That's not right. My right to live, for my children to live, without getting gunned down in a movie theater or mall or at school trumps the right of these lunatics with histories of mental health issues and/or criminal backgrounds of their right to bear arms.

This is where I'm at. Where does my right to live come in against the right to bear arms? No one is taking that right away-- just making controls in order to get a gun.

I just don't get how anyone can say NOOOO, right to bear arms is in the Constitution, so you can't change it! Really? Where are your critical thinking skills? The Amendment is old and poorly written. Changes and restrictions need to be made.

Thank you!!!

The 2nd amendment is a total anachronism; it comes from a time immediately after we won our independence from Britain in part by arming civilians BECAUSE WE INITIALLY DID NOT HAVE OUR OWN MILITARY, which is NOT a problem anymore.

when the 2nd amendment was written, people used to squat into a pot.. we have come a long way since that! Time for change.

BBC's headline yesterday was "just another day in America" - how pathetic is that! We have become numb to gun violence.

The purpose of the 2nd amendment was to give citizens the freedom to be able to protect themselves. We are in a situation where our law enforcement simply can not fully protect us. They can and do certainly try but there is no way they can protect us from all of these radical terrorists or even somebody like an Adam Lanza. It's just not possible. We need to be able to protect ourselves when our law enforcement can not.

I had never been an advocate for owning a gun until the terrorists were running through the Boston suburb after the bombing at the marathon. Nobody knew what weaponry they had with them. It occurred to me that if those residents did not have a weapon in their home, they were sitting ducks. You have to be able to protect yourself and your family on your own. The police can not be there all the time, especially in the face of chaos. It's just not possible.

The reality is "bad guys" will always be able to procure guns. No matter what. That is a losing battle. They are not the people putting in applications. The laws which permit citizens to obtain guns legally is what needs reformation along with our mental hygiene and criminal laws. There needs to be mandatory reporting that trumps HIPPA for the mentally ill and for criminals so that these people are red flagged when making applications. While every citizen has equal rights, there needs to be a way to restrict the rights of those who have demonstrated they can not properly and safely handle their rights.

No no no.

WE have not gotten numb.

Congress is numb from hearing us say "do something".

I'm not against guns but don't own one although I am thinking SERIOUSLY about buying one now.

There is a way to help this problem. There CAN be a compromise.

But even if congress DOES come up with one (and it would have to be DEM sided because the GOP wont agree) someone will sue and pit a stay on the law anyway.

There needs to be REAL change.

I don't need to know the purpose of the 2nd Amendment-- I'm very well aware of that.

A gun for protection does not make sense logically to me. TBH, it can't be a nice feeling to live in a state of fear that you need to have a gun to protect yourself. Let's solve the gun problem by arming ourselves? Yeah, I don't see any logic in that.

Gun violence has dramatically increased. Why haven't our regulations increased? The statistics also show that in states with fewer regulations there are more deaths by guns.

Has anyone on this thread had a family member involved in a mass shooting? I have, and it was not a nice feeling to watch that on TV. He lived, but he is forever changed. It's been a little over 15 (!) years since that happened and progress has been slow. I understand that things take time, but it's too long. I'm angry and I'm f#cking sick of it.

I just wanted to add, do you know how times an armed civilian has stopped a criminal from going on a shooting rampage.. ZERO times! So everyone that keeps saying they would like to own a gun for protection, please think about your what your first reaction would be if you were out and about with your kids and heaven forbid you were caught in a situation a such. Pull out your weapon and shoot the perp, or run with your children to safety, or shield them and then perhaps aim and shoot? What if you hit an innocent bystander in the mayhem.. are you going to get trained like a sniper to aim at your target and hit them accurately? No, for the vast majority of gun owners, the answer is no.

Our country has a MAJOR drug issue, and drugs are illegal. If someone is insane enough to commit a mass murder, they are going to find a gun somewhere, their main objective is to kill, and a law is not going to stop them. There are gun dealers out there just like there are drug dealers.

I believe we need stricter laws for those applying for gun permits, but I want the right to own a gun and keep one in my home for protection. The government should not be able to take away my right to bare arms. The government is way too involved in our lives as it is.

AND just to add, what just happened in CA, they had bombs, not just guns. So, if you can't get a gun, you can always go to ISIS to learn how to make a bomb from a remote control car.

Sick world!!

Most gun control advocates aren't saying take away guns. Just make it harder to get one. I posted an article above that said- The guns used in 15 recent mass shootings, including the attack in San Bernardino, were bought legally. At least eight gunmen had criminal histories or documented mental health problems that did not prevent them from obtaining their weapons.

That's not right. My right to live, for my children to live, without getting gunned down in a movie theater or mall or at school trumps the right of these lunatics with histories of mental health issues and/or criminal backgrounds of their right to bear arms.

This, why does everyone assume those in favor of "gun control" assume we want to take your guns. We DONT. I want stricter CONTROL on guns. Yes, the mental health system needs reform but that will take AGES to fix, stricter gun laws are immediate. Will they be 100% effective, no, but what does it hurt to try? If you are a law abiding, person with a clean background but criminal and mental why do you care if they make it tougher to obtain a gun? I DO support a ban on automatic weapons, there is NO REASON anyone needs a weapon that is designed to cause mass casualties in under 3 minutes. NO REASON ANYONE needs that. This happens EVERY WEEK.....DOES NO ONE REMEMBER SANDY HOOK? How people stand by and just shoot down any effort to TRY, just to TRY is beyond me. If it fails, ok, but we are TRYING TO DO SOMETHING about it. WTF kind of lame ass weak argument is, "oh well, they are going to get guns anyway"....so you don't try?

You CANNOT look me in the eyes and tell me gun control doesn't work......look at the countries who have EFFECTIVELY controlled guns. Their gun violence in next to NONE. And don't start citing Chicago, or cities with gun laws.....the policies arent effective. The enforcement isn't effective.....

I still don't understand just throwing your hands up though and going "I don't think it'll work" so do nothing instead.

How ANYONE is against even attempting gun CONTROL at this point, I have no idea. We are the ONLY country with this problem.

If you were one of those residents in that Boston suburb, how would you have protected yourself? If you were aware that terrorists were in your neighborhood, probably heavily armed, what would you have done? What if they were able to get into your home? I am not being facetious, I am asking you. What would you have done?

I asked myself those questions that day and I really didn't have a good answer. Obviously, call the police and then what? Wait. How? Go hide in the basement, attic or a closet? Use one of my moves from my self defense classes? Try swinging with a bat or a knife? Hit him on the head with a frying pan? Jump on his back and try to wrestle the gun out of his hand? I'm not seeing any of those scenarios ending well for me.

I don't live in a perpetual state of fear that this will happen to me. However, you need to be prepared. After Sandy, there was looting in neighborhoods. How would you have protected your home from looters? I believe that if you are a responsible person who has taken the time to properly train, use precaution and be safe with a gun (and I'm not talking about an AK47 or a machine gun), there is no reason why you should not have one in your home to protect yourself and your family. It's obviously a very controversial subject and you certainly do not have to agree with me but guns are not the problem. People are the problem.

I don't know how I would react. It's a hypothetical situation that no one would know the answer until it's actually happening. Having a gun would not change my reaction because I do not know how I would respond.

Your last sentence-- yes, it's obvious people kill people (NRA has said this many times). However, guns make it easier to kill people. Regulation is what is needed. That and critical thinking.

Those on Terror List Permitted to Purchase Guns

Ok, let's start here.

There are so many people SCREAMING about terrorists and not letting refugees in because of terrorism. Even on this website.

They tried to make it so individuals on the terror list could not purchase guns. The NRA blocked it because it's their "2nd amendment right."

Here's a starting point for change.

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon More guns is not the answer. In a horrible situation like a mass shooting you are caught by surprise. Its not like a home invasion where you can hear someone enter your home, your in your own home and know it like the back of your hand. In a mass shooting you are going to be running for your life, and there is going to be a lot of chaos. The chances of you shooting the terrorist or crazed armed lunatic are not high. Plus in a crowded place you are very likely to hit another innocent person. More guns will never solve this problem.

So, do nothing? Don't even try? (though I know in some of those cases the guns WERE legally obtained)

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Forget the mass shootings for a minute, what about all the KIDS killed by their parents' (or other family members) leally obtained guns?

Something has to be done. Please, don't misinterpret me.
I just don't know what. Every time someone proposes a bullcrap law, it wastes time, resources, money and favors.
Meanwhile, our little babies are sitting in an unarmed and helpless school and the bad guy can still get the gun. The law isn't worth the paper it's written on. Chat Icon
I don't have a solution. And I've said, many many times, someone brilliant has to come up with something because laws do nothing. California and NY have the strictest gun laws in the US, and mass shootings have happened here.

More guns aren't a solution, but neither is confiscating firearms from law abiding citizens. The bad guy is the one getting the gun illegally. Our lawmakers and media aren't focused in on the real problem:
The bad guy will ALWAYS find a way to get the gun. That's our problem. Not Mr. Anderson next door with a properly stored handgun.

When he shoots his wife in rage, it's an unfortunate incident, not a mass shooting.
When a child accidentally discharges the firearm, it's a tragedy, not a mass shooting. And these laws are trying to remedy the epidemmic of mass shootings in the US.
After Sandy Hook, NYS immediately enacted the strictest gun confiscation/penalty/sentencing in the US. The different details that make a firearm an "assault weapon" were really pared down so that virtually any rifle must now be registered, along with the ammunition, and ANY rifle with 2 or more of these qualifications is illegal.
In addition, any and all registered weapons that are considered assault weapons cannot be sold, traded or passed down to the next generation. Don't say nothing was done. Something was done right here in NYS. Chat Icon
How does that stop a guy in Brooklyn from buying an AR-15 out of the back of a van? Chat Icon

But there is simply no viable solution to getting rid of 800 million guns in the continental US. I wish I had a plan to stop mass shootings, but I don't. I do think we have to prevent people with mental health issues from obtaining firearms legally. Let's start there...

1 more thing:
the media LOVES to assume that all assault rifles are automatic.
They are not. Automatic weapons are illegal everywhere, and even the military version of the AR-15 (the M-16) will now be semi-automatic.
The Paris attacks were also committed with semi-automatic AK-47's, although the media kept saying "automatic".

Even the strictest laws are too lenient.

I didn't know that California and Chicago were magical islands with walls in which nothing can be brought in.

Take a look at nearby states and the gun laws there. States aren't bordered off.

It's a weak argument. Try again.

In addition, if I have to hear "bad guy" again I think I might just snap. I'm starting to think we can add people who oppose gun control to the "bad guy" list, NRA especially. They think they are protecting people, but more and more gun deaths are happening. Sorry, but it's pretty ignorant if anyone opposes gun control these days.

Here's what's missing from the chart: how many of the guns used in the shootings were obtained illegally. Remember, gun laws will only help if people follow the law. The bad guy never follows a law, and he will always find a way to get a gun.Chat Icon

Other countries, for example Australia, have gotten rid of guns successfully. It can be done.

Mental health is an issue that needs to be dealt with, yes. But it's also a distraction to the actual gun argument. Not all mentally ill people become mass shooters. However, all mass shooters use guns. See the connection? I can. Let's start with more gun control. That and more critical thinking.

You also mention "don't say nothing was done." Yes, something was done, but not enough was done. Take a look at gun control in other states. It's such an excuse to keep saying they will get guns no matter what. Sorry, but it's a weak argument.

Meanwhile, gun manufacturers make tons of money after a shooting, because you know, protection. It's a knee-jerk reaction with no educated thought put into it.

What's wrong with America? It's also something to do with American culture as well. Our problem is not only the bad guy. Our problem is us, and also the NRA. There was a good article about the anti-intellectualism in America. It goes along with this point.

Re: infographic of gun violence this year

To add an interesting bill for Missouri has come up. Following is a snippet of the article:

House Bill 1397 says that before Missourians could buy a gun, they’d have to:

*Meet with a licensed physician to discuss the risks of gun ownership at least 72 hours before attempting to buy a gun and obtain a written notice approval.
*Buy the gun from a licensed gun dealer located at least 120 miles from the purchaser’s legal residence.
*Review the medical risks associated with firearms, including photographs of fatal firearm injuries, and the alternatives to purchasing a firearm, including “materials about peaceful and nonviolent conflict resolution,” with the gun dealer orally and in writing.
*Watch a 30-minute video about fatal firearm injuries. (This requirement mirrors House Bill 124 from last year, which would have required women to watch a video with information about abortion they’re already required to receive from doctors orally and in writing.)
*Tour an emergency trauma center at the nearest qualified urban hospital on a weekend between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., when gun violence victims are present, and get written verification from a doctor.
Meet with at least two families who have been victims of gun violence and two local faith leaders who have officiated, within the last year, a funeral for a victim of gun violence who was under the age of 18.

I can't see how someone could be against restrictions like these. Switzerland has high gun ownership. They also have extensive gun control laws. And surprise, surprise they also have a low gun violence rate. Why can't people understand this? Why are people still saying they will find a way to get a gun? If you actually look at the evidence, restrictions work. It's just plain ignorance.

Please, everyone understand my position clearly. I think something has to be done.
I totally agree that Switzerland's policies are proactive and really effective. I think when enacting effective measures to reduce gun violence, these are some of the details that should be considered.
I also like the Missouri proposition and the way it deals with psychology to curb some otherwise law-abiding gun owners from using their firearms in a violent (non defensive) manner. I never knew about this and I learned something new today. Thank you.

I am for measures that will bring an end to the illegal gun trade and will end mass shootings, and I am in favor of effective reform.

But I am realistic. I need facts (not opinions) to accept and support a viable plan that will get guns out of the hands of violent criminals with nefarious intentions. I firmly do not believe that the current laws will not prevent this nor deal with the problems that cause the real gun violence in this country: illegally smuggled guns from other countries and gangs who obtain their handguns illegally on the streets/black market.

Please do not misinterpret my comments and facts as an opinion that I want to do nothing about the problem of gun violence in this country. I want it to stop, I don't think more guns are the answer, and I don't have a real viable plann that I think will work. However, I really feel the need to redirect the attention and focus on the human element behind the gun and how so much info on the news and on the internet is misguided and even manipulated to make us believe things that simply aren't true.

We have to be realistic. There are over 800 million guns in America right now, and there is no real plan to get rid of them. We cannot realistically expect the authorities to barge into homes and just confiscate them.

No one is saying to take away people's guns and I am so sick and tired of hearing that anyone that wants gun reform wants to take away people's guns. Keep your flucking guns just keep them responsibly. I wrote the following the last time we were discussing gun control on here. I think about this ALL THE TIME. So people do present potential solutions but it seems no one ever wants to hear them because we are just trying to "pry the gun from your cold dead hands":

It is nice to see gun owners that are able to realize that changes need to be made to our laws. I don't think anyone disagrees that mental health issues are grossly ignored and are a big problem. What I would like to see is very harsh jail penalties for gun owners that do not practice safe gun storage which results in harm to someone. The adult gun owner needs to be held responsible in situations where an unlicensed person (adult or child) gets hold of their gun and hurts or kills themselves or someone else. A child getting their hands on a loaded, unlocked gun is NOT an accident. It is a crime! I am sick of hearing that the adult has "suffered enough" when a kid gets shot. What about the kid? Likewise there needs to be mandatory life sentences for anyone convicted of a crime involving an illegal gun, whether or not harm came from that gun. And there is more that can be done and I won't ever believe that reform can't happen. People just need to accept that the status quo isn't working and accept that we have to keep trying until it makes a difference.

Also, the other day I posted about the Sandy Hook Promise and a fund raising campaign they were doing. Not one person responded. You can't expect reform and not be part of the solution. These things take time and money. Has anyone that wants reform literally put their money where there mouth is? I do. I donate because I know that from a financial perspective this is a major up hill battle against the NRA.
