Lots of chipmunks this year?

Anyone else noticing a very high number of chipmunks around this year? We live in a wooded area and always have them but it seems like we have way more than prior years now. Luckily I don't find them to be much of a bother but I almost feel like our yard is infested.

Lots of chipmunks this year?

Yes! I normally see one or two running around a couple of times a week but this year I think I have a whole colony of them. There are at least 5 to 6 running around my backyard daily. It's driving the dog nuts! lol.

Why are you trapping small animals? What do you do with them when you catch them?

We have a "have a heart trap". We trap them and transport them to a nature preserve a few miles from our house.

I've actually never seen a chipmunk where we live (south shore, Suffolk). I get excited when we go to the Bronx Zoo and see them running around, free, lol. They're so cute!

I guess you did not know but actually it is ILLEGAL to trap and relocate animals. It's illegal to trap random animals that run into your traps and happen to get caught. You need to stop doing this unless you want to get caught one day. Neighbors do watch and someone will see you one day if keep doing it. And an animal lover will not stand for this.

http://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/81531.html

FROM NYS DEC -

"Relocating an Animal
It is illegal for you to move or relocate an animal off your property. You cannot live trap an animal and release it in a park, on State land or anywhere other than on the property where it was captured. If you need a wild animal removed from your property, contact a Wildlife Control Operator. Relocating an animal can create problems for neighbors, can move diseases like rabies or ticks and can cause unnecessary stress to the animal, so this task must be handled by a licensed professional."

Aside from the illegal aspect, you do realize they can die before you discover them in the trap? That's part of the reason it is illegal. They can die from heat, dehydration, starvation, stress, etc. It is actually illegal to trap small animals and relocate them on another property. And what if by accident you trap someone's cat and it dies in your trap waiting for you to "release" it? Or if you trap an innocent animal just passing by, this is illegal!

Honestly, if you were a squirrel, chipmunk, rabbit, etc, how would you feel locked in a cage until someone hopefully found you? If you live somewhere these animals frequent, it's their home too and trapping them is very cruel. I live in a very wooded area, there is NO reason to trap animals. I moved here knowing they live here too. Even when they try to make a nest in my garage or my gutters (chipmunks have done this to us), I will would NEVER consider trapping them. That's wrong.

You stated you trap animals so nonchalantly. That's actually ILLEGAL and not something so nonchalant you know and education is a great thing. So now you KNOW it's illegal to trap and relocate. And it's illegal to set up traps just to catch random small animals just doing their thing passing by.

Or worse, they could die from dehydration, starvation, heat stroke, etc. Now that it's so hot out, they could die so easily.

It's one thing if they get in your home to use the have a heart trap and relocate outside to your yard, but to trap them OUTSIDE in their element just for passing by your trap, THAT IS WRONG and ILLEGAL to trap, and illegal to relocate. Please stop doing this to them.

Re: Lots of chipmunks this year?

To the OP…yes, seeing a lot more chipmunks than usual. One guy is making a nest in my gutter drain. He pops out whenever I walk out of my garage. He is adorable!

When we first moved into our house, very wooded area..our backyard backs a state preserve, dh called me when I was on the train home to say a chipmunk got into our house. I freaked out bc we have two cats! I made him get the cats in the bedrooms and close the door. When I got home it took a long time to find him and safely get him back outside. I would never dream of trapping him and moving him.

I didn't even know it was illegal, but of course it makes sense.

Aside from the whole legal thing, I could never dream of trapping an innocent animal in the outdoors and relocate them. They could die. You could be separating them from their mom or their babies.

I honestly don't even see the pint why you would even want to or think to do this?

I agree. It's part of living in a wooded area. Don't live there if you want all wildlife gone from around your home. You cannot just set up traps and see what you catch each day. ILLEGAL.
