I work close to there. I was behind a bunch of steamfitters at DD and they said there was a fatality, this was just before the news was reporting it.

It's also being reported that's it's the same crane company that had an accident in august when an a/c unit dropped to the ground and injured 10 people.

Since 2010
Bay Crane has been hit with 65 violations and charged more than $42,000 in penalties.
I think these penalties need to be higher!

From an I-Team safety investigation

That's deplorable. How are they even still allowed to be in business and operate?

Agreed!
And why are these companies hiring them?!
I'm sure they can do a search and see the violations against them. Or any company they are looking to use.
For what, to save some money? smh

Crane collapse in lower Manhattan

Some I know very well was the only survivor of the crane collapse in Midtown 2008. He was buried alive under the rubble for hours. No one knew if he was alive for hours. It was one of the most frightening things I can ever imagine. His life is forever changed (physically and emotionally) because of that accident. Seeing this brings back some really terrible memories

My ex was injured in an elevator accident. And every time I see another one reported it still hits home. 10 yrs later and we're no longer together and yet I still get emotional. It's a terrible thing to go through.

Yep. Stuff like that always gets me.
Like so many people are scared of flying etc- so they avoid it like the plague for fear of dying. But then boom- you can die just sitting in your car, or walking down a city street in some freak asss accident.
Really makes you think

That one was horrible. I lived a few blocks away and remember the ground shaking and all the sirens. It took out an entire building and city block worth of damage. I can't even imagine what he went through. How terrifying.

Crane collapse in lower Manhattan

I work in construction we have cranes on our jobs all the time. 99% of the time nothing happens. There have been accidents that were completely avoidable but I have to say since the accidents in 2008 the city has put so many safety rules in place that things are so much better. And not only the city has but the construction managers have too. Its a scary industry to work in.....every time I get a news alert about any type of accident we worry about our guys. Our goal is to send everyone home how they came and that includes the people just walking by our sites.

Things like this hit us hard and it wasn't even our project.

Re: Crane collapse in lower Manhattan

I work just a couple of blocks from there.
I feel so horribly sad for the person who was killed.Chat Icon And those injured. It's just such a shame.
I walk on that street all the time, often in the morning if I get off the train early, so it could have easily been me if it had happened a different day. Scary.
I walked by at lunch & it was really crazy to see how huge the crane was & the destruction it caused, even from afar since the street was blocked off. I was hearing tons of sirens this morning so I knew it must have been pretty bad. Chat Icon
