Why would anyone ever want to register as an independent? That's such a waste since it disqualified you from primary voting. Register either republican or democrat even if you don't find yourself leaning in that party direction.

This way you can either vote for the guy in the primary you like or you can vote against somebody you don't like to try to block their nomination.

Well I'm registered under no party, so I can't vote in the primaries either. I have my reasons. Thank God it's a free country and we can choose to register how we want, even if it's Democrat, Independent, Green, Libertarian, Constitution, or no party at all.

Would love to hear a reason cause I couldn't think of one. I registered democrat even though I'm republican with the sole intent on potentially blocking a candidate from getting a nomination.

Never really had to do this in the past but this year I am going to vote Hillary to block communist Bernie from getting the nomination. Bernie as president would be absolutely horrific and since NY will go blue regardless of who's running this is my way of making my vote finally "count".

Well, voting isn't compulsory in the US. Perhaps someone doesn't want to vote because they are not up on current events.

In countries where it is compulsory, a lot of people tend to "throw away" their votes.

Now, I'm not saying that the OP in this quote is not up on current events, but the OP has their reasons. Perhaps, they want more of a parliamentary system. Who knows? But there is a reason.

Blocking can do more harm than good, really.

And since when is Bernie a communist? Communism and Socialism are different.

I'm a registered Republican and I'm still somewhat torn on who I plan to vote for. But I'm shocked at the poll responses so far. Not shocked in a good OR bad way per say, just very surprised that considering what a blue state NY usually is, and we have always had a large population of dems on this site, there are a lot of people voting for Trump. I didn't expect to see that at all.

I registered as an independent as at 18 years old, I had no clue about parties or which one I would want to be in (to tell you the truth, I am still clueless with these clowns lol).
I didn't care about primaries at that age and this is the first year I would want to vote but can not.

Bernie Sanders. I'm so excited to finally be able to vote for a candidate who I am behind 100%!

I know LI is largely republican, but I am really shocked at how many people on here are supporting Trump. Especially since this site is 99% women.

I don't want to identify as something that I am not. I am not entirely Democratic or Republican, so I don't want to label myself as one. The right to make that choice exists, and that's the one I made.

I'm not sure how any woman can vote for Trump, but different strokes for different folks I guess. I feel like this is the first race where I literally am not really wanting any of the candidates, just trying to vote for the lesser of the evil. Chat Icon

Wow, didn't know you had to be registered to a party to vote on a party. Here (Texas) they don't care. If you are a registered voter, your vote counts. You could only vote for one party though so you had to choose there, but it didn't mean you were committing to that party from then on.

I am unaffiliated to any party and I voted for Sanders.

ETA: I know someone who's registered Republican but voted for Clinton because she was afraid of Trump. LOL They really don't care what your card says. You vote as you please. You just can only vote for one party.

NY is not an Open Vote state like Texas must be. If you register in a party, you have to vote in that party.

Maybe because people (women or men) who make a decent living realize how much their taxes will SKYROCKET under Sanders.

I don't know how anybody can vote for Sanders knowing this. It's insane.

If this article is correct then its completely ridiculous. Who has an extra 10-20k to pay in taxes? How is that a popular stance?

How about instead we better utilize the taxes that are already collected instead of allowing them to be pissed away to special interests with zero accountability!

Yes, I understand that. I don't know, but maybe I have her confused with another poster, but IIRC, she's been pretty pro-Trump for a while now. I would have thought she would have changed parties to vote for him.

I understand being registered as an independent, but I don't really understand supporting a candidate for so long and then being registered to another party and then not being able to vote for them-- especially in this election.

Mainly because everyone who has heard any candidate make promises over the last several decades realizes, there are "campaign promises" and there is reality. Sanders cannot possibly raise taxes that much, Trump can't possibly build the wall and have Mexico pay for it. Ted Cruz cannot abolish the IRS by 2019. Clinton cannot end anti-LGBT discrimination completely "at home and abroad."
Trump has made promises to increase spending in a lot of areas, rebuilding bridges and infrastructure, policing Muslim neighborhoods, deporting 11 million Mexicans, increase the military, and do all of that while magically cutting taxes tremendously. Math much, Donald?....

I take everything that every politician says with a grain of salt. Almost none of the big plans that are promised during their campaign ever get implemented. Congress and the public are able to check-and-balance (or outright stop) a lot of activity. I look at what direction the candidate is pointing when they aim for the stars.

From my point of view, Sanders is aiming at helping the Middle Class and below. Trump is aiming at helping himself, and his rich cronies, at the expense of the rest of the country. Neither one will get to their goal, but they will try and make tiny steps in that direction.

The candidates just have their talking points to rile up their base and polarize the voters.
