Anyone Familiar with the Melbourne/Palm Bay FL area?

DH and I are relocating for my work over the summer, and this is the area we are leaning towards. For the first year we're planning on renting, until we are familiar with the towns. We've already scheduled a trip to view apartments in June, but was wondering if anyone has any recommendations on complexes, or areas to avoid. I know there are 2 colleges in Melbourne, and many complexes are used as dorms- we are trying to filter these out.

Thanks

My DH and I lived there for 4 years actually (1997-2001). We lived in The Vinings apartment complex in Palm Bay and at the time it was very nice, one of the nicest in the area. It was right off of Babcock Street and was convenient to everything............Publix, dining, Kmart, banks and the movie theater. It's a nice area but small, not a huge nightlife or a ton of things going on but there are some nice areas to live within the county. If you wanted to go a little further north, Viera was a nice town with lots of newer construction back when we lived down there. If you have any questions, feel free to FM me. Chat Icon

Viera for sure. DH's sister and her family have lived there for maybe 15 years. It has grown so much. Lots of nice developments. They're very happy there.

Def Viera. I drive up that way for work sometimes and it's nice, and has everything.

I'm not super familiar with the area, but my mom's lived in the area of 20 years (I only know it from my visits). She lives in Rockledge and it's a nice area. It's convenient - close to I-95, the zoo, etc.

I lived there for years. Business is very slow and jobs are hard to get. Lots of crime and drugs. Schools have gone WAY down hill.

Viera is nicer. Be very wary and careful of the areas you pick.

Thank you all. We have a trip planned in June, so we will check out the Rockledge/Veira area. I'm shocked though that the prices of apartments are comparable to NY.

Really? I'm surprised to hear that. DH's parents are looking to move down there to be near their daughter and they're looking to rent and they rave about much cheaper it is than their rent up here.

I think they were looking at Mission Bay in Viera.

Agree, that area is not the best to be in. Focus your search elsewhere.

Really? Are you sure??? That wasn't my experience at all. Rent was dirt cheap there for really nice complexes. I had a 1000 sq ft apartment on the third floor with vaulted ceilings and a lake view for $610/month. You couldn't get that in NY.

I agree with a PP about jobs down there, they generally suck. My DH is a digital design engineer and worked at Harris (who basically owns the county) so financially we were set down there but unless you're an engineer, doctor or lawyer..........the jobs are scarce and the pay was pretty dismal. I struggled to find anything worthwhile down there with my degree and I couldn't believe how bad the salaries were for most jobs. Just something to be aware of.

Also, it's not like LI where you have nice towns, as a whole. Within each town there are pockets of nice areas/neighborhoods so you might find a beautiful section of homes but when you drive out of the gates you're next door to a trailer park. It's just very different from here.

And I agree with the PP about the schools, they are pretty lousy. A lot of the people who worked with my DH at Harris had their kids in private school because the public schools were so bad.

I agree about the jobs. DH's family all work at the space center. There really isn't much else.

As for the schools, his family was very happy with the elementary schools but they're just getting into secondary school. I know they weren't thrilled with the zoning.
