Spinoff-relocating to a different state and meeting people
I've moved to many states since getting married in 2004 (Atlanta, Seattle, Durham NC, and now LI). I'm introverted so it's hard for me to make friends. The easiest way is to find your "community" - find an activity that you enjoy and meet the people there. When we were in Atlanta and Seattle - we were heavily into swing dancing (I know dorky, but it's amazingly fun!). We had large groups of friends through that scene. When we moved to NC, I had DS and met moms that all had babies at the same time. LI is really the only place I've had trouble meeting people.
An easy way for people to find community is through church, but that isn't an option for us b/c we're not religious. So - think of things that you enjoy and go from there!
I will say that in addition to community - if you're used to being around family a lot (like most people on LI), moving away from them can be really difficult. You have no one to fall back on for easy babysitting, weekly meals, and holidays.

Re: Spinoff-relocating to a different state and meeting people
When my ExH and I moved to Georgia and NC I remember being terrified of not being able to meet people. I'm not naturally outgoing so I knew it would be out of my comfort zone. We mostly met people through ExH's job, but another great way to meet people is to see if there is a local FB group for mommies - I know our current town has one and it's a great resource. Lots of local moms do meet ups through it. Also, when we moved to our current town, DH joined the volunteer firehouse and we've met a lot of people that way. It's like a community and the wives become close and the husbands are together a lot. It's another really great way to meet people.

Spinoff-relocating to a different state and meeting people
I have joined a few meet up groups - fitness and mom related. It gets me out of the house, but at this point I would not consider most of these people my friends.
I have also become close with several people that I work with.

Re: Spinoff-relocating to a different state and meeting people
Honestly, some places are easier than others. In DC I made friends easily because we were in our Late 20's etc and it was easier. We lived in the Midwest for a couple of years and it was really hard. I was very lonely and didn't really make any friends because everyone kind of grew up in the area and had a ready made group of friends. So that sucked.
When we moved to LI, it took a little bit but once the kids were in preschool I met a lot of great people. It helps that my town is full of transplants from other areas so everyone seemed to be looking for friends.

Spinoff-relocating to a different state and meeting people
Honestly, Ive met people through my daughter and activities with her. Ive met people at soccor, school mostly, gymnastics... Ive also met people from walking around on my block with her and playing outside with her, we became friendly with neighbors.
Im mostly a loner so moving and not knowing anyone didnt scare me. I dont mind and actually prefer to be alone. But I found it easier than I anticipated to meet people.

Re: Spinoff-relocating to a different state and meeting people
I think it would be easier to meet people through your children (activities, mommy & me, school etc). Dh and I are relocating in 3 months, and this is one of my biggest reservations, because we don't have children and I'm not sure how we'll make friends.

I actually don't think I've made my best friends through my son. We seem to be older than most parents that have kids the same age, and people are definitely nice, but not friends we hang out with.
Find activities you like - dancing, church, volunteering, and meet people that way.
