Re: To Hire or not?

I'd find someone else and let her go. My first job, on my third day I got kidney stones in the middle of the night. My dad rushed me to the ER. In my excruciating pain, I remembered to take my VP's business card so my dad could call me in sick. Embarrassing? Yes, but I found a way to let my employer know i was legitimately sick and not coming in for a few days.

She probably overslept. No matter how good she was on day 1, it shows irresponsibility. And, if she did oversleep, she should have been honest. Nobody throws up for hours straight such that they can't even make a 30 second call or send an email.

To Hire or not?

Yes illnesses happen but the fact that she didn't call in until 2 hours after her start time is a red flag to me. She could have taken 2 minutes to call or leave a message.

I've been super sick while I've worked here and always always have managed to call in before my start time.

I wouldn't hire her. She should have called BEFORE 9am to let you know she wasn't coming. Even if it was just 15 mins before, that's better than 2 hours later; especially since it was only her second day.

She was hired but is on probation from the way I read it.

The question should be, do I firer her before probation end or give her another chance

Hire/fire/probation/whatever you want to call it, she wouldn't be my employee.

Yes this. Sorry if that's tough but it's her SECOND DAY. Honestly, I'd have come to work sick.

Timing aside, had she done this instead, as a co-worker I would have been LIVID. I have emetophobia. Even insinuation of vomiting sends me into panic attacks. It's extremely contagious and it's doing no one any favors by her coming in.

OMG me too. If someone would have showed up to work with a stomach virus I would flip my shit. Those things are highly contagious and just the thought of getting one gives me panic attacks.

While I think it's a bad sign that she called in 2 hours late, I'd probably still give her a second chance. But there would be no third chance.

I'd be wary. Our probationary period lasts 90 days here at my office and I when I had already been here for 2 months, I was really sick- dizzy, vomiting. I still went into the office- fainted on the train- but made it up to work. They sent me home, since they were obviously able to see how sick I was.

If she came in sick with a stomach virus and infected me, I'd be LIVID

We are all adults and I insist on being treated as one at work . And i treat MY employees as adults.

Sometimes you get sick, shitt happens.

You aren't a bad employee for getting sick nor should you be expected to come in while vomiting in a bag and infecting others.

Yes, she should have called earlier. That is a given.

But if I felt I had to come to work while vomiting because my employer was that much of a stickler, I'd be looking for another job.

So much this. I do NOT want any of my coworkers coming in with a stomach virus, ever. I will gladly hold down the fort and pull double duty for a few days if it means avoiding getting sick myself!

I would not.

It's not that she was sick. Yes, sometimes that happens.

It was that she didn't call until two hours after she was due at work.

Unacceptable unless she was hit by a bus and on life support, IMO.

I agree. Getting sick is acceptable but calling in 2 hours after your scheduled shift to let your brand new boss know, is not!

Same here! Be glad she did not come in sick (if she really was).
I say give her one more chance...

I tend to agree with this. OP stated that she thinks she overslept, which leads me to believe that she didn't believe she was really sick.

Yep ITA.

And the last thing I'd want would be her going to work sick like that. I'd have hidden somewhere for fear of catching it! lol

Re: To Hire or not?

We had something like this happen not too long ago.

On his 2nd day, he didn't show up or call. His manager texted him & he made crazy excuses and eventually showed up several hours late.

He acted oddly most of the day & in combination with his lateness, the decision was made to let him go. If he had been an excellent worker, he may have been given a warning & kept on.

In your case,if she seemed apologetic, I would let her know that calling in after your start time is unacceptable.

Since she is in a probationary period, I would consider this a strike a against her, but let the probation continue.

I guess I would give her another shot but the fact that she called two hours later would really bother me.

Yes this. If I'm sick, I always call before and let my boss know I won't be in before work starts.

Without a doubt I'd give her a second chance.

I think firing her is being wayyyyyyy to harsh.

No way. Sick, fine, but there is no excuse for not calling. ESPECIALLY on your 2nd day. No way. Frankly, I think she overslept and is lying to cover.

To Hire or not?

I'd give her a second chance, but it would leave a REALLY bad taste in my mouth. Horrible first impression if you ask me.

Honestly, I agree with this. Why did she wait 2 hours to call? I would be leery about keeping her around.

Re: To Hire or not?

Depends on what the position is. In an ideal world, I would say no because calling in two hours late is not acceptable, but good help is hard to find. If it is a hard position to fill that requires a particular skill set that is hard to come by, then I would keep her and give her a second shot. When I was a manager and hiring, the resumes I received were horrible and the work ethic of so many new hires was laughable.

To Hire or not?

I do a LOT of hiring and to me this is major red flag. I've learned the hard way and maybe it has toughened me up but every time I give someone 'the benefit of the doubt' it bites me the ass. I now take emotion completely out of it. Honestly, think about it, how could she not have possibly called earlier? A responsible employee sets an alarm to wake up sick or not sick and makes a point to notify their employer in a timely manner, in advance of the issue. Had a responsible employee been sick in the night they would've make it a point to call or have someone call on their behalf...Not wait TWO hours!!! Sick or not, there is really no excuse.

I started a new job during Sandy. I will living in Astoria and the subways were not working and you had to car pool into the city. It was my first week on the job. I am sure I could've "called out" but I didn't. I woke up super early and walked my ass over the 59th street bridge, hauling my laptop the entire way and made it into that office and then walked right back home at the end of the day. That's life. You do what you have to do.

This recently happened to me on my 2nd day. Luckily my boss gave me another chance. I did call 2 hours ahead of my schedule.
