Oops. It's 900 million - sorry
no one won... again.
i bet that the person who wins will be a toothless, holes-in-their clothes, older couple in wyoming. they take the annuity and die three weeks after winning without leaving a will... and their family spends years in the courts and the money is lost to attorney fees (if there is any).

Re: Oops. It's 900 million - sorry
I read somewhere that 44% of those that win big jackpots spend it all in 5 years.
I'm sure if I tried REALLY hard I could possibly spend $868 Million (that's the current cash payout), but I'm not sure how people do it! Do they just get carried away and buy crazy non-sense things!?!?
In any case, I played last Saturday's with co-workers, we won $8! Rolled that over & bought tickets for Wednesday's . . . fingers crossed

The govt will help you spend it. On that $868 million cash- they will take more than half in taxes
My parents had friends who won lotto years ago. The jackpot they won was $40 million They walked away with $10.8 million after all was said and done!

yeah, i can imagine that uncle sam takes a HUGE chunk out of the winnings.
i think that a lot of people feel that the money will never end... because they've never seen that kind of money. so, they think they can help everyone and anyone who asks for help, then there will be those who approach them with "investment opportunities," and then there will be all the things they wished they could do back when they were "poor."
you'd be surprised how quickly money can be spent when you're helping your third cousin twice removed to save their home that's in foreclosure.
sadly, this is why the first thing i would do if i won would be to change my phone number.

That's what I was thinking, too! Spread the wealth a little. It'd be even nicer if it was MY office pool, but hey, I'd rather see a bunch of NYers win than someone out of state.

Also, the published sum is the annuity ammount, spread out over 20 years. The payout sum is always much less, usually around 60 percent or so. Then the gov't takes a third of that amount, so it seems like you've "lost" half, but it's because the cash option isn't the published amount.
I'm sure I could figure out how to spend a few hundred mil without going bankrupt. After I win the 1.4 billion, I'll prove it....
