sorry these guys are getting paid, its their job, the job they were hired for is installation guys..

That doesn't mean you can't show appreciation for 5 hrs of hard labor in hot weather

I think a cold drink and maybe lunch, this is their job. When you say appreciation you make it sound like they are doing it out the goodness of their hearts or volunteers.

They are neither, this is their job.

I don't care what people end up doing, I just don't believe the world needs to get tipped for everything, and for doing their job. Its not me responsibility to buy lunch either on top of paying thousands for a play set. .

I work extremely hard for my income and at my job everyday, I don't get tipped for doing what I am paid to do.

If people were asked should I tip my OB-GYN for helping me through a preg, people say hell no, they got paid by the insurance company???

I don't get it:)

We can agree to disagree then. Everyone works hard at their job. I have no idea what these guys get paid.

For me if you are outside in 90 degree weather putting together a swing set,I would like to buy you lunch after.

Fine if you do,fine if you don't

Re: Do I tip the guys installing a swing set?

To answer the OP, yes.

To respond to the general discussion about when to tip, I tend to use the following guidelines:

Are they non salaried/hourly/less likely to have benefits?

Did they do an exceptional job?

Did they work in poor conditions?

If all three are yeses, I tip with no hesitation.

2 out of 3 maybe - depends.

Otherwise no.

Yes I would. Just like others have mentioned it's as matter of appreciation. Yes they have a salary but I'm sure it's not near what other ppl usually get paid. Plus if I have money to buy things that cost thousands, giving a tip of $10 or $20 is not gonna break my bank account.

Even though I paid the swing set company an extra $200 for installation?

I would still say yes. It is unlikley that that money is not going to the guys who are doing the installation

No the installation fee does not go right in their pocket but they are getting paid a wage.

exactly this. its their job to do that I don't know why they would expect a tip. I don't get tip for doing my job.
tipping is out of control.

the only people I truly 100% believe in tipping is waiter, waitresses. I always generously tip them. and also nail and hair people as long as they are not the owner because all these people count on their tips for making money

But why tip waiters/waitresses? They are also doing their job. Based on your logic, no one should get a tip.

To the OP, we tipped the 2 guys that put ours together. I think $15 each.

I really dislike the "I work and don't get tipped" argument.

Service-based jobs/industries are ones in which tips are generally recommended or accepted. Or ones in which in the convenience of having someone else do the work for you (delivery, installation, convenience services). Why does it kill people to tip a couple bucks for the luxury of having someone else do the backbreaking 5 hour set up in the heat - if you don't want to tip, do it yourself.

Exactly.
The $20 is not going to make or break me.
But it might make their day.
So that's what I do

It was a couple of years ago but I believe we tipped 10 or 15 to each of the two guys that installed our set.

I think it depends- if it is one guy and it is his company and I am paying him the installation fee then i don't think i would tip. If it were a few guys working for a company then I would, probably $10 each and give them water.

For the record, I tipped them $20/each ($40 total).

But I just want to say that the statement above is absurd.
I PAID $200 to have it installed on top of the insane amount for the swing set. So I WAS paying to have someone do 5 hours set up in the heat.

I tipped because they did a great job...but I don't think that I HAD to do it.

I would never think twice about tipping someone in the service industry (bartender, waiter, bell hops, etc). I am a very generous tipper. This question was based on the fact that I was already paying $200 extra to have it built. The men who came work FOR the company I bought the set from. This is their living as salaried employees.

Again, it's moot because I DID tip them. But it's not like I wasn't paying for the service of having it built.

What I mean is - you paid for installation, they are not getting the $200 you paid for installation. They are probably not salaried employees, probably hourly employees. And in this instance of them providing you a service, I think the tip was appropriate.

We tipped - it was Christmas Eve (day) and 2 guys were at my house putting it up.
I think we gave them $50
