Is anyone else afraid to travel with kids, since having kids?

Before having kids DH and I loved to travel. We went to Machu Picchu, Spain, Mexico, Ecuador, St. Lucia, etc etc and always looked forward to one day traveling with our future kids.

We had DS1 6 years ago (and DS2 is now 2)and so far have only taken Disney/Florida trips but have decided that this summer we'll finally take a trip somewhere else. Well, I've spent hours researching island after island and just when I think I've made up my mind about where we should go, some travel warning or just fear that something could happen makes me decide we can't go there.

I've ruled out so many places I want to go and suddenly all I think I'm willing to do is Puerto Rico bc it's so close (we're OOS in FL now). What happened to me? I'm so afraid something will happen (burglary, assault) or that my kids will get sick and medical care won't be good enough. I've lost my adventurous self. I'm almost disappointed with myself. Is it just me? I feel so paranoid.

i get it! we used to travel all over! our DS is 5 now... and his only flights have been to orlando/disney LOL DH jokes around that DS thinks all planes only go to disney Chat Icon
BUT... we've also done a couple cruises. its a nice way to see some different places, but still have a "home base" that has some medical care (and a system on place) and you can do organized tours that might be a little more safe than exploring on your own.... maybe try that??
the way i look at it is that young kids are tough- and it IS different traveling with them... so do the easier trips now (Disney, beach, etc) and you'll have time when they get older to get adventurous with them. They won't really apperceive the more adventurous trips right now anyway!! LOL

Re: Is anyone else afraid to travel with kids, since having kids?

Yep! I didn't care when it was just us, but now that i have a DD, who I am very protective of, I just don't care to take the risk. I know it's silly and stuff can happen anywhere, but even researching Puerto Rico, which I know is very safe, I felt a bit nervous. We ended up going to a resort in Florida instead.
So I feel you. And i know it's irrational in a way. But I can't help it. Not when it comes to my DD.
I never thought I'd be like this before I became a mom...in fact I swore I wouldn't.
But I was wrong I guess

I can totally relate. I won't just take my kids anywhere. I have to really research the place were going. I think because my girls both have severe asthma I really get nervous. My sil/bil wanted us to go with them to the Dominican Republic and I really wanted to but I was too afraid. I think it will be a while before we travel outside of the US.

I thought I was going to be like that but dd is really easy to travel with and we love haVing her around. That being said though I will never leave her with an unknown sitter at one of these places. That scares the crappola out of me.

The most dangerous place to be with your kid is your car. I let that statistic ground me when I'm having fears that might not be completely logical. Hth

Maybe get your feet wet by traveling to different places in the US (California/ West Coast, Arizona, etc) and then you will feel more comfortable going some more "exotic" places?

I'm not nervous at all. That said, I wouldn't travel somewhere facing turmoil. We brought our DS to Puerto Rico and had a trip to St Lucia planned although will likely have to cancel. I'm just dont worry about irrational "what ifs.". Traveling is important to us and I want to show my DS the world and not instill fear in him... Like someone said, the real danger is driving your kids around the neighborhood.

We don't travel much with the kids but they are still little. Although I can't believe DD still hasn't been on a plane!

DH and I traveled our fair share but I was never a particularly adventurous traveler to begin with. So it's not like I'm going to plan those types of family trips. I definitely have a list of places in mind to go with them and I'm hoping to travel more with them as they get older. Honestly, I find it to be a huge PIA to travel with them.

No, not at all and I can't wait to start doing more exciting vacations with her! Hoping she can handle a plane ride to Europe in a year or two.

i am excited to travel with my kids, my 3 year old has been to aruba 3 times, the baby just had his first trip. I would be skeptical to go somewhere that didn't have great medical care though. We actually had to take my 7 month old to dr in aruba last week and they are amazing (we knew they were, but never had to experience it)

We traveled everywhere before DS and we still travel with DS but with safety in mind. We went to PR, Hong Kong and recently Curacao with no issues at all. It takes him longer to adjust but he actually travels well so we are lucky.

We are (were) also huge travelers before kids but it's a just a bit more expensive and logistically challenging. We took our 2 year old to Italy and it was one of our best trips yet. We are now planning a family trip with our 3 year old and 3 month old out west to the Grand Canyon. We want the kids to get used to it / feel like it's the norm to adapt to new places.

This. There are tons of wonderful places to visit here in the US that are not Disney. I can't wait to take my kids to all the awesome national parks out west. We will probably hold off on international travel (other than maybe Canada) for a while.

See I have no issue travelling in the US.
It's the Caribbean and Europe that worry me.
And I know that's irrational. (well some of it is, I would NEVER go back to Jamaica after my experience there- with or without kids!)

Well it's not like it's necessary for young kids to go to Europe. I didn't go until the summer after I graduated high school and that was pretty normal then. I see nothing wrong with that no matter what the reasons.

yeah all i can think of is that my DD would be SUCH a pain in the @ on such a long flight and with a time change like that too! Chat Icon

Re: Is anyone else afraid to travel with kids, since having kids?

I'm glad to know it's not just me. I understand it's irrational but the thought of something serious happening to one of my babies someplace is terrifying. Of course things happen here too. My little guy had a serious head injury .5 mile from my house and I think it's things like that that have changed my perspective.

If you had asked me 3 weeks ago whether I had any fears traveling with my boys abroad I would have thought you were crazy for asking me as I always planned to travel with them. You never know how you'll react until you are actually actively planning it.

My kids with be 8 & 5 by the time I have the guts to get them on a plane. And this summer, it will be twice in two months. I'm nervous as hell. We have been on a few trips to Lancaster, Cruises out of NY and drove down to Florida - but never ever on a plane.

I understand your fear Chat Icon

Nope, my oldest was on a plane at 9 months. If we had the money, we would travel all the time.

My youngest was on a plane probably 10 times by age 18 months. It's not flying that concerns me.

I'm with you. but I'll be honest.. we were away last year in Cali and DD (aged 2.5) spiked a 105 fever. We had to bring her to the ER and it was a 7 HOUR WAIT! There was no Ped unit. I had a full meltdown. In the end, we were out in 4 hours but she never did see a dr, just a head nurse. Goes to show you that wherever you do go, something could happen. I wasn't even out of the country.
