Cleaning Lady and Breaking Things

I just started with a new cleaning lady- today was her second day cleaning my house- Apparently while she was vacuuming she broke a relatively expensive crystal bowl.

Im not sure how to handle this-- do i just let it go or do I ask her to pay for it?

ETA:Thanks for everyone's comments. I realized that it def would not be the right thing to do to ask her to replace the bowl pretty much as soon as I posted the question--and your responses solidified that in my mind. I think I was initially just peeved and upset that it happened at all.

In any case, accidents do happen. Im now over it.

As for certain posters, assumptions and condescensions about the horror and cruelty of even considering it and the mal treatment of cleaning persons in general... Chat Icon

Nope she is just an individual. I am tempted to let it go and if it was my previous cleaning lady that I had had for 7 years no question I would let it go. For some reason since she is new and doesnt have a proven track recrord with us Im kind of annoyed by this/.

My in laws were home when it happened-- they said she felt bad and apologized.

My first reaction was to get upset, but I'm starting to think it would be mean to ask her to pay for it-- accidents happen i guess.

You need to let it go. It was an accident and a risk you take by having someone clean your house.

Re: Cleaning Lady and Breaking Things

I've used several cleaning people over the course of my life and I would never, ever even think of docking her pay. Things are broken over the course of a work day, any type of work, and I think it would be cruel to dock her pay because of an accident. I've certainly never had my pay docked because of anything I may have broken during work. And my cleaning ppl once accidentally threw out my husbands watch and wedding ring and while I was very annoyed I would never be so punitive as to expect them to pay. If this is a pattern and you are generally unhappy with her, you are free to fire her. Be grateful you are in the position to have a person clean your home and be in the possession of a very expensive bowl. Sorry this post rubbed me the wrong way. This is not a glamorous job and I feel for the people, usually illegal immigrants, who have these jobs. If she's on the books then it's not so bad, but if you are thinking of punishing someone you employ illegally to avoid taxes/healthcare then definitely let it go.

Wow. This is a bit condescending. I am greatful for the financial position that I am in but I also went to school for many years and sacrificed and busted my butt and work long hours to be in that position. NOthing was handed to me and I appreciate the value of things. So being greatful for being able to "afford" a cleaning lady doesnt necessarily mean that I should just be ok with my belongings being broken. My money does not grow on trees so that I can buy things and replace things as often as I would like. .

I would address it with her and inform her if it happens again, then you may have to dock her pay. Then see.

I would let it go this time as accidents do happen. But if it becomes a habit I would find someone new.

Sorry, but I stand by it. The opportunity to go to school, work hard, and be rewarded for it is not something frequently afforded to cleaning people. I'm sure you do work very hard for your things but I was still taken aback that someone would even think to charge an illegal immigrant hired to clean their home for accidentally breaking an expensive bowl that I am guessing is decorative and not even functional. I mean you even have proof that she was upset about it. Docking a cleaning person is cruel. Once a poor, uninsured driver in a beat up car hit my father's brand new jaguar and even though he was cringing on the inside, my father waved him off and told him to go. He had perspective of the situation. He was rich, the driver was poor, and he could let this go.

And I stand by my position that you are being awfully condescending, presumptuous and judgmental. You are of course entitled to your opinion but you are making an awful lot of assumptions about both my financial position and my cleaning lady's. Im glad that your father is rich- I am not. My cleaning lady is similarly not poor- she drives a nicer, newer car than I do.

My "illegal immigrant" - which btw im not sure why you are assuming she is an illegal immigrant, because I do not believe that she is, charges $25 an hour to clean my house. I made less than that working as a lawyer the first half of my career.

To characterize my question as cruel is absurd. You may take a position on it but you are not entitled to chastize me or suggest that I am cruel and acting punitively.

You can get off your high horse now and take a drive in your dad's jaguar. I was asking for the etiquette on the situation not to be judged, but thanks for your 2 cents.

If she makes $25/hour and say the bowl was $250, and you dock her the cost, you are essentially saying that since she broke your bowl, you are entitled to ten hours of unpaid labor. That's indentured servitude. Sorry, i just think that attitude is gross. If you are confident in your convictions then there is no conflict here and you don't have to defend yourself.

I think it's mean to dock a cleaning woman's pay for breaking my fancy BOWL (which is what your original post said before you edited it). If that makes me crazy, so be it. Id rather be crazy then the type of person who would even think to do that.

I've never heard of anyone actually reducing pay for a mistake, I think she'd probably quit. It's unfortunate that your item was broken but it happens, and she was honest. if you are happy with her otherwise, I would just move on and hope it was a one time mistake.

Ok, so there's no cycle of poverty in this country? It's ignorant to assume that someone working off the books cleaning homes and getting charged for breaking China did not have great educational opportunities? Im not judging the capacity or capability of someone who became a cleaning person - I'm citing the lack of opportunities. I'm sure some people love their cleaning jobs, but from where I stand it looks like hard, thankless work that someone may not have chosen had he or she had more opportunities. Everyone loves to claim that their cleaning people make so money, have nice cars, etc to make them feel better about what they are doing - exploiting cheap labor. To then charge someone for breaking a piece of China by accident after the person expressed remorse is just gross. And like I said, I'll take crazy any day over that.

OOOH You got me!

My original post said do i let it go or "dock her pay" to which i changed that to "ask her to pay for it".

Btw, thinking that its mean to dock a cleaning woman's pay is NOT what makes you crazy. Your assumptions and characterizations and generalities with respect to other people who you know nothing about are what make you crazy

If you read my original post, there are no assumptions in it. Just that you a) have a cleaning person, and b) once owned an expensive bowl. You then responded very defensively to that and accused me of making generalizations. I simply meant if you are in the position to pay a cleaning person and own an expensive bowl, then you are in the position to let it go. For the record, no one who has reaponded agreed with your instinct to dock her pay. My tone was suggestive because quite frankly I was horrified that someone would even ask.

OP, If it were me I would let it go, but if it happened again I would not hire her to clean my house. And if that makes me a spoiled b!tch, then so be it.
