eww! restrooms in france??? reallly??

i'm watching hgtv's house hunters international. it just started, but the quick preview of the episode, they showed a loo with ONLY a toilet.

the house hunter asks, "isn't there a wash basin?" the realtor says, "that's very french"

sorry i wasn't too clear, i was trying to type so quickly lol

they were showing the houses the couple will be looking at. one of the houses had a little room in (what seems to be the basement) with only a toilet.

the lady asks about the sink (to wash your hands). the realtor stated that a toilet with no sink if "very french"

that grossed me out. that it's very common that the french don't have a sink to wash their hands after they use the toilet

It's extremely common in Europe to have a toilet in one small room and bath/sink in another. That's how I grew up. Doesn't mean people don't wash their hands after using a bathroom-they just need to do it in the next room.

One of the great pluses of that kind of arrangement is, in a small apartment with single facility, someone can be taking a shower while another person is using a bathroom.

ok. i've learned something!
the way the man spoke, it sounded as though they don't wash.

When I lived in London it was like this. The room with just the toilet was the "toilet" and the room with the sink/bath/shower was the "bathroom." They were on opposite sides of our flat, and you had to walk through the kitchen to get from one to the other so we usually just washed our hands in the kitchen.

After a day or two there, we didn't even notice or think it was weird anymore.

Lots of houses here in the UK have two rooms, one with a toilet and one with a bathtub and sink only. Its common and lots of people love it. My in laws have one of those and their house is worth a small fortune. Its pretty normal outside of North America.

I had that when I lived in Sydney. It was good b/c I was sharing a house with three other people.

I haven't seen it in Germany yet.

I've seen quite a few US bathrooms on HGTV with that sort of layout. The "loo" is separated inside the master bath. It's a room within a room, so DH can take his time reading the newspaper, and DW can still take a shower, makeup, etc, without having to watch him "doing his business".... Chat Icon Chat Icon

Where I grew up almost everyone has one toilet+sink and one bathtub/shower +sink. Including my parents . So it's like having two 1/2 bathrooms I guess. Never seen the one with just a toilet there, but I have seen that a lot in the Hamptons beach houses(LI)

and it's very convenient that way, especially if it's a big family or you have guests.
