Gel manicure
So I am low maintenance in that I don't dye my hair or get my nails done often.
DD convinced me to get a gel manicure (no tips just the polish and UV light). The salon said it lasts for 2 weeks. I cook and wash dishes daily and manicures don't last more than a day for me. She said I can do dishes with this type of manicure. Well it started chipping on day 3-4 and by 5 one totally peeled off.
One reason I don't do manicures is I have no time. If I had time I would have gone to the salon and complained as soon as I saw a chip.
I will probably go today to just take it off (was told you need special remover?).
Would you expect the salon to compensate somehow? It was $25. DD said we went to a bad salon. How long do yours last before first chip?

Re: Gel manicure
Mine usually are good for at least 2 weeks and then I have to take it off not because of chips but due to grow out. It sounds like they didn't do something right somewhere in the process. Not sure you will get much compensation from them to be honest. If you feel like going back though, it's worth a shot.
If you want to remove it yourself at home you need to buy pure acetone nail polish remover (not the plain regular kind- it has to say 100% acetone) Target has their own brand of it. Then soak cotton balls in it and place on your nails- cover with foil. Leave that on for about 15-20 min and the polish should start to rub right off- if not scrape off gently with an orange stick.
Make sure to moisturize the heck out of your nails and cuticles afterwards as the acetone is very drying

Re: Gel manicure
That's why I do acrylic because regular manicures, shellac and gel all look like crap within a few days.
I'd ask them to fix it at a minimum.

Re: Gel manicure
Everyone I know who does gel; can go three weeks + with no chip. (Unless of course a nail breaks).
So I am very surprised yours chipped so soon. I would mention it.

Gel manicure
The place I recently started going to - the gel manicure last until I have to have it take off because of growth, not because of chips. I have had a french manicure for 3 weeks and not one chip

I've gotten a few done recently and only found once place where they don't start peeling off in a week. I think it's a bad place.
The "good" place that I go to told me to come back if I had any problems and they will fix it.

Re: Gel manicure
I've had that happen. But at my regular place, I can make it almost 3 weeks. I get a nude color so the regrowth isn't too noticeable. I'd definitely go back and complain.
ETA: that's how I justify paying so much more for it. I look at it like weekly manicures would be $10 so this is triple that but you only have to go every 3 weeks.

My gel mani lasts for weeks. I have been doing it for years. It should not (and by definition) not chip. Chipping means it breaks off down to your nail. This stuff is baked on.
MAYE you got shellac and not Gel? If this was an initial gen mani it would have cost you $80.

Re: Gel manicure
I have found that nail salons tend to use generic type base coat and top coats and they don't work as well.
When I get Shellac at nail lady who works privately out of her house with actual Shellac brand products last weeks and never chips.

Re: Gel manicure
i've been going regularly for them for over a year now.
MOST times I can go 2 weeks but the grow out is usually a lot. I have had times where it has chipped or started to lift in a few days and sometimes make it a point to go back there to have them fix it.
i think it varies by brand of gel polish. some are better than others.
if you're hands are in water a lot i feel like that shortens the life. I tend to use rubber gloves when doing dishes for the sake of my hands. but Im always washing them at work, and showering DS, etc.

Re: Gel manicure
Mine usually last 2-3 weeks, but once in a while I have one that chips in a couple of days. Usually my nails underneath weren't fully buffed so they peel or something.
Also, you can remove it at home and save the $5. You just need foil, cotton balls, 100% acetone and an orange stick.
If you go back to have it taken off, you should at least get it taken off for free b/c it didn't last, but who knows if they'll accommodate you.

Gel manicure
I alternate between regular polish & gel, but the gel last well over 2 weeks. They don'tr chip, but of course there is grow out and my nails tend to grow fast anyway. Sounds like either bad product or application. You can see if they will re do it for you, but I doubt they will refund you. But I never let my hands touch water without gloves!

$80?! Are you sure that's for just a gel manicure and not for tips or something? The highest ive seen is $25

Gel manicure
Mine usually last about 3 weeks at least. However, the past two times they have been peeling off within a few days so I'm going to ask next time I go in if they recently switched to a different brand or something. But normally I'm very happy with them.

I am thinking it's tips because she said "initial" gel manicure. I never heard of an initial gel mani vs a follow up. I heard of fill ins though when you get the tips done. With the gel/shellac mani we are talking about it's a one shot deal.

I get shellac and it easily lasts 2-3 weeks.
ETA I doubt you will get any compensation. You could maybe ask them to fix it but honestly if they did a crappy job the first time they'd probably do a crappy job again. I probably just wouldn't go back.

Gel manicure
I think some nails just repel gel. I've had 2 gel manicures in my life, from 2 different salons. One had my nails peeling within 3-4 days. The other my nails started peeling in less than 24 hours. Never again.

Yeah I agree with you. The first time I got a gel manicure was exactly like every other time. Mine last about a week and a half. I find the glitter ones chip off quicker.

Thanks ladies. They redid them for free. It is a "gel color" using the Shellac polish.
Let's see how long it lasts this time...

The only issue I ever had was once, the day before SS Sandy. They peeled within a day and I had nothing to do but pick at my banged up French manicure :(
