Mom shames a bully on Facebook — and it’s her own son

An angry mother has divided opinion after she took to Facebook to shame her son for being a “bully” at school.

Single mom Terry Evans made a furious Facebook post last month after her 12-year-old son, Jacob, stamped on the foot of a new girl at his school.

In her post, Terry writes that she is “disgusted” at her son, and threatens that he faces big trouble if he “so much as [breathes] in her or anyone’s direction in a bullying manner.”

Terry had initially tagged her young son in the post so his friends would see that “his actions have consequences,” but she removed his name when the post went viral.

The original post reads: “Absolutely disgusted that my 12 year old son saw fit to purposefully tread on a new girls foot at school and twist his foot with such force it broke her brand new shoes (causing the heel) to snap.

“I’ll tell you something Jacob if you so much as breath in her or anyone’s direction in a bullying manner I will personally hand you over to their parents for every demeaning chore they see fit for as long as they do… kiss goodbye to your birthday money as you will be buying the girl a new pair of shoes and a bunch of flowers! #iwillnothaveabullyinmyhouse”

Some people criticized her for shaming her son so publicly, with one commenter saying: “Why extend the humiliation? Your poor son. This will haunt him forever. A mistake at 12, online now for all to see.”

Another commented: “This is an incredibly dangerous thing to do to any child. What is even more disturbing are the huge numbers on here who cannot even see the dangers of what she has done.”

But Terry was undeterred by the criticism, and added an update to the controversial post to say she doesn’t care what people think about her parenting style.

The update adds: “To answer a few questions, yes my son can see it, he was tagged in it before it went viral (which I didn’t realise was going to happen) so his friends could see that his actions have consequences, he is not big, clever, hard or funny, he’s a 12 year old boy answerable to his mam.

“I don’t much care who doesn’t agree with my parenting style, my son humiliated and embarrassed a girl, regardless of his reasoning (which was he didn’t expect to break the shoe he just thought she may step out of it or stumble) that little girl still cried, for anyone’s knowledge that girl may have left her old school because she was being bullied… then imagine how much worse my son’s ridiculous act would have made her feel.

“So my so called embarrassing him online is a to be quite frankly nothing in comparison to the humiliation that little girl had to face walking round with a broken shoe and red eyes from crying when she is new.

“Ps… of course I sat and spoke to him about his behaviour, I didn’t just tag him in a post and he read it! I am wholly confident this was a single occurrence which won’t be repeated.”

Publicly shaming her son is going to help him how? I don't get it. Did she want to prove to her FB friends that she was a good parent by publicly humiliating her son? At an age like 12 when kids typically start withdrawing from their parents anyway this is a very dangerous thing to do.

Was the kid wrong? Hell yes.

Should he apologize profusely to this child and her family? Yes

Should he receive a harsh punishment from his mom? Yes.

Should his mom be blasting this all over FB? Absolutely not.

People are so stupid when it comes to FB.

Whoa.

I'm all for parents disciplining their children but this seems SO unnecessarily counterproductive. His mother should not be putting this on FB, what a completely moronic use of social media to get parenting asspats.

These are issues best dealt with privately.

And really, the mom is just bullying her kid on FB.

Yup
Her kid
Her house
Her Rules

I see no big deal. Frankly good for her.
Our kids need to learn they are responsible for their own actions. And every action has an outcome.

Meh. Next story.

ETA: who are you mad at the mom for posting it or the so-called friends for cashing in on the viral popularity of it? Who's more childish? Another reason my FB 'friends' are so limited. Not worth the drama.

I say good for her

Too many @hole kids these days. Was just reading in a fb group a mom who had some skateboard punk fall on her car. And was acting pinky and snap chatted a pic of the woman who was the real victim. And of course some people were defending him.

So yes.. I don't mind what this lady did. I'm sure she knows her son and what may work to drive the point home.

her kid acted like an ahole and now he knows how it feels to be humiliated! he wont be scared for life and I bet he will think twice before doing it again.

people are way to uptight and kids are way to shielded now a days. god forbid we make our children held accountable for their actions. eye for an eye

and she didn't realize it would be shared so many times and when she did she removed his tag.

As someone who was bullied as a kid when I was the new 12 year old girl, I say THANK YOU!! to that mom! Good for her!! To feel how I felt when I was the new kid on the bus and to have my glasses ripped off my face, called four eyes as everyone started to call me that as they tossed my glasses around the bus. I was embarrassed, humiliated and it changed me for life. I was lucky enough to have the bullys mom defend me also, and she handled it similar but in a different way since internet wasn't around like today. She never bothered me or anyone again thankfully because her mom did not stand for it. My children better never bully anyone. I have already began teaching my 6 year old about bullying and how it can make someone cry. I tell her our friends can all be different but no matter what we love them all the same.

EH, I don't know how I feel about it! As someone who was picked on in school, I don't feel sorry for the kid, I feel sorry for the little girl. Not only is she embarrassed at school, but now the post went viral and she embarrassed publically. Her name might not be in the post, but going back to when I was 12 years old, I'd know it was me and I'd be SO embarrassed!

I can appreciate the mom's intent. And it's nice to see a parent being accountable for her kid instead of being one of those 'not my kid' parents. But I also think it went too far.

Mom shames a bully on Facebook — and it’s her own son

Unfortunately we live in the world where social media reigns. I really do not think she did anything wrong and obviously the story about what he did to the girl was already floating around because she knew about it and anyone that is on one of those "school district mom's" pages knows that the story was already out there.. I think the whole point by tagging him and letting his friends see is that they can not get away with these things any more and people know. If she was calling out someone else's son, I would not be agreeing with her but since it is her own, good for her.

If more parents did things like this, maybe there would be less bullying. You make fun of a kid, hurt a kid, beat up a kid, then why shouldn't you be shown the same disrespect, tough guy?

Oh the poor bully you say? Well I say, you learn from experience, and giving it back to the bully will teach him/her more of a lesson than a no, my sweet baby boy, we don't tease other children, ok hunny. he/she will go to school the next day and continue to get a rise from friends.

BUT I consider myself a pretty tough mom. I do not do well with teasing and being mean to friends. My daughter is 4 and if I see it happening she is corrected right then and there and made to apologize. I will never tolerate it.

I'm not sure how I feel about this but I do applaud the fact that this mother is serious about getting her son to change. As a teacher, I all too often see kids get "spoken to" for bullying and the behavior does not change one bit. The consequences aren't serious enough many times. Not sure what the answer is but bullying behavior cannot be tolerated.

Good for this mom! Apparently the only way kids can be reached now a days is social media. Kudos to her. Now her son will know how it feels. I see nothing wrong with it. I don't have kids. But does this mean that when I do I will do this to them? No- and I likely wouldn't because I don't use social media, however I cannot judge this woman's parenting because I am not a parent but I do think she sent a loud clear message to him

Better humiliate my son now and teach him, then him being the reason some poor kid hung themselves in their room. Bullying is disgusting and serious, wish more parents took it this serious.

First, can we PLEASE stop throwing the word "bullying" around. This mom did NOT "bully" her son, she taught him a lesson. She taught him that actions have consequences. She taught him to respect how that little girl must have felt by putting him in a situation that would make him feel equally uncomfortable. It's called tough parenting and if more parents practiced it instead of coddling their kids and letting them run around doing whatever the h-e-l-l they want without ever being held accountable we'd have a much kinder, more considerate, and less self absorbed generation of kids.

Hopefully next time this kid will think twice before he decides to push someone else around. Good for this mom for taking some action, nipping the problem in the bud, and holding her son responsible. I don't care if your kid is 4, 12, or 18................you should ALWAYS be on them to act better, treat people nicer, and take responsibility for their actions, ESPECIALLY when their actions hurt someone else.

That anyone could think what this mom did is wrong is actually quite surprising to me. It's no different than those viral FB posts that go around where parents publicly ground their kids or make them apologize on their own FB page for all their friends to see............and we applaud those parents. Yet this mom is being criticized for disciplining and being proactive about what her son did? That's just ridiculous. I have NO problem with what she did, good on her for handling the situation!
