What made you decide to leave your job?

I've been with my company for 8 years, always get glowing reviews and just had a salary discusson and it is left open ended, wil not find out for a couple of weeks the outcome. I'm burnt out. Dh said to start putting out my feelers and update my resume. I hold all the benefits.

I'm scared to make a wrong move but I'm not completely happy any longer but I do have great perks after being with the company for 8 years.

I don't know what to do. I also dont know when would be the right time to make the move. Bonus time and raises are in March. Busy season is Apr to July.

Any advice?

Well, only you can truly make that determination but consider this: update your resume, put your best foot forward, look around, apply online, if you get called to interview then do so in your spare time so it doesn't interfere with your current job. And see what happens. Remember, you can ALWAYS turn a job down. But, maybe you'll be offered something that appeals so much to you for one reason or another that it'll be worth that risk of possibly making a mistake. Sometimes we are pushed in directions that we ought to have found for ourselves. Best of luck!

I agree to start looking as it is really hard to find anything as there are a lot of competition. Stay at the job while you are looking and if something better comes up, you will be ready to leave.
Good luck :)

I would look. I always look. Even when I'm happy. My father gave me the best advice early on " it doesn't cost anything to talk". I have never turned down an interview. You really never know what put there until you put yourself out there. If there is a good opportunity then you worry about all the questions you just asked.

Thanks. I would NEVER leave unless I had something else. Did that once in my 20's and it took me forever to find something else.

This is exactly what my dh does. He constantly has his resume update and is pretty active with sending out his resume. If the salary and perks are good enough and it sounds like he could grow in the position then he takes it.

I left my previous position because after a year and half I realized I wouldn't been anything more than a paper pusher. I got my resume together and set up a linkedin profile and went on a few interviews. It's only been a few months but I love the atmosphere and the work experience so far.

Re: What made you decide to leave your job?

I was in the same position as you. I was at my last firm for 10 years. I moved from Queens to Brooklyn after DH and I got married. I was driving 2 hours each way from Brooklyn (I'm by the Verrazano Bridge) all the way to Garden City. I was burnt out. I asked to be transferred to their NYC office and the partners refused. When the HR manager asked me what would make me not quit, I said transfer me to NYC. She said anything but that.

So I quit. I got another job for a smaller firm in NYC for a little less pay but don't regret it for one minute.

Do what is best for you and your family. If I stayed where I was, I would never have had the quality time I am having with DH and DS now.

You can look and interview without leaving - even if you get an offer, no one says you have to accept it -

it might help just to see what else is out there

Re: What made you decide to leave your job?

I was at my last firm for 8 years. I got a few promotions during that time but felt I was ready for another promotion and my career advisor really couldn't tell me why I wasn't ready. I was traveling a lot and working my tail off--I felt burnt out and defeated knowing I wasn't getting promoted. I later found out that one very senior woman was holding something against me -- though I never found out what. She did the same thing to other people but she brings in so much money, they don't care. I basically realized I might never get to the next level.

I was hesitant to leave because I loved so many of the people I worked with. I had great benefits and loved what I was doing. I just knew I could stay where I was at the same level forever but I needed to get to that next level or I wouldn't be satisfied with myself.

I've now been at my firm going on 2 years. I basically do the same type of work (a bit less interesting cases lately) but am so much happier and although I thought I had a work life balance before, it's nothing compared to what I have now. The people here value me and I know they would be sad if I left. And I was promoted in the last year. Although the work at this time isn't exactly what I want to be doing here long term, I know that I could be here for the long haul. And there aren't any senior professionals that have it out for me.

If I were in your position, I might start looking but I would probably tell any new company that I had a project due in March so couldn't start until then. I mean, why move before bonuses? Chat Icon
