I have always done my own with turbotax and so has myhusband..but this year he is getting half of his return when we did them separate. So I am thinking we should go to someone but do not want to spend $$$$. Suggestions? TIA

Just curious--did you possibly bump up in tax brackets filing together this year? Unfortunately that is our situation--if we filed separately, we would have received large refunds but are getting hit with the "marriage penalty" as we are bumped into a higher tax bracket this year.

I don't have a recommendation though--I'm a CPA (though I'm not a tax preparer) we I do our own taxes.

Paul Lorentzen he's located in Port Jeff Station. He's done my parents taxes for about 20 years and mine since I have been working. Once I got married DH and I continued to use him. $175 for an itemized deduction return

Not sure but probably! My return separate is the same as past years but DH did the EZ form, so now when we moved him to the itemized he went down in what he would get back.

So you are both filing married filing separate returns? Have you tried filing joint? It might work out better that way.

You have to prepare it both ways.

Sometimes it works out and sometimes not because certain deductions are not permitted if you file separately. Student loan interest is an example. There are a few.

Also, I've heard switching back and forth between joint and separate on a continuous basis (over course of few years) can trigger an audit. An IRS friend was telling me technically, you aren't suppose to filing separately just because it puts you in a better tax position. But EVERYONE does it and the chance of being audited is slim... Anyone else hear that? It was news to me.

Also to OP. Double check the calculations by hand. In my experience, I've found errors with TT's math.

That's not true at all. Why aren't you supposed to file separately? The tax rate is higher, you are ineligible for certain credits. For most people it doesn't put you in a better category. If they didn't want you to file it they wouldn't give you a choice.

I have someone prep my taxes and the first time he did it he did it separate and then together and we benefited from filing together and now every year we just file together.

I only pay $150 to get my taxes done. i rather spend the money then having to worry about doing it myself and worrying if i am missing or messing anything up.

The preparer that I have been using charges us $425!! Its ridiculous....for a joint filing. Time to find someone else. What I have noticed is that the past 2 yrs I have received my returns/papers back in an H&R Block envelope - so Im thinking does he send it out to them to do - perhaps he is overwhelmed and charges us double??!
