Would this annoy you?

Honest opinions welcome . Would you be annoyed if a a family member entered your house and started cleaning ( dusting, sweeping, arranging things without asking you if it was okay ?

Re: Would this annoy you?

My ex MIL used to come and clean my house and it never bothered me because 1. It was just because she wanted to help 2. my house was never cleaner than when she stayed for a few days Chat Icon

However, moving things would trigger my OCD and drive me insane.

ETA: we're divorced and she still does this when she is in town and stops by Chat Icon

Re: Would this annoy you?

Yes my MIL (dhs stepmother) came in and wiped down my kitchen table with spray before we ate. Umm sorry. I had a newborn and a 2 year. And you're not licking the table. Calm down asssshole.

Re: Would this annoy you?

For no reason? Yes, it would bother me. But when my LO was 4 weeks old, he got the flu and was in the hospital...while we were there for 4 days, my MIL cleaned my ENTIRE house from top to bottom, washed everything, etc. and it was EXTREAMLY helpful. I think if there's a good reason its fine, but not "just because".

Re: Would this annoy you?

My gut reaction was NO. But, I think it would depend on the family member. If it were my mom or sis, I wouldn't mind. But, if it were an aunt or someone like that, I think I'd be a little annoyed.

Re: Would this annoy you?

It depends who the family member is. My mother does this on the rare occasion that she is in my house and I love it. She actually will just start cleaning out closets and my pantry etc and it'g great for me! But she does the same to my brother and I know it annoys the crap out of my sister in law. If my mother in law did it I probably wouldn't care either. There was a time in my life that I might have gotten annoyed but now it saves me from having to do it, I don't care. But if it wasn't my mother or mother in law I would find it odd.

Re: Would this annoy you?

Yes, but mostly I'm confused how this scenario would even occur. Like, they just walked in when you weren't home and did this? Or they were invited over for dinner and just took it upon themselves to find your broom and start sweeping? Either one, I would have just stood there staring at them in disbelief...

Re: Would this annoy you?

1000% YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I get really annoyed when people overstep in my home. When you visit MY house you don't go through my closets and cabinets, help yourself to everything, move my furniture or knick knacks, clean, etc. You should ALWAYS respect someone else's home when you're visiting as a guest. I would NEVER think to go into someone's home and take it upon myself to touch or do anything in a space that isn't mine.

Re: Would this annoy you?

Just because of their own OCD and you never asked for help? Yes. Incredibly rude!

I would make a point to go to their master bedroom next and open all the drawers. I would. Lol

I couldn't agree more!!! Lol this is the first thing my mom does when she comes over and I just hand her the broom lol I do not get offended I rejoice. She's like Monica Geller. (She doesn't do it in other people's homes though just her kids and we don't mind lol)

I wish my MIL would do the same lol

I can see how this would annoy you though.

Depends on who it is...if it is my mother I would not mind--but I would find it strange of a random family member just started cleaning unless I was prepping for a party or something.

Would annoy me -- and HAS annoyed me....MIL and FIL do this and it drives me nuts -- I have come home from work to find my linen closets rearranged, or my fridge cleaned out....the worst (although not quite the same) was when we moved into the house, MIL and FIL came to help -- I SPECIFICALLY told MIL that I wanted to put my kitchen together and put things away as there were things from our wedding that we finally could put away instead of being in my parent's basement -- she is about 6' tall and I'm 5' tall, so it was important that I could access the things I used most often -- well, she went ahead and put things away anyway -- I was so annoyed (DH called and told me -- knowing that I'd be upset because I told her NOT to touch that stuff) -- that before I got home he had her take everything out of the cabinets again. lol. When I've complained to DH about their efforts in my house he says "they cant help it." It really annoys me - especially also because he gets unnerved when my parents just offer advice on things. OOPs, sorry for the vent and taking over the post -- but UGH, this drives me nuts!!!

ETA: SIL once told me that her father got up during a dinner party while everyone was still talking, and started washing the host's dishes....she said everyone was sort of uncomfortable but its "just the way he is." I tend to think this is nuts -- and rude.

Re: Would this annoy you?

See i hate cleaning so you would think I would LOVE this but IMO it's not about the actual cleaning and less for me to do- it's about boundaries and privacy.
I would never go into another persons home and touch things or start cleaning- even my sister or mom.
Unless they asked me to, IMO it's just rude and overstepping
