Anyone fight a toll ticket?

So leaving or entering NJ - can't remember which - we were short one dollar for a $14 toll. I dont have easy pass on my car. We normally take his car, which does.

We scrambled for change, no luck. We asked the toll lady and she said not to worry, they'd just send a bill for the difference.

I got it in the mail today. $70!!! Ahhhh. I'm one of those people that feel like if you do something wrong, you should pay but this seems really unreasonable. I thought I'd get charged maybe $20 (figuring the toll plus maybe a surcharge or whatever).

Any advice? Has anyone had luck getting it down?

Re: Anyone fight a toll ticket?

I had a toll charge from a car rental recently. It wasn't a ticket but a charge for using the EZPass, which I did not use. It was $1 toll and the charge was $16 plus the $1. I called and complained and got the $16 taken off. They would not take off the $1 if I didn't have a receipt. It was $1, so I wasn't going to argue, but who collects receipts at toll booths!?

Yes, I know, but I'm talking just basic travel.

Without a receipt, I don't think you can do anything. I would've just bought an EZ Pass on the spot. They sell them at the toll booths now I thought?

I once got a $20 violation in the mail for a $1 toll in Maryland (didn't have ez pass & accidentally went on a part of the highway where they scan for it somewhere.. there was no toll both). So I returned it with a check for the $1 toll amount & I never received anything else.

I would call first but maybe just sending the original toll amt will be ok?

I would write a letter and include a check for $1. They might just accept it if it's your first violation and because you mad the effort just like they do with parking tickets, etc. the worst that will happen is they bill you again. Doesn't hurt to try.

Re: Anyone fight a toll ticket?

$70??? That's insane. I thought they just charge normal price if it's like a first offense. I recently went over a bridge without any money at all and I got charged the regular toll amount. That was in NY though, maybe Jersey is different.

I once got a violation in the mail and suspension letter for exceeding the speed limit at the toll and I called and wrote a letter saying ibdont realize the speed limit and since it was my first offense they dropped it. Def call/ write to them!

Touché.

I totally dropped the ball on this. It's my fault for sure, no denying that.

We never take my car when going out state and weren't thinking. An expensive lesson I won't be making again!
