For anyone in Sachem SD
In case you didn't hear. At the BOE meeting tonight they decided to close Tecumseh, Gatelot & Seqouia. Just shocked that they are closing a newer middle school that is not even paid off.

I'm glad they pulled the plug and finally did something. This is only a temporary fix and more cuts will have to happen in order for us to regain some financial stability. I dislike the idea of Seneca being a split middle school but there isn't anything we can do now. We all just have to adjust.
The talk is that they have a renter which is likely boces for Sequoya. Also mention that Gatelot could be rented to scope and become where all the upk classrooms are.

Aww, I'm so sorry for her and all the kids this will affect. On News 12 this morning they mentioned redistricting. Will some kids be sent to other school districts?

I think if you have little kids in the earlier elementary grades. it really is no big deal. For middle school (to me anyway), its a bigger deal. It is really a tough age to be switching schools. But, if they're friends are moving also, I guess that makes it slightly better.
It's more upsetting that they let it get to this point at all. I'm am in a neighboring district and have been following it for a while.

I'm in Sachem SD but my kids are not in school yet. What does it mean for Seneca to be a "split middle school"?
Pretty sure it means that not all the students will go to the same high school, they will be split between the two high schools.

I'm upset because my children's school is closing and they will be uprooted and taken away from some of their friends and the teachers, staff, and building that they have grown to love. I get it, kids are resillient they'll adjust, and they will, but right now it's still fresh and very upsetting.
The schools won't be "overcrowded" per se, as some of the schools were only at 1/2-3/4 capacity, but the classes will all be a lot larger than we were used to.

Sachem has been mismanaging their money for years now. It has finally caught up to them and they are in a serious fiscal crisis. Enrollment is declining, so the decision was made to close 2 elementary schools and 1 middle school to try and save money.
It's merely a band aid on a much bigger problem and in 2 years, they will probably have to go through this yet again.
