I would go with A.

I am in a district where HS has great ratings. Our current K-2 elementary school has excellent ratings. Our school for 3-5 does not; the other one does. We plan on moving to be in the better school.

We were planning on moving anyway because of the layout of our house.

wow! ok, thank you for all your feedback!!!
i'll show my husband bc. he is pushing for the better school

..but the school might not actually be "better". I would call and ask how many self contained classrooms and inclusion classrooms they have in the "7" school. Or just ask how many students with IEPS. Not even sure they will tell you that though. Then call the "good one" and ask how many they have. If it's uneven, then there's your answer.

actually, when I called the good school , the one that is a "7" they said that that all the special ed kids go to the school that is rated 10 b/c they have the inclusion classrooms.

to be honest, I never heard of inclusion classrooms etc.. its all new to me. I only asked about special ed b.c I suspect my son may have adhd.. and they said if he went to the district preschool, no matter where he lives, he would be sent to the "10" school

what do you make of that?

Well, where do they house their self contained classrooms? Those are classes with ALL special education students in them. No general ed students. Inclusion is a mix of special and general ed.

Is the district pre-school housed at both schools or just the one? In our district, pre-school is only at one of the two schools. I think I'm confused about the ADHD thing. If your district is offering a special education preschool program for him through CPSE they don't usually go to in house pre-school for that. They go to a separate location. So was she saying that IF he has ADHD he would go to the 10 school, or just in general?

Inclusion means that they have classrooms where special needs children are integrated either part of the day or full day with their General Education peers.

Most of the time, and yes there are always exceptions, if one school houses most of the special needs children, that school is rated lower because of test scores. So for them to say it is the opposite is very surprising to me.

Take the ratings with a grain of salt. Look into the district as a whole. They all have to teach the same curriculum so as long as you are in the district it really should not matter what elementary school you go too. Now that being said, each elementary will have their own feel and may have different clubs and activities but the overall learning in the district will be the same in each school.

ok, I think the person that I spoke to had it wrong.
I called the district and they said that the all schools have specialized programs however, if there was one school that offered something that the other didn't have, then they can be reassigned to another school.

most cases, the home zoned school has everything I would need esp if I suspect ADHD.

I am going to start with my own school district and get him evaluated b.c they said if and when we transfer, we wont have to go through the process all over again, they will accept the evaluations.

I think at the end of the day, based on the advice of you lovely ladies, I will chose the townhouse with the basement.

If they both feed to the same High School then I would go with house B.

We chose our house for the school district. We will likely move again in a few years, but will stay in the district. We could get a lot more for our money in a neighboring town, but the districts weren't as good, so I didn't even look.

I bought A
Because elementary is the foundation of everything. I could have bought a bigger house and cheaper and got an ok High School and an alright grade school, but pretty area with nice 'stuff' but I chose a smaller home that fits us fine but a top rated elementary and one of the most sought after High Schools in our town. She doesn't even have to go to school there, she can choose a charter school and focus on STEM or something else, but her foundation, her grade school .. THAT was important. Robotics, small classes, well paid teachers, extreme close proximity to home, ... I chose A

Ironically the middle school was meh but since I moved here they built a brand new middle school which is now the huge pull to build bigger nice fancier houses around. So now she's got top notch all through.

Plus I can sell my house and pay for college later LOL since the area is now getting so much attention.
