We never get invited to other people's homes

Our house is the entertainment house.

I just got a text from my cousin saying you guys should have a barbecue on Memorial Day, dh got the same text from his best friend. I'm like it would be nice if someone reciprocated and dh response was we always leave hungry.

My aunt always tells my dh we can't invite you over you cook too well. Dh and I love having people over but the expectation is a bit much.

When we nicely suggest dinner to friends and family they either suggest our house or some expensive restaurant so with a toddler we usually just have them over.

Dh bought up the last time we went to my cousins for lunch she ordered one pizza pie for 7 of us and we bought Cesar Salad. Who does that?!

It would be nice though to get invited out and not have to worry about anything for the day.

End vent.

This is me exactly. I love entertaining, I really do. But it would be so nice if someone invited us over for once. So I can just show up with dessert and not have to worry about spending hundreds to entertain a group of people.
The summer is coming which means people will expect a BBQ every weekend. And I'm not doing it. I can't afford to and I'm tired lol I'm having a big 4th of July party and that's about it.

While that's a great compliment and I'm sure you guys are great entertainers, that's really ballsy of people to outright expect your house.

If you feel pressured to have an event at your house, can you make it pot luck so its not all on you?

We make sure people bring something and most of my friends and relatives are pretty good about it. Christmas Eve is 40 people and potluck.

The summer is around the corner and as pp said we are expected to have barbecues. We dont have a pool do you would think that would deter people but nope. Most of.my friends and family have young kids and like our house because it's very child friendly and while it's a huge compliment sometimes it's a bit much.

I would just stop offering to host then. If no one ends up throwing anything then maybe they will get the hint to host something or nothing will happen. It's not fair to you to host everything.

Re: We never get invited to other people's homes

Omg this is exactly us. Granted we're the first ones in our group of friends to have our own place but now that everyone has caught up, it's like they're used to us hosting. I just started asking for people to bring stuff. LOL. It gets frikken expensive! & we tried to not host for a while but then I missed hanging out with everyone & if we don't initiate, no one else does. Now I just say .. hey, we're gonna grill. lmk what you're bringing!

This is us and then we see people and they are are all "we have to get together, it's been too long" I have a huge family and another cousin always tells me how happy she is that I bring everyone together.

I feel your pain. Chat Icon BIL will come to our house with his gf and two DD, bring NOTHING and literally eat a $30 shrimp cocktail app himself. We are never invited to their place. It's so frustrating!

Re: We never get invited to other people's homes

That is us to a T! We were the first of our friends with a house so we would host. Now there's just an expectation and it drives us nuts! We only have one friend (out of many) who has us over. DHs brother just blight a house so hopefully he'll take on some of the hosting responsibility.

Everyone should bring something when they're invited to someone's house and although it's not a rule, it's a way of saying thank u for inviting me. That's a personal rule for me, I'd never ever show up to a house with empty hands.

Also it's nice when ppl offer to help u clean up afterwards.

I sooooo agree and feel your pain. I have been told that our house is the "fun" house and while I love having people over, sometimes it would be nice to get out , dress up and "bring a cake". And yes, after a while it does get pricey. I have found in recent years people have become "cheap" and rude. And I dont mean cheap in the sense that you would need to bring out lobsters etc but it would be nice to return the 'favor' if you will.....

I feel your pain too. All parties/holidays are at either my house or my MIL. And even when its at my MIL's I always go early and help her cook, set the table, clean up etc.

No one else ever says "let's do X holiday at my house". It's not like they don't have the remove for all of us

Re: We never get invited to other people's homes

Although my one neighbor and I do invite each other to each others' homes, that is really the only one. Otherwise, I host most holidays and have several parties through out the year too. I like hosting and even with the cost - my one big complaint about not getting invited to others homes is that I never get to really enjoy the company. I'm always fetching drinks or food and cleaning up. I have friends want playdates but never invite us to their house - they want playdates at my house.

Same here. I will text someone play date? And they usually respond your house or park? Most times I don't mind this though because I never realize how non kid friendly others homes are. My cousin, before she had her dd had me bring my dd who was 1.5 at at the time to test out the kid friendliness factor. She failed miserably and is still one of the ones who always suggests my house.

Re: We never get invited to other people's homes

In my circle of family and friends, the older generation still hosts certain holidays, but I am the only one hosting get togethers or holidays or events. The only time I am invited to someone elses is maybe an occasional kids birthday party or a wedding! I feel like if I want to be with people for a weekend night or say the superbowl, I have to always host myself. I see this is a trend from the other responses. But for alot of you, complaining that you don't like when other people hosts because of their houses or the lack of food they provide, than why do you want them to continue hosting? If I ever had a friend host who I know provides bad or little food, I always just bring a bunch of stuff for them. I hate that I still have to do a lot of work but beats doing everything myself and cleaning the house - twice (before and after) lol. I just get mad when people come to my house, bring nothing, and never reciprocate.

slowly or just stop holding all the parties at your home. When somone says something say, I know I hold great parties, but your a great cook as well, so the next gathering is on you.

OR, next time you hold a gathering say, I am collecting $20 a person or couple or something to cover the cost of food, drink and waitstaff, then if you host you order in and get a waiter

People like to say to me, oh you bake it or you cook that because your're so good at or You're great hostess those kinds of things just stress me.

I just say, well I would like to attend a party so I can enjoy the day.

Move juuuuuust far enough away. We're the only ones on LI and no one wants to come here.

Though, my SIL makes backhanded comments about never being invited over. Mind you, she has never hosted a holiday and doesn't cook so the 2 times we've been there they ordered takeout and we were expected to pay for our food.
