Stray cat had kittens in my yard...what to do?

We thought she was a neighbors outdoor cat so we were waiting for her to take them out of the yard when they got older but now we see mama is a hunter and is bringing dead animals into my yard. Chat Icon There are at least 4 kittens. They are older...not newborns. Who can I call? The kittens are super cute but I am not a cat person, I have a newborn coming in a few weeks myself and I have 2 small kids playing in my yard everyday...don't need dead baby bunny carcass on the lawn. Do I call a shelter? SCPA?

You can call, but they probably won't take them. And if they do take them they'll just end up euthanizing them.

We had the same situation and decided it was best to let nature take its course. They wandered off when they are old enough (6-8 weeks.)

your best bet is to TNR them, have them fixed and released this way they wont reproduce. You can call Little Shelter or last hope for assistance, with trapping etc.

Best case scenario! It's so much work though! Those little buggers never get into the trap easily. Last time it took us 3 days to get them into the trap! Chat Icon

This could not be happening at a worse time. I'm 34 weeks pregnant and having all sorts of back problems, it's a 100 f-ing degrees out, I'm having a party at my house next weekend and it's going to stink like rotting dead animal and cat pee and the best bet is to try and trap them? Kill me now.

What if I borrowed someone's dog? Would that scare them away? I can tolerate dog sitting for a few days.

Will they take them and release them? Where are you supposed to release them?

Call Little Shelter in Huntington and ask them. Hopefully they will receive medical care and be adopted out.

I honestly couldn't say for sure. I've never done it; I just know that the program has helped with the amount of ferals on LI in a safe and humane way. I would call them to ask because I don't want to give the wrong answer.

You are supposed to release them back to where you found them.

Okay, I THOUGHT that might have been it, but didn't want to say for sure.

That is good to know!

I don't think using a dog is a good or nice idea. I know its a tough time for you, stray cats after 8 weeks almost never get adopted out unless they have been socialized early, not like dogs. Cats in general are less likely to be adopted.
Spay America is a program that will help with the cost. Many times you have to trap yourself, BUT because you're preg maybe they can help find a volunteer to help you.

Its not easy to TNR, I've done it. FM if you have questions. good luck

try the org P.A.T,S as well, when I get home from work I'll look her up, she has been know to help with the trapping part.

You might have to be willing to help with the cost of TNR

When we had done it there was an organization offering certificates for 25 dollars per cat. I can't seem to find that specifically right now but there is this list.
Free or Low Cost Spay/Neuter Clinics

Thanks for the information. This whole situation is so annoying. I called about a dozen no kill shelters today. Nobody will take them or help me. I called my town shelter who told me that they can't take them and I should just make my backyard unappealing to the cats by spraying vinegar, putting coffee grinds and orange peels out and using motion detector sprinklers. That's why I thought a dog would also help in that regard.

I feel bad. The kittens are super cute and so playful. I wish I knew someone who was looking for kittens. This makes me so mad though. One of the people I spoke with said people adopt kittens all the time then realize they have allergies or they don't like having a cat and release it and that's how it likely has ended up in my yard and become my problem. People really need to think about what a pet entails before bringing one home. I'm so irritated by this whole thing.

I have been given some names of FB groups who I have reached out to and am hopeful I get a good response from one of them. Thanks to all of you for your advice.

Try contacting Guardians of Rescue or Save-a-pet. It's kitten season so many places are packed out right now but at the very least they need to be fixed including mom because otherwise you will have many many more around shortly.

A dog probably would have been helpful before she had the kittens. If the dog was there she would not have thought the area was considered 'safe' and she wouldn't have chosen your backyard as a place to nest.

If you do it now the dog would scare the kittens and mother so much that she will freak out and take them someplace else. You may think this is a good scenario, but - you may put yourself into the WORST case scenario - you're going to freak the mother out and she's going to leave without the babies and not come back.
Then you have abandoned kittens in your yard that are unprotected from predators that aren't being fed - and in that case they're good as dead unless you take it upon yourself to become the surrogate mother (which I've also done and is harder than TNR).

We had a feral cat this spring have a litter next to our central air conditioner. We debated for a long while what to do with them. Due to circumstances we couldn't TNR them. We decided that it was best to let nature take it's course. We didnt feed or shelter them. We made sure that the mother was calm so she would continue to mother the babies. One day the oil delivery man came, freaked out the mother and she moved the cats (because she thought she found a safer place then the place.) Then she brought them back the next day, because the area was safe again. After 4-5 weeks, they just disappeared. She taught them to hunt and they were on their way. We decided that we didn't need to interfere and potentially make the situation worse.

It's a sh1tty situation to be in, and very sad. I hope you can find someone to help you out or decide to just let it be for the next few weeks.
