Another attack in France

Terrorists In France Attack Church

PARIS — French President Francois Hollande tells reporters that Tuesday’s deadly attack at a Catholic church in Normandy was carried out by “by two terrorists in the name of Daesh” — another name for ISIS.

Two attackers seized hostages and killed a priest by slitting his throat before being shot and killed by police, French officials said.

Another person inside the church was seriously injured and is hovering between life and death, Interior Ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet said.

Police managed to rescue three people from the church in the small northwestern town of Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray, Brandet said.

The hostage-taking occurred during morning Mass, he told reporters.

The identities of the attackers and motive for the attack are unclear, according to a security official, who was not authorized to be publicly named.

Tuesday’s slaying inside a church “is obviously a drama for the Catholic community, for the Christian community,” Brandet told reporters.

Hollande and Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve were heading to the town.

Brandet, speaking on BFM TV, said the RAID special intervention force was searching the church and its perimeter for possible explosives.

France is currently on high alert after an attack in Nice on Bastille Day — July 14 — that killed 84 people and a string of deadly attacks last year claimed by the Islamic State group that killed 147 others.

France is also under a state of emergency and has

France is also under a state of emergency and has extra police presence in the wake of the Nice attack in which a man barreled his truck down the city’s famed Promenade des Anglais, mowing down holiday crowds.

Islamic State extremists have urged followers to attack French churches and the group is believed to have planned at least one church attack earlier.

In April 2015, an Algerian student who was arrested after shooting himself in the leg was found with heavy weapons, bulletproof vests and documents linked to Islamic State. He is charged with killing a young woman inside her car the same day.

According to French authorities, the suspect, Sid Ahmed

He is charged with killing a young woman inside her car the same day. According to French authorities, the suspect, Sid Ahmed Ghlam, was sent by the Belgian Abdelhamid Abaaoud to attack a church in Villejuif, just outside of Paris.

A cell directed by Abaaoud later carried out the Nov. 13 attacks in Paris that left 130 people dead and the March 22 attacks in Brussels that killed 32 people.

Pope Francis has condemned in the strongest terms the attack.

Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said in a statement Tuesday that the attack hits particularly hard “because this horrific violence took place in a church, a sacred place in which the love of God is announced, and the barbaric murder of a priest and the involvement of the faithful.”

Lombardi called the attack “more terrible news, that adds to a series of violence in these days that have left us upset, creating immense pain and worry.”

The pope, he said, has expressed “pain and horror for this absurd violence, with the strongest condemnation for every form of hatred and prayer for those affected.”

The Vatican expressed its closeness to the Roman Catholic Church in France and the Archdiocese of Rouen, as well as to the affected communities and the people of France.

I'm more concerned with the how. How is this going to end? What, if anything, can be done to obliterate this group? It is so disturbing how violent they are. The media doesn't really talk about how violent they are either (IMO anyway). I know there is no need for mass hysteria but I was just reading last week how there was a cover up as to what actually transpired in that attack at the theater in France in November. I was under the impression gunmen came in, shot all the people and that was that. But apparently they raped, tortured, mutilated, decapitated and disemboweled people first and that was really kept quiet (according to the article I was reading. Some investigator who was there spoke out last week). The article was so horrifying. These people are total savages with zero regard for human life. It's terrifying to think its just a matter of time before that starts happening here.

Many people would have spoken up if that what had transpired. My sister's boyfriend was supposed to go to the concert with friends. He decided not to go at the last minute. One of the friend got shot in the foot and they hid under the stage. They would have said something.

I agree with this. I feel like with social media we know EVERYTHING and all details right away.
I doubt they would have kept all those people quiet.

Re: Another attack in France

I am so sad about all of this.Chat Icon My niece is supposed to go abroad for the fall semester-France, Italy, and Spain. The family is all up in arms about it now. My SIL doesn't want her to go now, she has a bad feeling. My niece wants to go, is excited. Of course she knows what is going on but says what is to keep me safe in NY?

I am torn. I am not an alarmist at all, but part of me doesn't want her to go. She is fighting tooth and nail with her mother right now and not speaking to her (feels she is trying to hold her back, typical teenage stuff). She wants me to talk to her mom to tell her to let her go, but I am so torn. She says if her mom cancels her trip, she will never forgive her. My SIL says she will not be able to sleep if she is gone and what if God forbid something happens, even if my niece is ok, how could she get in touch with her, what if airport shuts down, etc.

Something that should be an amazing experience (going abroad) is now turning into something awful. I'm so depressed at the state of the world today.

I just checked, which I should have done earlier, and according to Snopes it is not true. I'm officially a rumor-spreader. I'm reviving my 7th grade self apparently. Chat Icon

I believe Belgium canceled their student program with Turkey due to the number of attacks in Turkey. Your SIL has valid concerns. Kids think they are invincible and it's not going to happen to them. Parents do worry and I think kids don't get it until they become parents themselves. If Countries cancels student programs in some Countries then you know it's not just an irrational mom. The threat is there. Who, what, where is so random. There had been many attacks in France in the last 18 months. At least 6 that I can think of at this moment. Belgium's airport. 4 attacks in not even 2 weeks in Germany. Plus all the attacks that were averted. That barely make the news in Europe and not at all here. Many people have been arrested in France, Belgium, Netherland, etc...witn "plans" for attacks. I do understand your niece being disappointed. Things happen everywhere but Europe is being targeted. As a parent I would say no. And I am from there.

its yet another outrageous attack from a group of people who want no peace, only martyrdom and chaos.

I wonder how much of this European countries are going to tolerate before mass deportings start.

The real issue is how to deal with Countries' own citizens getting radicalized. Most of the attacks were done by Country born citizens not refugees. One of the attacker had an police ankle bracelet and known already for terrorist radicalization. People are getting mad for stalling on this. There are a few thousand known radicalized born citizens in western Europe. They have to act on a solution on those people. They have been stalling but this is not going to fly with people no more. The Government is going to have to actually do something about those people. They were talking after November about removing their nationality away. This is also an election year just like the US. The opposition is no longer United with the Gov like they were last November.

That's PR speak for "We don't know if it's directly tied to a terrorist organization, and if it is, we don't know which one yet."

The attack was claimed by ISIS within 2 hours. They knew right away what the attack was about. One of the cops recognized one of the attackers right away.

That church was also listed in a terrorists hit list a year ago in an apartment search.
