Supreme Court nominee announcement

Pres. Obama is set to announce a nominee to the Supreme Court this morning. It is said to be moderate Court of Appeals Judge Merrick Garland. It goes beyond my comprehension that almost immediately after Scalia passed away Republicans began stating that they wouldn't even consider holding hearings for ANYONE nominated by Obama. We have laws in place for a reason and Congress should be pretty well informed as to what the laws are and why they are in place, I would think. I hope they at least give this guy a real chance. (Or, like a meme I saw on FB, when Hillary gets into office she can nominate Obama to the Court Chat Icon !)

I wonder if this will go through or if he is the sacrificial lamb. I was hoping for Sri Srinivasan.

Smart choice. Now the GOP will look even more like shmucks if they won't consider him.

I think it's sort of both, he's the lamb and he's not. In that - both outcomes were considered when choosing him. If he doesn't get approved then there's the hope that the next President is a Democrat, that the GoP looks bad for not approving, and the next nominee can be more liberal. But if he DOES get approved, he's a choice that Democrats can be at least somewhat comfortable with.

I think more so he's the lamb, but the other option is okay too.

I was also hoping/expecting it to be Sri Srinivasan but Merrick Garland seems good too.

I am guessing the Republicans will stall this until November and then approve him if Hillary wins the general but before she takes office. I also heard that the Dems are putting pressure on certain members of congress who are up for re-election based on their refusal to vote on the SCOTUS nominee and are hoping to leverage that to take over additional congressional seats. No dull moment in politics right now

Honestly, the Republicans position has me scratching my head. I think the voting public has loudly voiced their disgust at the political gamesmanship that is going on in Washington (i.e. filibusters, etc.) and this is gamesmanship at it best.

Right. And seeing that disgust and continuing their course is like an additional "FU" to the american people.

Can they care any less about the people they are supposed to represent?

This doesn't make sense to me. I mean, it looks like Trump will be the nominee right? Do they actually think he can win the presidency? Or do they plan on stalling for the next 5 years? At some point they're going to have to suck it up and agree to someone...

There is talk that there may be a contested Republican convention.

Cruz said this:
“Merrick Garland is exactly the type of Supreme Court nominee you get when you make deals in Washington D.C. A so-called ‘moderate’ Democrat nominee is precisely the kind of deal that Donald Trump has told us he would make – someone who would rule along with other liberals on the bench like Justices Ginsburg and Sotomayor. Make no mistake, if Garland were confirmed, he would side predictably with President Obama on critical issues such as undermining the Second Amendment, legalizing partial-birth abortion, and propping up overreaching bureaucratic agencies like the EPA and the IRS. We cannot afford to lose the Supreme Court for generations to come by nominating or confirming someone that a dealmaker like Donald Trump would support. Washington dealmakers cannot be trusted with such crucial lifetime appointments.

“I proudly stand with my Republican colleagues in our shared belief – our advice and consent – that we should not vote on any nominee until the next president is sworn into office. The People will decide. I commend Mitch McConnell and Chuck Grassley for holding the line and ensuring that We the People get to exercise our authority to decide the direction of the Supreme Court and the Bill of Rights.”
___________

I think they still think Trump will not win the nomination. I heard somewhere that in 1880 there was a contested convention, and that's how Garfield got in. He wasn't even on the ticket and then they nominated him.

I mean today Boehner endorsed Paul Ryan- WTAF?

I'm thinking if it goes to a contested convention the delegates may just vote in someone else. People will be unhappy about this. I mean I know I would if I voted for a candidate and this happened. If that happens, I think the Republican Party is going to split if Trump is not voted in. I mean they used to have the Whigs, so anything is possible.

Who knows? This whole thing is just crazy.

They keep bringing up "Let the People decide" who the next President, and therefore, the next Justice, will be....

Uh... 4 years ago, the People decided who their President would be, and during his 4 years as President, his job is to nominate Justices, and the People would like You to do Your job. We didn't elect a President for 3 years.

McConnell is a petulant evil turtle man who needs to do his job with the rest of the senate. This is ridiculous. They should be embarrassed.

Meanwhile, a republican congressman has introduced a bill to make magic recognized as a national pastime. Really? REALLY? I know this doesn't have to do with the SCOTUS nominee but more about how it's stupid things like this that are being pushed through but healthcare, veterans, and jobs are thrown by the wayside. Their priorities are a joke.

the thing that really bothers me, is the Republican Party has said that even if trump is the peoples choice as nominee, they would still try to prevent him from getting the nomination if he did not have enough votes. So then the party delegates would decide the nominee instead of the people. So now the Republican Party provides lip service that "the people" should decide the president, but they are trying to subvert this process.

So the people decided that Obama should be president. They have been trying to nominate Trump or Hillary or Sanders. under HRC or sanders they are not going to get a moderate. Frankly, even under trump the likely won't get a staunch republican either. So I really have to question what is really going on. Is being obstructionist their end game?

If they stall, can we start a class action lawsuit to get our taxes back for failure of the government to do their job.

This is absurd. We are the laughing stock of the world!

He doesn't have to give people ideas. If he doesn't secure the nomination and they randomly choose someone else people are going to be angry. If he has a majority of delegates even if it's not 1237, it should count for something. Instead it shows how political parties have too much control. We want you to vote but we didn't like your choice so we will decide for you. It makes the whole primary process a joke and waste of time.

EXACTLY!!!! They are all scared of him. he is going to blow their shit up, which in the end is going t hurt their pockets and uncover so much deceit.

People need to look at the big picture. He will surround himself with the best, and he has a better chance of getting this country back to where it needs to be than Hillary. Yes, he has a big mouth, but we need a big mouth to take down this corrupt government, to battle ILLEGAL immigration, to bring our military back, to stand up for our Vets, to bring jobs back to the USA, to take back control of our lives instead of the government controlling it all. This country is becoming a dictatorship, and if the GOP doesn't stand by the man with the most delegates at the end, it is proof of that. This goes for the democratic side too, they are just as or even more corrupt.

First, it's still not clear that he is going to get the majority of delegates. link 538

There is no need to say what he said.

Look at the bigger picture? Racism? Empty promises? Etc.

Surround himself with the best? He's just said he will be his own campaign's foreign policy adviser:

'I'm speaking with myself, number one, because I have a very good brain and I've said a lot of things,'

That's a big pile of nope.

He has given no detailed plans.

I heard on the news that Garland already had to go through a confirmation hearing to become an appellate judge- and they obviously thought him worthy.

There is no reason for them to not hold the hearings. They have the right to deny confirmation- but Obama chose someone who is a centrist so it'll be interesting to see how they spin this.

I agree with you that they need to honor what the people want, even if it will result in a huge disaster. We'll get the president we deserve, even if he sends our kids off to war with Mexico and his tax plan will be a huuuuuuge disaster for the country. Article
