laundry detergent
Before and after photos
Gross. I'll stick with Tide.

There's no odor at all. The clothes don't smell dirty or anything. They are literally without fragrance. The links you posted are interesting. I feel like my clothes are so much cleaner since using Charlies Soap and it gets out stains that other detergents didn't. Just out of curiosity, what clothing detergent do you use? You seem to know a lot about this topic and I wanna learn!

A friend was trying to shame me for using dreft because the EWG (motto: don't breathe, air is toxic) gave it an F and I told her the same thing- the natural stuff doesn't work.
OP, I get what both of you are saying. I'd get him different detergent and make him do his own laundry!

I hate clean smells. They're chemicals and fake and not great to breathe in. I use a detergent that smells like nothing yet my clothes still smell nice. They smell fresh and not dirty.
Same for me. Can't stand artificial scents.
agree 100%, clean does not need to smell.
I agree too. We arm and hammer sensitive skin, zero smells, gets it clean.
My new boss clearly loves Tide and uses a ton of it because when I'm in his office it reeks of it and it starts to make me feel a little sick after awhile!

There is a cult-like FB group called Laundry Love & Science - outrageous what these people get clean, how they get it clean, stripping, etc. That's where I get my info from LOL these people are no joke when it comes to cleaning.
Basically, soap and detergent are meant to clean dirt and bacteria, but only detergent is intended for porous fibers like fabric and suspends the dirt in water so it can be washed away. If you use any type of fabric "wash" or "soda" or "soap" it just doesn't have the capability to remove dirt and bacteria in any meaningful way. Basically you are not getting the fibers clean and the clothing is sitting in dirty water and getting washed in dirty water. Clothes may seem clean, but if you do a strip (put clothes in a hot tub of water with equal parts of washing soda, Calgon water softener and Borax; agitate every hour; you will see the grime, soap scum and minerals release, then wash on a hot cycle and dry as normal) you will absolutely see the difference. The best way to tell if your clothes are not cleaning properly is to see how well your towels are absorbing; if they absorb properly and don't smell sour when wet you're good, if not, they need to be stripped because they have build up in the fibers.
I personally use Gain, with either Biz, Borax or OxyClean added as needed for stain removal, brightening or cleaning. We sanitize whites with bleach as well. We had used Persil for a while and I LOVED it, my clothes looked and smelled amazing, but (and this was common in the FB group I mentioned) after a while, my husband said his clothes smelled like vomit. I never had that issue with my clothes, and we could only guess that Persil was such a strong detergent that it was pulling out all the deeply embedded grime, body sweat, dirt and bacteria that was trapped in the fibers and had never really gotten clean before.
ALSO I read that Charlie's soap has a very high sodium metalisicate level which is what is used to turn fat into soap. Without a proper buffer it can cause chemical burns and raises the pH to dangerous levels if not rinsed thoroughly. The group has a disclaimer that "in no way can we ever in good conscious suggest or advertise for a company who makes products, that when used as directed, put their customers at risk."
I would definitely reconsider the Charlie's soap - and any type of homemade or "chemical free" (which doesn't exist anyway) type of washing agent. There are better and less toxic products to try.

Thanks so much for the info. Looks like I'll definitely be switching. I'm grossed out. Just curious -- does this Laundry Love group have any stance on powder vs. liquid detergents and what cleans better? Also, regarding stripping, is it not recommended to just wash clothes/towels with the new detergent? No way I can put my clothes in hot water -- we always wash them in cold to prevent shrinking. Only towels/sheets get washed in hot.

I am guilty of wanting things to smell clean. I know it doesn't have to smell that way but I like the clean smell. I like when my bathroom smells like bleach and when my kitchen smells like lemon.
Same here.
Me too. Clean definitely has a smell to me

Re: Help me settle a debate with DH.......
Thanks for the links Kitten1929. Very Interesting.
Unscented laundry detergent still has a scent-just not a perfume. I'm currently use Seventh Generation & it smells similar to stain removers like Zout. I don't know what gives it that scent, but it is common in most enzyme-based products.
That scent is what clean laundry smells like to me.
For other cleaning, I only like it to smell like lemon. Real lemon, not "lemon scented."

Re: Help me settle a debate with DH.......
LOVE Charlies Soap been using over 10 years. Our clothes look great (no fading pilling) and last forever!
There are no optical brighteners that most detergents have. Optical brighteners leave a "residue -film"on clothing to appear brighter - whiter.
Charlies does have surfactants , just natural ones (Vegetable and mineral sourced surfactants)
I do not equate clean to a smell - scent.. I can't stand the smell of tide or when someones clothing etc smells perfume like

No, they don't have an official stance, powder or liquid is generally personal preference. Some people use Foca powder which I hear is really good and dirt cheap. You could do a hot wash using the strip ingredients and just leave out your good clothes. I would just strip my husbands work clothes and towels and sheets. I never used a homemade detergent so I wasn't too worried about build up. You could try the Persil I mentioned for a good deep cleaning detergent and still wash on cold (that's what I did).
