Property-tax related.... Can they do this?

Brace yourselves for a long and confusing story. I'll try make this short:
I do all of moms paperwork and taxes etc. a friend of the family says he grieves his property taxes online himself through the AROW system. He guided me on how to do it, so I did. Really excited to see what happens!
Mom sometimes has a bad habit of asking too many opinions. She is newly widowed, So I can understand why.

We got a letter a few weeks ago saying that there were two requests for tax grievances made by mom. One through the county directly, the other by one of those companies that helps you grieve and takes half-ok. It asked us to withdraw one application to proceed with the request.
We aren't 100% sure who did it, but it has to be one of us 3 siblings. No big deal, I want to withdraw the one filed by the company, so I call them and explain the situation. Since an agreement was signed, there is a 100$ fee. Not possible to pay this, so I go on to explain that she never signed anything and it can't really be legal. All I asked for was the IP address of where the request came from. If it as one of us, we will just write it off for this year and move on.

This woman went OFFFFF on me saying, ok then "if you're saying that there is fraud, I will call hotmail and her cell phone company and report the fraud and have her email address shut down and her phone shut off"
I felt like I was in the twilight zone
Chat Icon Um, all I am asking for is an IP address so I can figure out who or what....

Does anyone know if this is true? Im not crazy, right? They can't get mom's hotmail account shud down, right? Iwas thinking of filing a complaint against them because she was really threatening on the phone. She was insinuating that I was accusing them of fraud!Chat Icon

That's insane. What power does she have to ge your moms email shut down. No way. Psycho.

I would absolutely file a complaint against them. Maybe even call back and get the conversation recorded this time

I don't think they can do anything but I have to say if someone called me looking for a. IP address I would think it was a little over the top. Obviously I don't know what you said to her and how it was said but she probably gets calls like yours often and was just reacting to it.

I am not sure what you are going to do with an IP address. Even if they give you one you are not going to be able to match it up anywhere. You said you were going to pay the $100 if it matches. Even if it didn't match Cablevision and Fios change IPs frequently enough where you wouldn't be able to guarantee that it wasn't them even if it was changed. Neither of those companies will be able to tell you any of the previous IPs without a subpoena. And if the application was filled out using a mobile device, forget that.

I am not surprised the company will be a little set off and I would pay the $100 since it was filed.

Wouldn't it be easier to just ask your siblings if one of them grieved your mom's taxes using that service ?

Re: Property-tax related.... Can they do this?

Her reaction is very strange. It's pretty much standard procedure to collect the IP from ANY form that was filled out online, let alone something that is meant to serve as a legal document. It should be fairly easy for them to give it to you. Tell her good luck getting the phone and email address shut off lol... that would never happen.

As for getting the IP address, depending on the ISP, chances are the IP address is still the same. I know optimum hardly ever changes their IPs. If the IP has changed, the best you can do is narrow it down by town so if your siblings live in the same town, that's not going to be helpful. I'm not sure how often verizon changes their IPs, but they use IPv6 now and the location isn't anywhere near accurate.

All things considered, this company didn't just randomly pick your moms house. Someone must have filled it out. I would pay the $100 since they did start the application.

In order to file a grievance, the company must have two things:

1. A signed retainer agreement; and
2. A signed authorization form.

These are two separate documents. Ask to see copies of both of them before paying them the $100.

I agree, these documents should provide you with the information you need. You'll probably have better success if your mom sends a letter requesting copies of these agreements.

Property-tax related.... Can they do this?

Let me clarify: I withdrew the request for the free DIY grievance. I intended to remain with this company's services to prevent paying the $100 fee. Someone filed the request for mom... Maybe my sister, my brother, cousin? Not sure, no one remembers the co. Specifically, but so many people were trying to help etc...
. They sent the "signed" agreement with the electronic signature. Still not sure who did it. It's not really fraud if mom is getting a tax break. Just more curious than anything.
I called to ask about the IP address to see who did it, only to receive the response I mentioned in my original post.

Generally you will have to pay the tax service half of what they save you. If the taxes were never greived you could owe a large amount. I have always had to sign a contract and couldn't submit online.

This. Might be cheaper to pay the $100 and be done with them.
