Cleaning sidewalks Nassau county
Anyone know if there are rules that you are responsible to clear your sidewalks of snow? I have a dog, who even after hours playing in the backyard, doesn't understand why we cant go on a walk. I had to walk in circles this morning and even into the street on a main road because sidewalks weren't always clear. What shocked me most is the local firehouse. They plowed all the snow out of their lot and blocked where the neighboring property had cleared the sidewalk. We have 3 sidewalks around our house cause we're on a double corner and DH cleaned them all including the ramps down to the street.

None of my neighbors clear their sidewalks. It's a quiet area, not a lot of foot traffic.

Yes, the homeowner is responsible. Mail carriers need the clear sidewalk as well. Aren't dogs supposed to be walked in the street though?

They are absolutely responsible. I think they are given a 24 hour grace period once the snow stops falling but after that, they can be fined.
My piece of sh!t landlord didn't even bother to shovel our walkway, let alone the sidewalk. I was fuming this morning!
ETA: I couldn't walk my dogs either- they were out in the yard but they didn't even want to stay out there.

I think you have 48 hrs or something like that after the snow stops. Each town has their own regulations though

Yes i thought it was mandatory to clean the sidewalks. It really annoys me when people don't!

Especially when the kids have to walk home from school or the bus and they have to walk on the street!

This is another reason DH cleaned all our walks and we went out and salted and recleared them today. We have 3 bus stops around our house. We'd feel terrible if someone fell and got hurt. Apparently not many other people care.

always homeowner responsibility, it does not matter if a street has very little traffic either. You can call you local town.

People definitely don't care in my neighborhood! My son's bus stop is on a corner and the home owner didn't shovel a thing - not even the sidewalks! The kids have to go down to the next house to stand in their driveway.

Generally, yes, you should clear them, but the actual laws vary by town--it is not written by the county.

Thanks. We live in farmingdale, so town of oyster bay. Looks like from this article at least, homeowners are responsible.
I did call the fire house and asked that they unblock the walkways. What annoyed me is the neighboring properties cleared the walk and then it got blocked by the plowed snow in the fire house lot. Still a lot of people who haven't even attempted to clear their sidewalks.
