20/20 Susan Klebold interview

Just wondering if anyone watched and what you thought of it. I remember when Columbine happened and wondering about the parents. I thought Diane Sawyer did a great job.

I always feel for the parents of the killers in this case.

I don't know, but I have forgiven them in this case.

My cousin was there in Columbine. He hid under a desk in a classroom. He knew the killers.

Sorry, this is difficult for me.

I watched and thought it was a good interview. I feel terrible for the parents of the shooters in these type of cases. I couldn't even imagine having to wake up everyday to know that you raised someone who has caused that much harm to others.

I feel for every person involved but i couldnt help like feeling that this mom had her head in the clouds. Not to sound insensitive but her son already received two felons, was acting withdrawn and even asked her at one point for a gun! He also says she stopped searching his room because she wanted to honor his privacy... I couldnt help but think to myself 'are you completely in denial woman'?

I read a couple articles about her and her son and the shooting. From what I read, his criminal activity was along the lines of stealing computers- so it was a leap to think he'd go from that to mass murder.

Eric Harris, on the other hand, seems to have been a full blown psychopath.

I agree but it was clear he was getting into trouble. They also stated in the interview that her other son had issues with drugs. I just feel if you have one kid involved with drugs, another getting into trouble, then you would be on high alert for anything and everything. The asking for a gun thing was odd to me and as a parent, i would be snooping around my son's car, room, watching who he is hanging out with etc. There just didnt seem to be a sense of urgency but i also understand that back then, no one would have ever imagined something so terrible. All in all, its a sad thing all around...

I watched and thought it was a good interview. She definitely missed a lot of signals or was just in denial and didn't want to believe what was happening right in front of her. I feel for her though that this is hanging over her head every single day.

I feel so bad for this woman. For everyone.

No one thinks their kid is going to be a mass murderer. And teenagers being moody is par for the course. The suicide thoughts stats were surprisingly - 15 to 20% of teens have had those thoughts. I think teen hood is hard for many reasons but I can't help but think much of it goes hand in hand with chemical and hormonal imbalances that come with puberty. But I imagine it's hard for average parent to suspect true depression because teens are both secretive and fickle. They may not say how they really feel or they may seem ok one day and down the next.

It's just so sad. All around. All anyone can do is to learn from this.

In this day and age I would totally agree with this statement.
It was a different time then, things like mass school shootings were not something people thought about 17 years ago .

I think it is a really tough place to be in. As a parent, I know I don't want to be "that" parent, but I try to balance it. I think it is easy to say what she did wrong, but we weren't there and I can't pass judgement.

This woman needs to live every day with her son did. I think that is torture enough.

I was thinking that too. I was thinking where was she when he was building all those bombs they were planning to detonate?
But at the same time I can't really blame her because I think this could happen to any parent no matter how good of a parent you are or try to be. I was thinking of my two sons & it terrifies me to think that at some point they could do something really terrible & how would I feel & it makes me want to keep them little & innocent forever.
What I found really eerie was when they were showing pictures of all those cute little kids & you think they're victims of attacks & feel sorry for them, then they said those were all photos of future school shooters... that freaked me out because it made me really think about the fact that all these people who commit these evil acts started out as cute little kids so really it could happen to any parent.
Mostly I feel sorry for this mother.
On a side note, was the woman who they said bought these kids the weapons prosecuted at all??

I did not see the interview and will.

My only real comment is about bullying. We as a society need to do better. We need good programs in schools to stop bullying. I was mercilessly bullied in school. Although I never thought about harming anyone I would not have shed a tear if they all died in a fire. Yes, that's harsh. But these kids were mean an unrelenting to someone they thought was an easy target. I have since completely put it all behind me and I'm a
Much better person for being able to move on.

But I would not have shed a tear if they all
Died in a bus/whatever accident.

Re: 20/20 Susan Klebold interview

I do feel sorry for her, that she has to live everyday with what her son did, and the loss of her own son, disturbed as he was, and family in the process. It must be agonizing and something nobody should have to go through. However, I'm torn. This lady really was clueless. She contradicts herself. She's the same lady that made a statement years earlier that she didn't need the victims' forgiveness because she felt she had done nothing wrong and didn't need forgiving.... after her son gunned down their children, she has the nerve to be so incredibly insensitive and emotionally detached... now she writes a book and says she's there for the families if they need her. In the interview she says she knew Eric Harris and his family well, that she wouldn't have let her son hang out with him had she not gotten to know them... did it not occur to her to sever her son's friendship after the first time they'd gotten arrested together for theft? She didn't think Harris could be a bad influence on her son? Did she know Harris was seeing a psychiatrist and on medication? If not she didn't know them as well as she'd like to think she did. Why was she so passive about the homework assignment her son turned in that sent up red flags with the teacher so much so that she passed it on to the guidance counselor? Any concerned parent would've demanded to know what their son wrote to set off such warning bells, but this lady was like "well the teacher didn't have it, and I asked Dylan but he said he didn't have it either, so that was that." Her son gets arrested for theft, had asked for a gun, told her he couldn't control his actions when she physically pushed him, and she felt she had to respect his privacy and not search his room? She says they were a model family, I'd like to know what was going on in their home that 100% of her offspring were on a destructive path. Where was she when her son was spending hours building bombs with his bff? If she had already gone through the lies and secrecy with her first born and his addictions, why wasn't she extra vigilant with the youngest so as to not repeat the same mistakes? This kid gets arrested and she thinks that earns him privacy?

I do think it's somewhat unfair to pin it all on her when clearly so many people dropped the ball in this situation. They were making disturbing movies on school grounds about killing students, they were illegally acquiring firearms ,.they were purchasing materials to make explosives, they maintained a website with disturbing journal entries and direct explicit death threats. The investigator that viewed the website called for a search warrant but then let it slip through the cracks. Harris' psychiatist didn't determine that he could pose a danger to himself or others? He didn't recognize this kid was a psychopath with a God complex? He talked about killing people as if they were bugs to be crushed. Where were they storing all their weapons and ammunition? Their actions required a lot of time, planning, deception, and secrecy. Nobody was suspicious of their behavior at all? No parent, teacher, school administrator, doctor, law enforcemrnt officer, friend, fellow student, store clerk caught any of the red flags? Nobody overheard anything? They were planning their attack for over a year. They didn't just wake up one morning, snapped, and decide to each take a gun to school. For two.high school.minors they sure had a lot of free time with no parental supervision to draft such an elaborate plan, complete with drawings and written instructions. As seniors how did they find the time for all that plotting, bomb building, target practice along with normal teenage behavior such as going to school, studying, doing homework, studying for the SATs, applying to colleges, extracurriculars, part time jobs, chores, spending time with family.... she didn't think her son was spending a bit too much time with Harris? It wasn't just one armed gunman who shot up a school in this particular case. It was a duo which meant that 2 sets of parents, 4 adults, turned a blind eye. I'm not buying any of it. The signs were everywhere if she/they would've just open her eyes. 17 years later and she's still as oblivious as ever. Her book should be titled "I fukced up and I'm sorry".

Re: 20/20 Susan Klebold interview

Hindsight is always 20/20, but I can honestly say that even though I never got involved with drugs, alcohol, or into any trouble, SO MANY of my friends' parents had their "heads in the sand." So many kids are in all kinds of trouble with drugs, alcohol, and unaccounted for time, etc. today, and so many people that we ALL know have their heads in the sand and either do not know or are not alarmed.

We'd all like to think that we'd know if something were this wrong and that we'd do all the right things and in time...but how many people here are survivors of suicide? I am not, but I know enough who are and they will tell anyone--it's not always about what someone else should have known or been expected to do.

It's too easy for us to look at this woman, for whom all went so nightmarishly bad, and lay the blame squarely at her feet. Way too easy. She has nothing but my sympathy.
