I think the issue was what the black panthers represented, justice to the mistreating of a minority, even if violence is needed, which is so different from what Marting Luther King preached, pretty much the same thing BUT without the violence.

I think you need to read up a bit more on the Black Panthers, TBH.

There is so much TBP fought for, great causes, more or less the same ideals that MLK had except the violence and I think that was what made some ppl have some issues regarding beyonce's performance/message.

I made a quick research to show u what I was referring too:

"The Black Panthers believed that the non-violent campaign ofMartin Luther King had failed and any promised changes to their lifestyle via the ‘traditional’ civil rights movement, would take too long to be implemented or simply not introduced. The language of the Black Panthers was violent as was their public stance. The two founders of the Black Panther Party were Huey Percy Newton and Bobby Seale. They preached for a “revolutionary war” but though they considered themselves an African-American party, they were willing to speak out for all those who were oppressed from whatever minority group. They were willing to use violence to get what they wanted."

Site

Look, I get what you are saying, but you really need to read a bit more about them. What you are saying is too simple. For example, the treatment of Bobby Seale in court was disgusting (handcuffed and mouth taped over).

I'm not giving a full biography of who TBP were, I'm simply pointjng out one aspect of this whole beyonce controversy, what some ppl seem to have a problem with (based on what I'm reading on the tabloids). I personally don't agree or disagree, it's just a simple observation, that's all.

My issue with her and her video and performance is this. If it were the other way around, Al Sharpton and his band of cronies would be out crucifying whoever did it. I HATE double standards. I understand they want equality and fair treatment, but this is NOT the way to do it. I feel like she just further pushed the divide and didn't benefit anyone.

Plus, she USED to be such a class act. Since when does she rap and use profanity in her performances? I wish she would go back to the days of Destiny's Child.

There are plenty of performances that feature only white dancers, backup singers, etc. Do you see black people up in arms?

And furthermore, she can only be a likable entertainer as long as she lives up to white standards of acceptability? What exactly IS the correct way to "want equality and fair treatment?" They can only be equal and treated fairly if they do what white people want? It is not the sole responsibiltiy of people of color to tear down the system that was built to oppress them.

Please.

I could care less about the color of her backup dancers. My post wasn't about that. Its about the racist and demeaning message that she sent with the costumes and the video. There's enough problems in our society without celebrities using their power to further press an already sore issue.
And, if you actually read the last part of my post was that she used to be a classy, respectable performer. She was never one to parade around with her a$$ hanging out and rapping using profanity. It had nothing to do with what is acceptable to "white people"

Personally I thought her performance was in very poor taste. Not the venue for a political statement IMO.

The whole damn thing went over my head and probably 90% of the country's before Social Media got a hold of it. I didn't make the connection with her outfit, missed the dancers nod to the Black Panthers and totally missed any signs they were holding.

I give zero f*cks about Beyonce or anything she has to say. Doesn't mean I don't care about any issues she may be speaking too, but nothing she says means anything to me, nor does it enlighten me in anyway. She is a celebrity to me and nothing more.

She can knock herself out with any message she wants, its a free country. I just don't care what she has to say (and a lot of celebrities for that matter).

I missed the whole damn thing.

Re: Half time show

watching it without knowing about the political aspects of the performance honestly I thought the whole halftime stunk
I'm not a fan of Coldplay. And Beyoncé and Bruno Mars recently performed at the halftime so why bring them out again
I thought beyonces performance was pretty bad. She has been doing those same dance moves for a while now and the same recycled outfit. I couldn't understand half the lyrics so I would had no idea what it was about

People who like her and her message will love it people who don't like her or her message won't like it
Personally I haven't liked her for a long time so I don't pay much attention to anything she does

Honestly, I was too busy paying attention to Bruno Mars. When he wasn't on screen I was just waiting for him to come back and wasn't paying much attention to her at all.

But I did hear about all the controversy today.

If Beyonce truly cares about her community, why doesnt she put her money where her mouth is and donate the proceeds made from this video to the victims portrayed in it? Wouldn't that send a more meaningful message? Her and her husband's charitable contributions are measly in comparision to their vast fortunes.

I just think thay if you really care about your community, then you would actually do something to make a difference. I cant help but look at her video/perfomance at the Super Bowl is her just taking advantage of the hot button topic these days and profiting from it.

I'm not B fan, but they have. They paid for several funerals from the Baltimore riots and are donating a huge amount of money to address the Flint water problem.

She's also donated over $7m to help Houston's homeless epidemic since Hurricane Katrina.

Mmm I don't know if I like the term anti police.

I don't think she (or most law abiding people) are anti police. I think we have some issues that need fixing regarding law enforcement - especially in regards to race matters.

I think you can be pro black lives matter without being anti police. The things that have happened & continue to happen in this day and age are atrocious. And not just with cops but also with situations like Katrina.

I just don't think that any time someone speaks out against the ills of law enforcement - (and let's not kid ourselves, no establishment is without its evils, it's flaws, with room for reform and/or improvement) - that suddenly you're disrespecting an entire force, you know? You're simply speaking up for the victims and desiring to better things as a whole for everyone.

All in all, I think those who believe in the notion of systemic racism aren't going to see an issue with beyonces video or performance.

Agreed.

That being said. I cannot stand her and think she and her (newer) music are gross.

I totally agree with this.

However, I think communication is a major issue.

The "black lives matter" ideology is too often delivered in a way that damages the cause.

I did not see the halftime show - if the Giants don't make it to the Superbowl I couldn't care less - but I do think Beyonce sitting on top of a sinking police car is in poor taste.

Yes, I hold the concept of free speech as dear as anyone else. But just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

On the flip side, people who take the opposite view are very quick to label some as "anti police" when all they want is to be treated fairly.

If people on both sides made their statements more thoughtfully maybe we'd get somewhere.

I usually agree with things that you say JennP but this is baffling to me.

You have to understand that as a white person, dictating how and what BLM says or does is oppression. It's not a movement for white people. You don't have to get it, agree with it, understand it, or anything of the sort. Their struggle is not your struggle. Attempting to force inclusion out of their disenfranchisement is the ultimate hypocrisy. Saying they have a right to free speech, but shouldn't use it to express themselves? I don't understand that. The fact that any white person wants to dictate their message is oppression - it's very simple. If they made more thoughtful statements maybe we'd get somewhere? I shouldn't have to explain why that thought process is so harmful and problematic.

I read a quote that really sums up this whole issue:

Rather than saying racism doesn't exist, just say you don't care. It's easier to respect, less insulting, and more accurate.

I really think the whole thing was pointless. Sure it gained attention but it didn't contribute anything meaningful to the cause.

Yes, people are still talking about it, but when I look on the news article comments, the people still giving it attention are white bigots that aren't changing their mind about anything ... probably ever.

I wouldn't tell someone how to express themselves, but it seems to me, that no matter who you are & what your cause or goal is, when you are trying to make progress, you have to be able to clearly convey your point to the people that your trying to reach. It's about knowing your audience.

I don't consider that ideology oppressive because it applies to everyone and every situation.

Re: Half time show

I have not been a fan of Beyoncé since Drunken Love came out and feel like her music has suffered. Frankly, none of the performances wows me, Chris Martin was this years left shark. Beyoncé just did the same old same old and Bruno Mars looked lost in the shuffle.

Now if Beyoncé wanted to have some sort of political statement, she is entitled to do so, but to me the Super Bowl is not the forum for it. If she wanted to do it at her concert, or have a benefit, or via her music video, absolutely. Add she should speak out, but this was not the time or place for it to happen. To me is degraded the message by coming out without pants and parading around.

Re: Half time show

I was a beyonce fan back in the destiny child days and owned one of their CDs but I am not a music fan generally (the only music I have had on ANY of my iphones is that u2 cd and only because I cant figure out how to delete it). I did like her Single Ladies video and thought the song was catchy but I dont typically follow her music at all.

That said, I have to disagree with a lot of what is said here. I initially took interest in the video because we just visited NOLA a few weeks ago for the first time, and that coupled with it being a "surprise video!" made me curious to see it. I also googled a few articles talking about it and read some really interesting reviews analyzing it and breaking it down. As a white Jewish girl from LI I did not get all of the references but after reading some of these (really great) analyses there is so much meaning to virtually all of the lyrics and visuals. A former law school classmate of mine shared a particularly great article this AM and I will repost it here if I can find it.

I can see how people would see it as anti-police but I think those parts of the video are really just trying to draw attention to and take a stand regarding some of the altercations that have been publicized lately and the BLM movement. (And to those who say she should put her money where her mouth is, I read that JayZ donated $1.5 mil to BLM the day before the video dropped and that she has been donating to all kinds of things including helping displaced NOLA residents after Katrina). I personally am not anti-police by any means, I strongly support our police, but I think its possible to support our police generally while also recognize that there are some bad apples in the bunch and that having issues with the problematic behavior of a select few doesnt mean I dont support the police as a whole. And, I think I would be naive to say that systematic racism doesn't exist. The video focuses a lot on loving black culture, sticking together, etc.

There are some really interesting articles out there on her video for those interested to learn more. (I always sought out great reviews on the Wire, Breaking Bad, Mad Men etc because there is always so much thought into every word, costume, scene, and I always miss a lot of it so I really enjoy getting a fuller picture of what I am seeing).

We are going to have to agree to disagree on our interpretations of the concept of oppression.

I don't believe stating that Beyonce could have used a better way to make a statement than showing a scene that COULD be interpreted as wishing death to the police could be the definition of oppression.

It's your condescension that's harmful. Save it. I am well educated, I teach Social Studies, and I understand the historical context of the topic.

We usually agree, but here we differ. Let's keep it moving.

Her "half time show" and her video does NOTHING to end or rectify any kind of racial divide. She only enhanced it. And honestly her name has been out of the spotlight for quite some time so what a way to gain attention under the guise of "fighting for a cause". She's an idiot. Period.

I called it the moment I saw it...I knew there would be issues. I have no problem with celebrating black culture, however, the Black Panthers were notoriously an anti-white group that supported violence as a method of civil rights. It was the wrong forum to use as a platform because it alienated much of the population.

I know JennP has already responded and this was not directed at me but I have to ask, what is the point of BLM? I support their mission but think they have major PR problems- they come across as a group who wants to say what they want to say without caring if they alienate people. It's not about wanting to dictate their message but wanting to see them present their message in a way that will get them what they want- I want to see this group be able to bring about change but doing things like disrupting a Bernie Sanders rally and not allowing him to speak (which I know was a few months ago) is foolish especially since he might be the only one running who really cares about people of color. I think if they were more strategic in their approach that they would get more traction.
