Mac or PC?

Our home computer is a Mac, but it died recently (we've had it since 2009). We need to replace it soon b/c I'm starting an online Master's degree in 2 weeks.

We can't decide if we want to get another Mac or get a PC.

PC - pros - we're more comfortable with how directories are laid out (where files are kept), it'll work better for my classes (yes, I know we can buy Microsoft Office for a Mac but it's still annoying), and they tend to be cheaper.

PC - cons - so.... many..... viruses! And we're not tech people so we would need to beef up the security or pay someone to de-bug it when/if it becomes infected

Mac - pros - no/minimal viruses (which is a big plus) and *all* our files (mainly photos, videos, and music) are stored there so I'm not sure if they'll transfer to a PC)

Mac - cons - more expensive and not as easy to use with my online classes

We use the computer in a typical way - photo storage, surfing the web, music production, and soon, an online class (which is web based but also requires Office).

Which is your preference?

Re: Mac or PC?

I'm heavily biased because I work on PCs for a living (and have for over 25 years), so I know them inside and out (literally).

However, to keep things more objective, I'll just ask some follow-up questions that can help you (and others) with your choice.

Do you have other Apple products? Iphone, Ipad, etc?

Do you use Apple or PC in other locations? Work, other computers at home, etc.

Photos will easily transfer between any type of computer, so that's not a deciding factor.

Other than Office, are there other tools that you want/need/like to use? I have so many tools that I use for various things, there's no way I could switch to Apple.

In general, for typical usage like you mentioned, there isn't a huge difference in PC vs Mac for surfing, photo storage, word processing, etc.

Are your other devices cross-compatible? External hard drives, monitors, printers, etc. They typically are, but there may not be drivers available for one format or the other.

I have a PC at home and have used a Mac at work. I like the Mac better security wise. I get CONSTANT virus threats on the PC and have never had one on my work computer. But I "know" the PC better.

For the money, I think the Mac is a better investment.

Most of our other products are Mac - iphone, ipad, iPod Touch (I also have a Nook but that's just for surfing the web and watching videos).

At work we use a PC. I've always used PCs at work, and I'm just more comfortable with how the file structure is laid out.

Another thing I forgot to mention is that on the Mac at home, I have issues working from home (I do a lot in Access and Excel), but they never want us to work from home so that hasn't been an issue (just for me personally, when I have a week vacation and I want to check in occasionally).

The only software we use is the stuff for my husband's music production, but most of it is from 2009 so he'd have to buy new stuff soon anyway. We have "time machine" which is the external backup and our scanner and printer work with both Mac and PC (although to be honest we always have trouble with the scanner working with Mac - no matter what brand we use).

Honestly, I'm leaning toward a PC, but I'm just so nervous about viruses since we're not technicians. What would your recommendation be to protect it? I know there are good freeware software available, but I'm willing to pay some if it meant we never got a virus.

Mac especially if you are not tech savvy it is nice to be able to walk into the Apple Store and get help if you need it.

Mac

You're on a Mac now - just the ease of the transfer is good enough reason

Re: Mac or PC?

I have an iphone, ipad, desktop MAC and a PC laptop. I can NOT for the life of me get used to the MAC.. to the point I haven't used it in 2+ years bc I always prefer to use the laptop. I'm just so used to all the shortcuts on windows.

Mac has great shortcuts. They are just different commands

I guess it's what you're used to

Same with me. Also hate excel and word on it. It looks different. My husband curses our Mac when he brings work home bc he uses Excel and it takes a long time to figure where everything is. He usually pulls out our 8 year old laptop which is sooo slow but says he hates the Mac. Chat Icon and yes, we have iPhones and iPads in our house.

PC.

I like to be able to change whatever settings I want and not be locked into a specific configuration.
And no need to use virtual machines or ported windows to mac apps.

So we ended up going with a Mac. I prefer a PC but as we stood in the store going over the pros and cons, we decided Mac. Hopefully I'm able to do my homework on it easily, but last time I just ended up using Google Docs.

What do you use for your online class? I've been taking MA+ credits and use Blackboard and Moodle. I don't have any problems with my Mac. I know Stony Brook gives students free Office so no need to buy

For the classes, they use Blackboard and most of the stuff I write is in Google docs then I add the text to Blackboard.

Yeah, I use PCs at work too so I think it was even harder to make the transition. LOL.

See, and i think the same way about PC's - it all depends on what you're used to.
