Excuses in the digital age

Yesterday my boss and I sat on a conference line for 15 minutes waiting for a freelancer we hired. The freelancer chose the date and arranged the call. My boss then emailed her. Later that afternoon, she emailed to say she was traveling home from vacation (we knew she was out of town) and her flight was delayed 12 hours. Is it fair to expect some kind of communication so we don't waste our time?

This was the second time she flaked- the first was when she missed her interview because she was expecting a confirmation of our confirmation of the date and time. Chat Icon

So is this the new norm for the workforce? Is it generational (she's young, mid 20s)?

She absolutely should have sent a message.

Did anyone ask why she didn't?

And this is her 2nd time doing something like this? There wouldn't be a chance for a 3rd. Sorry.

She definitely should have contacted you and your boss.

Sounds like her interview issue was indicative of how her work ethic is.

There is no reason not to contact you or your boss. That is just rude. I would not give her another chance.

Between email, text, voice, and other apps, and the ubiquity of cell phones, there is almost no reason why someone can't at least let you know that they can't make a meeting. This isn't 1970 and they couldn't find a dime for the pay phone...

She sounds like a flake. No reason for her not to be able to communicate at all.

Totally unprofessional. I would prob give her one more chance and that's it. And, I def don't think this is the new norm. It sounds like it's just the way she is.

I've been surprised that my boss is so forgiving. I would have said 'thanks but no thanks' had the decision been up to me. She didn't say why she didn't get in touch but if the podunk Westchester County Airport has cell service I would imagine bigger, busier airports would too.

This exactly.

My daughter's special Ed teacher was supposed to be here from 12:30-1:15. It's 1:25 and not even a call or text.

If it was once, I'd say okay, maybe something went rather awry.

However, twice screams flake to me.

She definitely should've called or emailed. I would terminate the business relationship if she does something like that again.
