What do you do when a coworker leaves?

We have a pretty close knit office and a coworker that has been here for about 10 years is leaving for a better opportunity. I was planning a little farewell for her and was wondering what other offices do?

My office is really big and we usually collect money and then go from there. Most times we collect enough to have a dessert party and give a gift card. I think it is way over the top and wish we just did cake and maybe a small gift.

The person normally gets about $150 amex gift card and a huge dessert display or even lunch.

nobody ever leaves my office but I have seen this done at others lol

We just do farewell drinks and most people go. We did it at my old company too.

at my fiances office they go out for drinks. the person leaving sends out an email to everyone in the dept and other ppl they are close to.

after his bridal shower ( that i went to ) last Friday, it was also someone's last day so we went to a karaoke bar for a little bit and the people who didnt take a summer friday, joined us at a gay bar afterwards. so.much. fun.

We either do a lunch time party or late afternoon party where people make and bring stuff. We usually give a small gift, nothing extravagant. Then people will usually also go out for drinks after work.

My office is big and as a whole doesn't do anything unless the person leaving is an executive, then there is a cocktail party in the office.
We peons usually go out to lunch, paying for the person leaving.

I left after 10 years. They threw me a catered lunch. And they all chipped in for a gift card.

Thanks for the replies. I did take up a collection and got about $250 but I wasn't exactly sure what to do with it. I think I will get a bunch of desserts (a cake, some fruit, etc) and give her a gift card for the rest.

Cake and card. If it were one of the managers, we'd probably do a happy hour (the management team is pretty close knit).

Years ago, when we were underlings, we had so much turnover that one of my coworkers wrote the whole " sorry to see you go, we will miss you!" in a card and found out 2 hours later that it was the person's birthday.

At my old place, if it was someone from our immediate group, we would take the person out to lunch and pay for them. Sometimes give a sentimental gift

If it was just a random coworker, cake and card in the conference room

My last company did nothing unless you were retiring....

Before that my co everyone brought in a food item

When my Co-worker left she was also employed for 10 years, we had a Best Wishes gathering, cake and a bunch of desserts so everyone can say their goodbyes. It was nice but I was a little disappointed because I think she deserved a luncheon, since she was there for so long and everyone loved her. My boss was so cheap. A bunch of us ended up taking her out for dinner and drinks and gave her some gifts.

I had someone actually write Happy Birthday in the We'll miss you card!

nothing usually, but a few months ago someone left they bought her favorite cake ( ice cream). She was her new job 1 month and came back to use l

past companies, took the person out for lunch, had cake etc

One place I was really good friends with my department. They sent me off with a briefcase and earrings. Last place I announced my quitting at a bad time, then they hired me back part time, and to leave, it was nothing.
Current place is announce departure and invite select few out for drinks.

3 of us recently left our old building for a new position & they had a really nice catered luncheon for us on our last day & everyone signed a card & gave us Starbucks gift cards. It was very sweet!!

When I left an office for a better opportunity, we did have a cake and get together but when the person organizing the party sent out the invite, she also requested that people send her a memory of me. At the party, she put all the notes into a pretty box and I was able to go through it and remember everyone's stories of me. I still have that box and it's been 10 years since I left
