Also, my train today had to be taken out of service because it was literally falling apart as it chugged along. I kid you not, parts of the train were dismantling. They had to evacuate cars because "something might be burning." Something MIGHT be BURNING.

This is what kills me. They can't control jumpers, assholes who go around gates and drive on the tracks, etc
But for what they charge to ride those rickety old crates, you would think the infrastructure and the trains themselves would be better
The trains are falling apart, and filthy.
The tracks are a mess- hence the constant derailments.
I pay $36.50 peak round trip to get into the city and back.
That's a lot for such an outdated, dilapidated system.
I just feel like there is a lot of corruption.

I think a lot of what people pay in taxes, fairs, bills, etc... go towards people salaries. And very little towards the actual services.

Yes - the infrastructure is terrible and so outdated.

The subways are worse. They are better than they were a few decades ago but they're still filthy and poorly maintained, and many stations still don't even have electronic signs showing arrival times.

You can see the difference when you travel to other countries and even other large US cities. The DC Metro is sleek, clean, don't smell like piss, and has train times posted in all stations.

It's an embarrassment.

Re: Please tell me this is not the norm!!!!

To address the OP I just want to say this week really was NOT the norm. It was a bit extreme.

I am on the main line and 95-97% of the time I have no issues. The earlier you travel the better, I think. I had no issues yesterday but I had to get in very early to proctor Regents so I might have missed it all.

I also don't work most of the summer so maybe the real percentage is a bit lower.

So this morning I had a lovely 45 minute commute into Jamaica and finally finished the book that I have been reading on and off for months. Hoping to take the 4:40 train home and start my weekend early. There better not be any delays!!!

Happy Friday :)

The subways are worse, but it's $2.50 per ride. Not $20+ one way. And the city dwellers aren't paying $10k+ in taxes.

The $$ is absolutely going to the salaries. I'm not saying MTA workers shouldn't be paid fairly, of course they should. But improvements NEED to be made.

I always wonder, how and why the subway systems in other countries seem so much more advanced yet we pay an obscene amount of money to travel to and from the city. Where the *%*%* is it going ???
