Crib bedding

Ok so I spent hrs looking for crib bedding and didn't find anything I really liked. My SIL said not to use bumpers because the bumpers could smother the baby. So I just registered for sheets and two blankets that go with the color theme. Now my mom is saying I should Def register for a bumper set because the baby may roll over and hit her head. I'm all confused.

What's your take on the bumper sets?

Re: Crib bedding

For me, no bumpers. DD has head butted me plenty of times and it doesn't seem to bother her, but the way she rolls around in her bassinet at night makes me worry about bumpers. I do plan to get the mesh bumpers once she transitions to her crib so she doesn't get an arm or leg stuck in between the bars.

Another option are those bumpers that you wrap on each bar, but they are pricey.

ETA: I did get a bedding set but one without bumpers. It came with a crib skirt, fitted sheet, and comforter which is hung over the crib for the time being. Once we start using the crib, we'll either put it away or hang it on our recliner in the room.

ETAA: Also wanted to mention, we got a TON of blankets at my shower and as just baby gifts in general. So I wouldn't go crazy with those, you'll get them anyway.

No bumpers. We have wonder bumpers but now DD just whacks herself on the rail so I've given up!

Re: Crib bedding

Bumpers are not recommended due to their link to SIDS It's not even so much smothering as it is the fact that they block air flow.
They are actually banned in certain areas.

Get the breathable bumpers posted above or get nothing at all. A baby will never hit it's head bad enough to get injured.

I just got a fitted crib sheet- you can't use blankets or quilts anyway

I had the breathable bumpers for DS1. DS2 has nothing because the bumpers are a PITA to put on so he has had to live with bumping his head on occasion. The main benefit to the bumpers, IMO, is keeping the binkie in the crib. Otherwise, it falls out through the slats and that's really annoying.

No bumpers we just have sheets and a crib skirt. I do have the comforter for the set but it's draped over the rocker.

Re: Crib bedding

I'll be bad mom of the year and say that I actually did use regular bumpers with DS and I plan to use them again this time with DD. DS really didnt roll around in his crib much at all. In the very beginning they cant move around at all really, so the bumpers were no issue at that point. Once he did begin to roll, he still never rolled into them. But if I was worried, I would have just removed them.

I registered for a bedding set that includes them this time. I plan to put them on her crib and when she starts rolling over enough for them to become an issue, I'll decide at that point if they need to come off.

Skip the bumpers they are a SIDS risk-The American academy of pediatrics advises against any bedding that is loose- blankets, bumpers, pillows, etc

You just need a few sheets. You can't use blankets with a newborn...and likely won't give your baby a blanket until about a year old. My 15mo uses one of the A&A muslin blankets only.

Re: Crib bedding

Crib bedding is such a waste of money. Mesh bumpers with sheets and put a sleep sack on the baby.

Re: Crib bedding

Just wanted to mention that tbe SIDS risk is not due to the baby rolling into the bumper and smothering. The bumpers block air flow into the crib and reduced air flow has been linked to SIDS. So.even when they are too young to move around the airflow risk is still the issue.
They really serve 0 purpose anyway.

Ok so now that the bedding is out what do I use when the baby goes to sleep at night. I see a few mentioned not to use blankets. Any recommendations?

We did no bumpers and I don't really recall anytime DS bumped his head in the last 2+ years.

Eta: at night, we either swaddled him or used a sleep sack.

Swaddle when they are newborns.
Sleep sacks when they outgrow the swaddle.
They shouldn't be overheated at all either.

Yup, sleep sacks. DD lasted only maybe 2 weeks being swaddled- she hated it. We tried every manner of swaddling sack, too, but the girl likes to sleep with her arms over head. Now that it's summer and it's hot, she just sleeps in footie PJs and is comfortable. When it gets a little cooler, she'll be back in the wearable blankets, like these:

Crib bedding

I use the bumpers you wrap around the bars bc when they start to move in their sleep my kids would bang their head on the crib. This helped a lot
