Does anyone here run their own in-home daycare?
I'm looking for some guidance. DH and I are tossing the idea around of finishing our basement and turning it into a fully functioning in-home daycare and getting licensed. My SIL, who has worked at 2 of the bigger chain daycares for about 8 years now, would come work with me as a lead teacher. She is MAT and CPR certified already. I would have to get certified as well.
I went on the NYS website with all the info for getting licensed and it's daunting. I dont even know where to start. I have so many questions for anyone who has BTDT. Off the top of my head, I'm curious, if your daycare is in your basement, do you need to have an egress or a walk out of some sort for emergency purposes? How many kids can you legally care for? How much does licensing AND insurance cost you annually? For that matter, what are some of the biggest costs associated with running your daycare aside from the insurance? Anything else you can share would be helpful.
Right now we're sort of spinning our wheels and deciding if this is the right move for us. We wouldnt be looking to open until after the new year, so we have time. But we're really concerned about the costs involved and what it takes to get licensed. Also if our space is going to work for a daycare. I know we would need to install a bathroom downstairs, have a separate room for napping, probably a kitchenette for preparing lunches and snacks. But I think there are a lot of requirements that I'm probably not thinking of.

For you to use your basement yes you would need 2 ways for egress so if all you have is one way you would need to add something.
On top of the state requirements you would also need to look into your local code/zoning.

Yes- you will need two means of egress.
I just went to a seminar that is mandatory for a group daycare (they assign you your application number here).
Anyway, you may need to attend one for your type of daycare.
I know that since you will be handling food, then you will need to take the 15 hour online course and pass the exam. Nothing difficult but anyone handling food will need to also take and pass the exam.
This will be extremely helpful...
