Terrible mom??

Long story, but at a party last weekend, met a mom who made me feel horrible for using Johnson & Johnson, Gerber, & not cosleeping with my children. I tried to be polite and say "everyone does what they think is best" but it has really stayed with me and I've been feeling like a bad mom for not being aware of all the things she told me were "wrong" with the products I've been using. Am I overthinking this or should I change what I've been doing?

Terrible mom??

Sounds like a total sanctimommy. I won't use Johnson and Johnson but what's wrong with Gerber? And cosleeping is a parenting choice. Don't let her make you feel bad.

ETA: I've used J&J but I buy other brands.

Do whats best for you. Everyone has an opinion on everything. Almost everything now a days is dangerous for you Chat Icon Chat Icon

I try not to use Johnson and Johnson but that's me and I still use it at times

As for cosleeping IMO I have no idea why people do this and want to. I never have; I was always afraid of rolling on my kids and the one rule in my house is no kids are allowed in my bed BUT that's me and people love co-sleeping more power to you.

This mom you met sounds like an entitled snobby bitchh if she kept insisting that her way was the only way and yours was not. Don't let it bother you! Chat Icon

ETA: I thought I read that J&J was removing whatever the bad ingredient is in their products

If it makes you feel better, I've used Johnson and Johnson products, my kids have eaten Gerber food AND there is NO way in holy h-e-l-l you could EVER get me to co-sleep with my kids. I'm with them ALL day, when I go to sleep it's MY time and MY bed. Chat Icon

Terrible mom??

Why would anyone in their right mind want to cosleep with their kids? So risky.

What exactly is wrong with Johnson and JohnsoN?

Do not feel bad about yourself as a mom.....it's rude of her to even judge you. Every parent makes personal decisions on what is best for them. If your kids have are healthy and happy and have food on the table and have a roof over their heads then you are doing a great job.

Re: Terrible mom??

I use J & J baby shampoo and I fed both my LO Gerber. I co-slept with one kid but the other is in his crib and has been since day 1. Its what works for you and yours girl...people who do this to other people have serious esteem issues and need to believe they are right to validate themselves. It's sad and pathetic and the main reason I have like 2 friends in my social circle. I just don't have time for crap like this. Fast foward 15years from now and her little snowflake will be eating Mickey D's and dying their precious J&J free hair purple with Kool Aid like the rest of em. I would just dismiss her negative narcacisstic BS and know it come from a place of deep insecurity. You do you!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I know it's hard, but I would just forget about it now. She sounds like a real obnoxious person.

Speaking of not judging...it's a personal choice. It works for some people and for some kids. If it's not for you cool but there are plenty of people in "thier right mind" who sleep with their kids.

Re: Terrible mom??

Chat Icon Don't let her get to you. I hate moms who think they're so perfect and feel the need to lecture other moms on all the things they're doing that will permanently damage their children Chat Icon Chat Icon

As far as J&J...I used it with my DS until he was 4, then switched to Aveeno (which is also made by J&J) until he was 6. I did stop using their products at 6 and wont be using them with this next baby, but my DS is perfectly fine even though I used them on him for years. He didnt grow an extra arm or anything. Plenty of moms have been using J&J for MANY MANY years and their children are perfectly fine. Heck, ALL my mom used on us was J&J (which is why I chose it originally for my DS). Dont beat yourself up over stuff like that....its your choice as a mother. You know what's best for your child.

Co-sleeping too...that's such a personal choice. For her to make you feel bad for not doing it is ridiculous. There are plenty of studies that show that co-sleeping is dangerous and also a bad habit. I'm not saying they are correct, I'm simply stating that there are two sides to every story. Just like some people believe breast is best, and others believe there are very strong benefits to formula feeding. No one way is the "right way"...it's what works for YOU and YOUR children.

I think as a whole, mothers in general have become a culture in which we judge way too much, hold ourselves on a pedestal, and look down on other moms. It's terrible. We're all moms. It's a hard job. We should be supporting each other. Really, shame on her for making you feel bad about your choices as a mother!!

Terrible mom??

The nerve of people! Everyone has their own parenting philosophies and style of doing things!
Your kids are happy and healthy that's what counts! I'll just be happy if my twins are alive at the end of the day!

Re: Terrible mom??

Thank you ladies, I really wanted to tell her off but tried to take the higher road with my "whatever works for you...." attitude. After a while I did stop engaging in the conversation with this woman, however, I heard her giving her advice to a young mom to be at the party. Looking back, I guess I should just laugh-some of the things she was telling this other young mom to be was that she's a self-proclaimed "nipple nazi" because she KNOWS that breast is best & wants to tell every mom that. She was also strongly against Dreft detergent & said organic & growing your own food is really the only way to go. I'm glad I'm not the only one who is making these parenting "mistakes" lol

Don't let others make you feel less. Just thank them for advice and do what you think is best. We do the best we can. If you want to make a change, do it. Don't worry about the past. You can decide as you buy new products.

Re: Terrible mom??

Here's a piece of advice that you totally didn't ask for, but like that jackass at the party, I'm going to give to you anyway ..........

YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING. - You know what feels right to you. And if you don't, I'm SURE you have people you trust to ask questions and get advice from. (and if you don't, just caome here, we are MORE than happy to give our $0.02)

DO NOT, EVER let anyone let you think you're a bad mother because of the products you do or don't use, the food you do or do not feed your children, the clothes, shoes, activities, amount of time you spend with them etc etc etc ..........

Are they bathed? Are they fed? Do they have a place to sleep? Are they taken care of? Are they happy? Do you LOVE them? Guess what? You're a good mother. End of Story.

ANYONE who tells you differently is a self rightous, self important moron.

There's a plethora of reasons. But, on a thread about being judgemental, it's nice to see the trend continuing with judging others

To the OP... people are jerks. Do what works for you. One day your sweet angel is going to be a teenager and NONE of this will matter.

I thought the same until it was the only way anyone could get any sleep after my daughters brain injury. I hate it but we need sleep, and she's perfectly safe. But it's not my ideal situation.
