What would you do?

I was cleaning out my office drawers and found an envelope that got stuck in the back. When I opened it there were 3 checks in it from 2014!

Two were from my dad to my kids for their bdays and 1 was from an aunt also for my kids bdays.

My husband said we should just chalk it up as a loss and we shouldn't mention it to them.

I thought maybe I would say something- at least to my dad.
What would you do?

What would you do?

I'd definitely let my dad know. If I was close to my aunt I'd let her know too.

What would you do?

I would take the money from my own account and give it to my kids and call it a loss.

Don't be like in Seinfeld when Jerry deposited all his childhood birthday checks and overdrew his grandmothers bank account Chat Icon

Definitely ask your dad - I'm not sure if there's an expiration to checks, sometimes they can be void after a certain period of time.

Checks are void after 120 days max, some are 90.

But yes, I would tell your dad.

I would take the money from your account and deposit it in your kids account first thing. You could tell your father, but i wouldn't tell your Aunt.

Re: What would you do?

I wouldn't tell my aunt, I'd just consider that one a loss. But I'd probably mention it to my Dad just because I'm so close with my parents that I know they wouldn't be offended or upset if I brought something like this to their attention.

Too funny! I am definitely putting money in my children's accounts from my own account. I don't want them to be shortchanged b/c of my mistake.
I know my dad is going to make me feel like a 5 year old if I ask him.:Chat Icon

Re: What would you do?

For me personally I could never bring myself to tell either of them...I would withdraw money from my own account and deposit it in the kids accounts. I would just chalk it up to a lesson learned!

This was my thought.
If I don't cash checks right away from my MIL and my aunt they always ask about it.

Re: What would you do?

I would chalk it up to a loss. If someone came to me and told me they found my uncashed check from 2 years ago I'd probably be annoyed.

The expiration is not necessarily true. My sister n law recently cashed checks from 2014 at her Pennsylvania bank.

Re: What would you do?

This happened to me. I let 2 checks expire from DH's grandmother but I let it go. If it were from a parent, I'd tell them.
