I would let it go this time as accidents do happen. But if it becomes a habit I would find someone new.

I think you need to get off your high horse! OP, If it were me I would let it go, but if it happened again I would not hire her to clean my house. And if that makes me a spoiled b!tch, then so be it.
Hey I said she was free to fire her. No one should be stuck with a cleaning lady who sucks. There's a difference between firing someone and withholding their pay because they broke something (the original post is edited, but this is what the OP was considering). Imagine if your employer said "I'm not paying you because you broke XYZ?" You would be in uproar and get an employment lawyer. People working off the books have no recourse against such abuse though.
Eta - I work in the medical field where I have access to very expensive equipment. I would never be "docked pay" for breaking it even if my boss had to eat the cost. A teacher who breaks a smart board wouldn't be expected to pay for it. You would only support such an idea if you viewed cleaning people to be somehow less than the rest of us. OP should let it go this time and then fire her if it happened again. She could even fire her on the spot which would be perfectly fair. But docking pay for hours worked is inappropriate. I wonder if it's even LEGAL.

Re: Cleaning Lady and Breaking Things
I swear I always say nothing I can see on LIF will surprise me anymore but time and time again that's proven wrong. Who knew a thread about a broken dish could cause drama?
Personally I would not dock her for a one time incident but if it happened on a regular basis, I would be looking for a new cleaning lady.

How much was the bowl? Did she do a good job otherwise? I probably just wouldn't use her again.

I've used several cleaning people over the course of my life and I would never, ever even think of docking her pay. Things are broken over the course of a work day, any type of work, and I think it would be cruel to dock her pay because of an accident. I've certainly never had my pay docked because of anything I may have broken during work. And my cleaning ppl once accidentally threw out my husbands watch and wedding ring and while I was very annoyed I would never be so punitive as to expect them to pay. If this is a pattern and you are generally unhappy with her, you are free to fire her. Be grateful you are in the position to have a person clean your home and be in the possession of a very expensive bowl. Sorry this post rubbed me the wrong way. This is not a glamorous job and I feel for the people, usually illegal immigrants, who have these jobs. If she's on the books then it's not so bad, but if you are thinking of punishing someone you employ illegally to avoid taxes/healthcare then definitely let it go.
This is such a rude and condescending statement. Who are you to speak to her this way
Edit: To the OP, if the bowl was expensive, I would find a new cleaning lady. If it wasn't, I'd give her a second chance. Things happen. But it's not a great indicator that she did this on her very first day.

As an aside, where did you find a cleaning lady for $ 25/hr? The going rate seems to be $ 35/hr from what I am hearing (one of my coworkers pays this for her 2,400 sq ft home in Smithtown). I am tempted to hire Merry Maids/Molly Maids but dont want to be locked into an annual contract.

The opportunity to go to school, work hard, and be rewarded for it is not something frequently afforded to cleaning people.
That is such an ignorant statement.
Ok, so there's no cycle of poverty in this country? It's ignorant to assume that someone working off the books cleaning homes and getting charged for breaking China did not have great educational opportunities? Im not judging the capacity or capability of someone who became a cleaning person - I'm citing the lack of opportunities. I'm sure some people love their cleaning jobs, but from where I stand it looks like hard, thankless work that someone may not have chosen had he or she had more opportunities. Everyone loves to claim that their cleaning people make so money, have nice cars, etc to make them feel better about what they are doing - exploiting cheap labor. To then charge someone for breaking a piece of China by accident after the person expressed remorse is just gross. And like I said, I'll take crazy any day over that.
I don't exactly consider $25 per hour to be "cheap" labor. What would abe considered fair for a cleaning person then, $100 an hour?

Re: Cleaning Lady and Breaking Things
Why is it being assumed she is a poor destitute illegal immigrant. Most of the cleaning ladies the families in my area use are not poor, not illegal and frankly are either SAHM who do it as side work for extra spending money in the evening or on weekends or SAHM with older children and are choosing it, bc of its flexibility and great hourly rate to re-enter the workforce while still being able to put their kids on and off the bus, make school events, sports, etc.

If she makes $25/hour and say the bowl was $250, and you dock her the cost, you are essentially saying that since she broke your bowl, you are entitled to ten hours of unpaid labor. That's indentured servitude. Sorry, i just think that attitude is gross. If you are confident in your convictions then there is no conflict here and you don't have to defend yourself.
Do you take medicine for your crazy?
This is a truly awful thing to say.
Nothing she said to you merits this.
This is a board where people - primarily women - are supposed to be supporting each other.
We have all been there where a post gets under our skin.
The large majority of people on here have said essentially the same thing she did.
I think docking her pay would be a terrible thing to do.

Re: Cleaning Lady and Breaking Things
Let her go. I had a cleaning lady that broke the mirror of the vanity in my master bath and it took me so long to figure out how to fix it, then she broke my oven by using a cleaner in it when it's a self cleaning oven. There were other things too. If she already broke something it will continue to happen.

Id let this one go. It would've been nice for her to offer although I probably wouldn't accept. It was an accident, it happens but I'm very forgiving (and it costs me!). I think if it happens again and she did not offer I'd find someone new. I think everyone is entitled to one mess up.

I pay $20 an hour. Look on CL for someone independent.

The pro to hiring a company is that if something like this happened and the cleaning person broke something a actual company has insurance for this or even if they stole something.
If you are having a cleaning person in when you are not home I suggest a company that is insured.

I'd let it go, accidents happen. I would NEVER ask her to pay for it.
This IMO is the risk you take by hiring someone else to clean your house.

I am sure there are cheaper rates but I believe in getting what I pay for. I dont want to cheap out and get someone who breaks things routinely or steals from me, especially if this person is alone cleaning in my home while I am away. Theres a certain level of trust I am terrified of relinquishing when hiring a maid which is why I initially sought out a service (which does background checks,is insured, etc). I am also overly anal about cleanliness, spent 3 hours cleaning my 3 bed/2bath 1700 sq ft home over the weekend and hope whoever does come to clean is just as meticulous as me, but I have my doubts.

Let it go. If you break something at work, you're not responsible to pay for it out of your check. Theoretically, if you hire a company to do something and they break something of yours they would be liable in some fashion, but I don't think i'd go after them unless I thought it was egregious.
I say fire her or keep her on without trying to charge her.
I think the back and forth on this thread is ridiculous

Re: Cleaning Lady and Breaking Things
If someone visiting accidentally broke the bowl, would you expect them to pay for it?
I would never expect my cleaning woman to pay for something she broke by accident. If the person is generally careless and breaks many things then that's a different story and they should be let go but a one-time thing, no way.

Re: Cleaning Lady and Breaking Things
Thanks for everyone's comments. I realized that it def would not be the right thing to do to ask her to replace the bowl pretty much as soon as I posted the question--and your responses solidified that in my mind. I think I was initially just peeved and upset that it happened at all.
In any case, accidents do happen. Im now over it.
As for certain posters, assumptions and condescensions about the horror and cruelty of even considering it and the mal treatment of cleaning persons in general...
