Should polygamy be legal?
At various times in history, polyamory (multiple wives for one man, multiple husbands for one woman, or a group marriage, with multiples of both genders) has been legal, and accepted. Now that marriage has been legally defined as a union between any two consenting adults, should that be expanded to any number of consenting adults? Similar to a business contract, where any number of people can be in the contract.
I personally think that as long as all parties are of legal age of consent, and all parties are aware and consent to any changes in the partnership, I don't see an issue. The courts would have a huge burden, however, in trying to figure out divorce, visitation rights, inheritance, etc, etc.... Two people are much simpler...

Re: Should polygamy be legal?
I believe that it should be legal. I can't understand why it isn't. As long as the adults are consenting I don't see the problem. I do think that they would have to put limits on how many spouses could be added to things like health insurance benefits and social security benefits, but other than those things I don't see any issues with it.

I only find it an issue when we talk about the cults where they have multiple wives and some are underage.
If you want to deal with multiple wives/husbands more power to you. My one is plenty for me.

Re: Should polygamy be legal?
Hmm this is an interesting question. I personally don't have an issue with it as long as all parties involved are of legal age and are consenting. However, I wonder how the courts would figure out custody agreements when there are children involved. That's my only concern with this being legalized. How damaging would it be for children?

Re: Should polygamy be legal?
Call me nuts but I find polygamy to be a bit of a selfish undertaking and I feel like if you want to be with a bunch of different people, then just don't get married. IMO, marriage is a commitment between TWO people, not 3,4,5, or more. So no, I don't think it should be legal. I think we should respect the union of marriage as it is and if being with only one person your whole life is not fulfilling enough for you, just stay "single". JMHO.
And from a purely practical standpoint it makes the business of health insurance, divorce, finances, etc. so much more complicated.

For many polygamist it is a deep rooted religious belief to have multiple wives. I don't think it's just that they decide they want to be with a bunch of different people because they aren't satisfied by just one.

Yes.
If you want 2+ spouses, then more power to you. It sounds like a major headache to me! One is more than enough for me.

Re: Should polygamy be legal?
Yes, like the majority has said, provided everyone is of legal age and consenting.
I don't know why you'd want more than one spouse but hey.. if that's what you want, go for it.
Overall I think legislating this kind of personal business is overstepping on the government's part. The government should not care who I have sex with or who I want to create my family with so long as all parties are consenting adults.

I'm sure for some it is but I think there are probably many people who just think it would be fun and their desire has no basis in religion. Either way, not my thing.

Re: Should polygamy be legal?
Polygamy = more than 1 spouse Polygyny = 1 male marries more than 1 female Polyandry = 1 female marries more than 1 male
Historically and culturally there were benefits to the 2nd two just like living in an extended family had its benefits
As long as no one is taken advantage of I say let people do what they want
Logistically in our country based on financial gains etc I think it could be difficult

Yes......Who's to say otherwise. Why should it matter to me what other people do in their relationship.

I think what is being assumed here is that the people in polygamist relationships are not committed, rather they are in it for the fun of having multiple partners. And maybe some people are, but they would just be in a polyamorous relationship if that was the case. A polygamist marriage is consensual, committed, and should be viewed the same as any other marriage. I don't think anyone has a right to dictate who or what is acceptable when it doesn't concern them.

Re: Should polygamy be legal?
Seems messy from a financial standpoint. How do you divvy land, assets, etc upon separation. Let alone any kids involved.
It would really need to be thought out. I don't think we could just haphazardly say "yeah, let's legalize it" without having some ground rules in place.
For me personally, I enjoy monogamy, but I'm not the rule maker.

If you mean polygamy as it's portrayed on Sisterwives or Big Love, then yes 100%.
In reality, families like this are rare. Most polygamists live on isolated compounds where abuse is rampant. Underage brides, neglected children. They also abuse government funds- all are on welfare because they're all "single mothers." They're as corrupt as the day is long.

Personally I think its gross as I don't like to share. I also give them credit because cleaning up after one guy is more than enough for me.

Not as rare as you think. My friend is involved in multi people relationships and there is a whole community of them. She is in St. Louis so definitely not in an isolated compound.
If they are consenting adults then more power to to them. Not for me but I have no issue with it.

No. It reminds me too much of China (concubines and many wives) and India. The conditions for women in those countries are deplorable.
