I think it's disgusting that laws like this are passing and I'm glad the entertainment industry is pushing back and hitting them where it hurts - in the pocketbook.

YES!

I live in NC, and I am not surprised at all that this law passed. Most people down here seem to LOVE it. Personally, I think McCrory is god awful, and I hope this continues to blow up in his face until he has to repeal it with his tail between his legs.

I just went off on this on Facebook last night after I saw a thread on a political page. I could not believe the violence and hate that people were spewing. It actually made me sick to my stomach. I started to get into it with some of the posters from that thread but walked away after I realized that I wasn't going to change that deep rooted bigotry over a FB feed.
It is scary though, the thoughts people have. They can't separate sexual predators from Transgendered people and somehow forget about all the pervy straight people that have been using bathrooms for their depraved behavior forever.

Just wait - McCrory is going to be outed soon as having a Tinder account to pick up transgendered females. It's always these politicians that fight the hardest for laws like this, even though they partake in secret.

First federal law already covers this issue, so it will not hold up in federal court. Second how are they enforcing this? Making people show someone their birth certificate before entering a rest room?

Surprised I haven't seen this discussed yet - Transgender bathroom bans

There's no way that this law will stand. it was passed in the middle of the night in order to counter a bill passed by NC state legislature on a measure to protect LGBT citizens. Basically, federal law takes precedence.
Also, the bullcrap spewed by people on FB and message boards and in response to news articles on the topic is outrageous. So many people are clueless and say the dumbest things...

There's an image I saw - it said "I feel safer in the bathroom with transgender folk than I do with GOP congressmen." Haha

Surprised I haven't seen this discussed yet - Transgender bathroom bans

I just had the most confusing conversation with my mom about this. She's pretty conservative so when I mentioned that we are hesitant about moving back to the South bc of these laws, she started going off about perverts. I broke it down into small pieces - saying if I was born a male, but in my teens I identified as female, and now in my 40s I look, behave, and act like a female. The laws are saying that bc my birth certificate says I'm male that I would have to use the men's room. She agreed that it was wrong.

Then I asked her where the laws are to protect kids male pedophiles that go into the men's room. She said they're just perverts. I agreed and said but there's no law that can be passed to keep them out of the bathroom. And the laws that are being passed are crazy b/c transgendered people aren't perverts - and she agreed.

Then she WENT OFF on Obama about how horrible he is for stepping in and passing crazy laws taking federal money away from these states. I told her I was confused - she agreed with me that these laws aren't really stopping the perverts from reaching kids. So I said, then isn't it a good thing that he's trying to stop the states from harassing transgendered people? And then she started saying again how horrible Obama is.

Sheesh - she needs to stop listening to the Republican party line! She can't even think straight when it comes to people's rights - just spouts their nonsense when it clearly doesn't fall into what she believes.

A long time ago, I also caught her in another similar situation. We were talking about abortion, and once I broke it down into smaller parts I got her to admit that a woman should have the right to do whatever she wants with her body. And I said, Oh so you're pro-choice? And she back pedaled FAST bc she didn't agree with pro-choice (even though that's what it means). It's just these buzz words that are looked at as being vile that are constantly spouted by their mouth pieces.

If a man wants to attack a woman or girl in a rest room, he won't bother to pretend to be transgender. He'll just do it. I couldn't find an article but I remember a young girl being raped in a movie theater bathroom in NJ or Rockland county. He just walked right in. And that's why my kid does not go into public bathrooms alone- not because a trans woman might be in there.

Since there previously was no law anywhere preventing them from using any bathroom, where do you think they've been going all these years? They've been in their appropriate bathroom and people had no idea. I have yet to hear one story of a child attacked by a transgendered person in a restroom, but I have heard MANY of a person of their assigned sex attack a child of the same sex in a restroom.

This whole thing is shameful and ignorant.

I could not care less what bathroom anyone uses, transgender or not. Bathrooms could be unisex for all I care, I'm in the stall by myself regardless so nobody's infringing on my privacy or vice versa. I think the whole thing is silly. I've used the men's bathroom on occasion when necessary, is that not allowed? I never gave it much thought.

I agree with this. However, I can see why some parents may not be happy about the "locker room" situation at schools if their children (girls or boys) feel uncomfortable changing in front of someone of the opposite sex (physically). I don't think it has to do with thinking anyone is a predator, it will just take some time for it to become the norm.

But what makes a child feel uncomfortable changing in front of someone who is physically of the opposite sex? I'm not sure I understand this fully.

Am I missing something? I would not want to be in a locker room with a male nor would I want my DD in a locker room with a male. It's okay to have separate facilities for men and women, we are different people and I don't see why a locker room (of all places) should ever have to be unisex. No thanks. I would find that very uncomfortable even now as a 41 yr old woman.

As for the bathroom thing, I'm sure I've been in a bathroom with someone who is transgender and never noticed. I wouldn't bat an eye being in a bathroom with someone who looks like, acts like, and dresses like a woman..............even if they were born male. How would you even know what someone is unless you're doing a genital check at th door??! lol. All that being said, I really wouldn't want a man who looks like a man in the bathroom with me though. I would just feel uncomfortable. Call me crazy but I don't see why having separate bathrooms is all of sudden considered crazy. <shrug>

ITA. I don't get this argument at all, if someone wants to do something bad, they'll just do it. I actually hate being alone in bathrooms or in bathrooms that are in the middle of nowhere in a store, makes me so nervous. I too would never let my DD in a public bathroom alone, especially at this age........she's only 7.

Re: Surprised I haven't seen this discussed yet - Transgender bathroom bans

So here is my take on one of the arguments against it.
They are saying that a guy ca nown go into a ladies room under the guise of being transgender or identifying as a woman etc- and then rape or assault a woman.

But here's the thing- He can do that now!

Nobody stops you from going into the bathroom at Target or the movies or a restaurant. There are no guards saying- No men allowed in the Ladies room!
Nobody even looks in the direction of the bathrooms and notices who is going where.

So if a man really does have bad intentions and is a sicko, the sign on the door or some unspoken rule isn't going to stop him from entering a ladies room and doing harm to a woman if he really wants to.

At any time, a man can walk in any ladies room and go in a stall and do his business if he really wants to.
Or do something shady.

So I don't get that argument at all

That argument makes ZERO sense.
