Did you hear on the news about people getting set up and robbed due to this though? I downloaded it but now I'm a little sketched out.

Re: Pokemon Go

Apparently the privacy settings for this are ridiculous and the company can collect a lot of data, such as access to your entire google account.

As with most stuff on the Internet, it's not true. The developer originally stated that he had "full access" to your Google account. However, "full" is a far stretch. Here's the info from Google:

http://gizmodo.com/can-pokemon-go-really-read-all-your-emails-1783479136

...
We recently discovered that the Pokémon GO account creation process on iOS erroneously requests full access permission for the user’s Google account. However, Pokémon GO only accesses basic Google profile information (specifically, your User ID and email address) and no other Google account information is or has been accessed or collected. Once we became aware of this error, we began working on a client-side fix to request permission for only basic Google profile information, in line with the data that we actually access. Google has verified that no other information has been received or accessed by Pokémon GO or Niantic. Google will soon reduce Pokémon GO’s permission to only the basic profile data that Pokémon GO needs, and users do not need to take any actions themselves.
...

Also, if you see anything about a major highway pile-up because a Pokemon Go player walked onto the road, that is also a fake story.
The robberies do appear to be true, though.

Certainly need to use common sense - I'm not wandering around in the middle of nowhere at night (nor am I wandering around people's backyards). We stay in public places (parks, shopping areas) and stay out of the street. Not sure why so many people aren't using their heads.

When I signed up, the app didn't ask for my Google log in info - just my email account and I created a new password to get into the app. So I don't see how they could access anything in my Google account. I know some people have it hooked up so you can buy stuff using your Google acct, but you don't have to give them access.

I have no desire to play this. But I don't have any games on my phone anyway.

Everyone is always complaining about people not paying attention when they're on their phones as is.
So lets add another distraction.

And the news just showed a picture that the police dept sent out of character on the edge of a subway platform.

I see this ending badly for a lot of people.

Just saw this article when I woke up this morning. Absolutely disgusting. WTF is wrong with people?!?! There have also been reports of playing Pokemon Go at Auschwitz.

Pokemon Go

I passed by a park on the way to dinner with DH last night and not one single person was looking up from their phone. It was really freaky. Just another way to turn people into zombies.

I've been trying to figure out how this technology idea/stack could be used in real life as an enhancement not a game.

Could make geocaching more fun and accessible. It's been around since about 2000, but it's a very niche audience.

Dating app/Meetup app? Wander around your neighborhood looking for people with similar traits?

Sightseeing app. Pokemon Go almost does that now, by having more Pokemon congregating near local attractions. Could be set up to encourage people to see different sites in a city.

This is what I think is cool about it. I have come across and learned about so many little landmarks I never knew of (including one right under my apt building) from the app. Things I've walked past 500 times and not noticed. I'm in a city so there are so many little sites you don't pay attention to. I'm not really too into the Pokemon aspect Chat Icon but this part I do enjoy.

Are there any other AG apps that do this (point out landmarks)? it seems like such a simple idea really.

Re: Pokemon Go

Gotta love Capitalism and American Ingenuity.

I've heard several stories of companies (including a small pizza place) that are spending a couple of dollars to get lures, and placing them at their stores. One guy said his sales increased 75% for the day, since everyone around came to his store for Pokemon... and some pizza... Chat Icon Chat Icon

Other, bigger establishments (McDonalds in Asia, and some museums) are getting Gyms and Pokestops set up at their place, so along with free wi-fi, they are getting a lot more foot traffic.

Re: Pokemon Go

OK, so I downloaded this. DH and I did a 60k bike ride around a local lake on the weekend and thought it would be fun to do with that.

We went out to our local beer garden tonight and that's a poke stop, so it was good to stock up there. We then rode around on our bikes and found some local areas that are popular and had some lures. Luckily, it is light until about 10 pm here in the summer, so that's good.

But the servers suuuuucccckkkk!

I'm only level 8, so I'm busy just collecting them all, but what do the gyms do? Like how do you PLAY this game?

omg my husband is obsessed. He goes out for a couple hours at night after the baby is in bed. The app says he's walked 86 km in 4 days, that's over 50 miles. I wonder if it's accurate. He does have a blister on his toe Chat Icon

Re: Pokemon Go

Admittedly, I haven't downloaded it or tried to play it BUT.....I don't get it. Do you "win" something? Like, who cares what you catch and what level you are at?

Plus a friend of mine almost ran over a teenaged girl who just walked into the middle of the street because she was staring at her phone.
