Saving $$$ during VZ Strike (No Drama or Optinions on the Strike in this thread please)

When I was trying to get out of debt I took a long hard look at all my expenses.

I cut cable down to basic
I looked at my cell bill
I stopped all the extras: mani/pedi, eating out.
I planned meAls and ate leftovers
I called credit cards to reduce intrest

Aldi is great for groceries...I can walk out of there with an overflowing cart and have spent peanuts compared to other supermarkets. It's especially great for pantry staples (rice, cereal, beans, cans of crushed tomatoes, etc)

Things my mom did when $$ was extra tight:

Food:

Breakfast for dinner a couple times a week (usually pancakes from scratch)
Other nights pasta inspired foods - macaroni and peas, squash or beans.
Casseroles made w leftovers (chicken, stuffing , etc)

Household:

Everything was store brand.
Cut cable

We cut out anything that wasn't a necessity. Dinners out, movies, etc. now that the nice weather is here, there are plenty of things to do outside that don't cost $$$

I hope the strike is over soon

I just went to an extreme couponing seminar over the weekend and the amount of money you could save is mind-blowing. They estimate if you coupon 3-4 hours a week, you could end up saving half of your monthly grocery expenses.

Start to use coupons! I used to spend close to $250 a wk on groceries and household/personal care items. Now I spend that a month. Stop n shop and shoprite double coupons. Cvs also has great deals where u can get things for free with coupons and extra care bucks.

Re: Saving $$$ during VZ Strike (No Drama or Optinions on the Strike in this thread please)

I lost my job last year so I am in same boat

-changed cell phones to boost mobile $30/month unlimited
-meal plan- shop at ALDI for most things. This has cut my grocery bill in half I spend about $80 a week at aldi and I get my cold cuts at the regular grocery store I spend about $100 week for a family of 4
-Amazon prime: "subscribe and save" if you have at least 5 items on delivery monthly you get 15% off and then another 5% off with the amazon credit card. I get my diapers, wipes, snacks, cleaning supplies and it ends up cheaper than what I would pay even at bjs or for store brand things
-cut cable if you can(we have a contract with DirecTV through October) get Internet and a streaming device like a roku. There's N app called slingtv its $20/month and you get channels like HGTV, TNT, tbs etc. Downside no pause/rewind DVR etc but the savings would be very good from just doing that
-use only cash anf try your best to budget and put away $$ into savings if you can
-call about homeowners and car insurance to see if you can get better rates. My car insurance waives the installment fee if you have the payment automatically debited from your account
- I wouldn't reccomnd this but we had to stop on rretirement contributions??
