Anxiety
What are some techniques you use to calm down your anxiety? At the moment I do not have access to any Xanax, lol. I can get something similar, though.
I'm going away next week, and I'm not sure what the hell I was thinking when I booked this trip (Safari in Botswana, etc.). It's getting to the point where I don't even want to go .
I guess I should have paid more attention to details, but I didn't. I probably did that b/c I never would have booked it. I really want to go on this trip and I've been planning it in my head for 15 years.
First, I was afraid of taking the flight. Now, I'm worried about taking this boat ride and getting eaten by a hippo. I realize this sounds so ridiculous just typing this.
What do you do to calm down?

I used to get bad anxiety before anything new... Like starting a new job, first date, interviews etc... I found that just taking walks helps me... Get my mind off of what's coming and some exercise helps.

Re: Anxiety
Meditate. Think about something else. Get a good book for the flight and read it so that you are engrossed in it.

Let yourself have the bad thoughts instead of fighting them and then try and move on to something else.

Re: Anxiety
I got an app that helps me called Buddhify. I also find quotes or pictures that help me and look at them or repeat them when I am having a hard time. Sometimes while it may look silly I hold my heart close my eyes and just tell myself it will ok. Someone once told me to also take your tongue and put it to the roof of your mouth and take Deep breathes.
Good luck

I deal with this too. I find that relaxing classical music helps me a bit, and a glass of wine. Think about all the exciting things you're going to do - you planned this trip for a reason!

Drink. Seriously, I have anxiety about things like that too. It sucks to feel like that, but a few drinks helps me!

Re: Anxiety
I "ground" myself. I remind myself that what I'm feeling is my anxiety and not a reality of what's going to happen or is happening.
I found this on pinterest of all places and it's been effective
Look around you Name 5 things you can see
4 things you can touch
3 things you can hear
2 things you can smell
1 thing you can taste
Anxiety can be a nightmare but you can definitely move past it so you can enjoy your trip. You could also make a diary of sorts. Get a notebook and paste pictures of the beautiful things you are going to do and see while you are there. Also when you are calm fill the book with pep talks to yourself about how brave you are how much fun you will have etc, etc. When you feel the anxiety creeping in pull it out and go through it slowly.
Good luck!

I eliminate coffee and chocolate. seriously. I don't know if you are a big coffee/chocolate person, but the caffeine is a huge contributor to anxiety.
I'm not an everyday coffee drinker but I do love chocolate.

Anxiety
I have a lot of anxiety around travel (planes, driving on big highways, etc). I've been in therapy for flying and took my second flight this weekend. Yes, I had Valium, but I was still scared so I started every flight listening to a meditation app I downloaded (talks you through breathing and concentrating on something to take your mind off the fear). I also distracted myself with movies and phone games (candy crush). Find something you can do to pass the time (if applicable since not easy on a boat) and learn to meditate to ground yourself.
Best of luck bc it sounds like a great opportunity!

I have a glass of wine not drunk... lol when I cant... I will listen to music... I remind myself that its just my mind taking over. I take very deep calming breaths. And talk myself off the ledge... I meditate. I downloaded some meditation from iTunes that I have found helped me SO MUCH. I was doing it every single night and found I was sleeping better...

Re: Anxiety
I really don't like to fly- it makes me anxious. In June we went to Disney and I was so worried about the flight. I reminded myself of all the people I know who fly all the time without incident, and who've flown safely to and from Disney. So maybe remind yourself that lots and lots of people have taken the trip you're going on, without incident. Have a great time!

This! My therapist actually had me think of 5 things that would calm me involving my senses. One small that calms me, something I can see that calms me, something I can taste that calms me, etc. I keep it with me so that it can "bring me back" if I'm having bad anxiety. Something like a lotion that I love, I can smell it, feel it, etc. Brings me back to the present.

Re: Anxiety
Thank you everyone for your tips! They are already helping me!
I drink wine, so I will be doing that before I get on the plane.
I don't do too much walking, but I've been doing more biking to get rid of anxiety now.
The 5 things will really help. I'm going to search for a few more 5 thing things.
I have no idea how to meditate.
I'm going to get that app suggested above. I also will load up on classical music as I've been interested in that.
But what can I do when I don't have access to these things. The 5 things will help in that scenario, but the wine, music, and the app will not. This "boat" ride is in a canoe. That's what I'm worried about.
Keep the suggestions coming! They have been really helpful.

Re: Anxiety
I would def try to get something similar to Xanax just in case, but hopefully once you get there and see how it is, your mind will be put at ease. Have you tried youtubing the experiences? Maybe it'll help you to know what to expect? (Although that could go sour if it looks worse than what you expected LOL)

Yes, I have YouTubed the experiences. It kind of makes it worse, lol.
I am going to try and talk to the others at our lodge during dinner and see how their experiences go. I kind of need to see it for myself first. But DH has agreed we don't have to do this canoe thing right away.
So we may just do some fishing instead of the canoe thing.
To give you an idea:

Just remember that the guide does it all the time. Have you read others' experiences? It is probably less scary than videos. People probably go a bit frightened, but return, glad they did it The little I know of Botswana seems beautiful & serene.
Also, just remind yourself of all the who have this on their wishlist, and you are actually getting to do it.
