WWYD -Commuting annoyances

I take the express bus to work. Two days a week my boyfriend takes my DS to school so I can go to work earlier.

I get on at the third stop, often I am the first person on the bus. I like to sit in the front because I get nauseous as it is about an hour trip. Quite a few times a woman gets on at the same stop as me and literally SITS on me in the next seat.

It is driving me insane. She elbows me, moves my jacket, etc.

I would like to continue to sit where I am, should I say something?

Nope. If you are uncomfortable, you should move because she can sit wherever she likes (even though she sounds amazingly annoying). Can you move to the seat on the other side of the aisle?

Exactly this. I know it's annoying, especially since you pay an arm and a leg for the express bus, but you don't automatically get two seats. Maybe she has the same issue you have. I'd sit on the other side of the aisle.

Where do you sit if someone is in that seat already?

Wherever that is...that's where I would sit.

Or maybe take the bus that's scheduled before your usual one.

WWYD -Commuting annoyances

I commute via the express bus and I would be super annoyed as well,(I have this one lady who literally takes her damn shoes off and plops her legs up on the seat next to her, hangs her coat on the back of the seat in front of her - one day I went to sit in that seat and asked her to move her coat and she said 'oh will it bother you if its there? I said - YES, I don't want to put my head on your coat if that's okay with you" she gave me this look like I was crazy) but she has every right to sit there. Unless you pay for a second seat there is nothing you can say.

After she is all settled in I would ask her to move so you can get out and then sit somewhere else. Nothing more annoying than having to gather your things and get up on a moving bus to let someone in or out Chat Icon

I disagree. She can sit wherever she likes, but that doesn't mean she can elbow you & move your jacket. You do have to be careful, she could be nuts, but I would politely say, "excuse me, please stops elbowing me" "excuse me, please do not touch my personal belongings."

She may insist on sitting there because she too gets sick if she sits anywhere else. Maybe on the days you don't go in early, no one else sits there before her, so she is used to her space, so she may see you as the annoyance, but that isn't any excuse to be rude.

Re: WWYD -Commuting annoyances

OK so if there's two seats on that side you sit in the one closest to the window?? So, the inner seat?? Then, she gets on and PLOPS down in the seat next to you, so the aisle seat?? WHAT IF you sit in the aisle seat, leaving the window seat open... Will she say, CAN YOU MOVE OVER?? I wonder?? Try that out -- see what happens. Maybe rather than say something to you, she will just sit on the other side?

Worth a shot!

I absolutely LOATHE people who do that. I will go out of my way to sit next to them.

You got it.

I was thinking about my original post, I'm not saying that she shouldn't sit there, it's that she shouldn't be in my seat, if that makes sense

I would try sitting the aisle and see what happens. Or let her get on first and then sit on her when you get on.

I hate when people sit on me in the bus and train - so annoying!

I don't blame you for that. And trust me, I know this is not standard express bus etiquette. Usually there's enough room on these buses (especially at that time in the morning) for everyone to get their own row so I don't know WHY she'd want to plop down next to you. I'd definitely say something to her about not touching your stuff and to please not elbow you. Maybe you can stick your bag in the middle as a buffer? That's what I usually do.

ETA: I HATE being touched, too. So I get it!

I would just say nicely please stop elbowing me. I'm guessing that's her seat when you aren't there so she is trying to annoy you enough so you will move.

I don't commute like this. Never have. So, it was just a suggestion but I can see how people could take it the wrong way --- However, I have also seen people do it. Not commuting because I've never commuted this way like I said -- but on vacations and stuff. And I never get annoyed, I just move to another seat *IF* there's plenty of spots open.

I think people should only be bothered if there aren't many seats and people are bogarting the two seats, KWIM??

But if there are plenty of other seats then must we all be on top of one another??

I guess that's my thinking but I digress to someone who commutes more often.

Re: WWYD -Commuting annoyances

Express bus commuter here.
You are probable sitting in "her" seat.
Some people are very possessive of where they sit and make it uncomfortable for others.
I've got enough stories to write a book, and I married a bus driver so there are a ton more.

Sit on the aisle side, you can always spread into the aisle.
If she elbows you repeatedly, just ask her to stop hurting you. If she touches your stuff, tell her to keep her hands to herself.
The second row is good too if you get carsick, because it sits a little higher and you can still see out the front window. Use the overhead air vents too, that helps.
If all else fails, read the NY Times, and open it fully.

Yeah - after re-reading your post - she probably sits there the other three days and is passively aggressively trying to oust you from her seat.

"My" seat is the wheelchair seat because it has a lot of legroom. Before my surgery I walked with crutches, and that seat gave me enough room to get in and out of, move my legs around, and have room for my backpack and crutches. So many people would sit there just for the legroom, then quickly look away when I got on the bus. I still asked them to move their stuff so I could sit in one of the seats. I would never do what that lady does - I pay for one seat.
